Big News For The Post And Peachtree City!

On 23 February 2026, VFW Post 9949 was informed by the Wreaths Across America‘s Region 2 office that Post 9949 was designated the official Sponsorship Group for the Westminster Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Peachtree City, GA.

Above Left to Right- Comrades Spurgeon Glenn, Sr. Vice Cdr Rick Ford, Chaplain Jay Flournoy & Life Member Arnie Geiger help to locate Veterans graves.

This is big news for the Post and Peachtree City. Now for the first time, Veterans buried in the Westminster Memorial Gardens cemetery will have wreaths placed at their site over the Christmas/New Years holidays. The date/time for the placement of wreaths is the morning of 19 December 2026. ALL OF THE PUBLIC IS INVITED TO HELP WITH THE PLACEMENTS. The first on the many steps required to make this program a success is locating all the Veterans in the cemetery. It started with an exhaustive internet search by Post Chairman Comrade Cleary followed by onsite reconnaissance on 4 March 2026.

Above VFW Post 9949 Auxiliary member Andrea Donila (left) and Dee Lohr were part of the recon team.

It was a challenge for the team to examine for military indications on each grave at this expansive Memorial Garden.

VFW 9949 Post members above review their findings in searching for Veterans.

The work is just beginning. The enormous challenges of funding, logistics and ceremony planning lay ahead. Chairman Jack Cleary 267-693-9395, john.cleary17@gmail.com will not turn down anyone wanting to help. Volunteering is open to everyone who would like to see EVERY Veteran’s grave covered with a beautiful wreath for the holidays. Come join us in having a fun-time making this project a success.

Comrades (left to right) Spurgeon, Jay and Arnie above, prove that volunteering can be a fun time too.

Wreaths above were placed at the start of the Liberation Of Kuwait commemoration

ON 28 February 2016, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post marked the 35th anniversary of the Liberation of Kuwait. Post, Auxiliary members and guests congregated at the Post to participate in this memorable tribute.

This tribute is one of 22 VFW directed events commemorating outstanding “Action dates” in U.S. history. We hope you can attend the next two Action Days “Start of the Kosovo Campaign-1999” on March 24th & the National Vietnam War Veterans Day on March 29th. Please check the Post calendar above for more details.

Post Pavers Strike Gold!…I mean marble

25 February 2026, As part of the Veterans Brick Memorial program (click on the tab in the menu above for more details) a brick resupply run is routinely required. This 100+ mile trip loading/unloading 250 marble bricks just doesn’t happen without teamwork and dedication. Our G.I. Joe Bowler’s Paver team this time was lead by Comrade Stony Lohr. Stony drove his truck (along with Post Auxiliary member and wife Dee, who was cheering him on) made the journey to pickup and deliver the heavy brick load back to Peachtree City. Waiting for them was more Paver team members: Comrades Jim Droskinis and Jay Flournoy. The trio unloaded, stacked and secured the marble bricks for ease of use.

Above: Life Members (left to right) Jay Flournoy, Jim Droskinis and Stony Lohr work behind the scenes in making the Veterans Memorial Brick program a success for the Peachtree City community.

These bricks will someday be installed with Veteran’s names and placed at the foot of the Veterans’ monument near the City Hall and Library, under the main flag poles. Great work team, from ordering, transporting, engraving to installing,…the work of G.I. Joe’s Pavers do for all of us is truly amazing and certainly appreciated. Life Member Joe Bowler is the lead for this ongoing signature VFW Post 9949 effort. The next installation of bricks at the monument will take place in May. If you would like to order a brick for your Veteran then click on the Veterans Brick Memorial tab from the menu above.

25 February 2026 will be remembered as a day of awards at two Peachtree City area schools.

Above: Students at The Foundry Academy watch as fellow students and teachers receive awards from the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

First, at The Foundry Academy five students and two teachers were given awards. In the Voice of Democracy competition Sydney Stewart won 3rd place at Post level and Kit Kasinger received 2nd place at the District level.

Chaplain Jay Flournoy hands out a Voice of Democracy certificate and money.

Following that it was time for three Patriots Pens winners from The Foundry Academy: 1st place Law Chambers, 3rd place was Lilianna Jenkins and finishing 2nd place at the VFW Warm Springs VFW Post was Hatty Kasinger.

Rising Starr Middle School produces a winner too. Teacher, student and Parent make for a winning team.

Also winning in the Patriots’ Pen program was Rising Starr Middle School’s scholar Charlotte Dyer who received a check and certificate for securing 2nd place.

Post Life Members Joe Bowler (left) and Bill Werling explain the importance and purpose behind of the Patriot’s Pen program.

Finally, it was time to recognize the winning teachers for 2026. Both came from The Foundry Academy. For High School level it is Molly Kasinger and the middle school teacher of the year is Erin Nase. Congrats to both of these education stars of our community.

Above Dr. Molly Kasinger and below Erin Nase are the our Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949’s Teachers Of The Year award winners.

A special Post salute goes out to all the teachers and principals/leaders of these two fine schools.

Leaders like: The Headmaster of The Foundry Academy, Christi McCully, establish the leadership framework and incentive to make these parotic programs happen for their schools.
Post members that took part in the award presentation include Life Members: (left to right) Joe Bowler, Bill Werling, Jay Flournoy & Gary Rossomme.

Of course, it is also the leads of these programs: Patriot’s Pen Joe Bowler & Bill Werling, Voice of Democracy & Teachers Award, Jay Flournoy, that makes it all possible. Their hours of work and dedication are unmatched. Well done, Comrades. Lets hope we get more students and teachers to participate next year.

Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy talks about origin of the Voice of Democracy program and encourages high school students to take part in next year’s competition. He tells them it’s a fun, worthwhile effort that can earn them a $1,000 first place prize at the local Post level and even more nationally.

VFW and Auxiliary members from Peachtree City and Fayetteville Posts joined together for a photograph at the recent Department of GA VFW Mid-Winter Conference.

Post Takes 1st Place Again & Members Gained Training At State Conference

The state of Georgia’s VFW and Auxiliary members arrived on 20 February in Macon GA for the Mid-Winter conference. It was three days of ceremonies, training, shopping, prayers, speeches, dinner, awards and tons of comradeship. The Post was well represented and once again took to the winner’s stage.

Above Post Quartermaster Jim Droskinis was part of the VFW Post 9949 team.

Above: National Jr. Vice Commander Glenn Umberger, Post Commander Ben Bauman, Benefits Advisor Stony Lohr and Department of Georgia Commander Bill Miles award the first place to Peachtree City Post 9949.

It was a good and large conference with lots of new and old friends sharing in the pro-Veteran experience.

Above: a portion of the crowd that attended the conference in Macon.

The Post team will now share the information and their training they received with other Post members when they return. Not only are these events informative but it is fun being part of this event and worth attending. We hope more Combat Warriors and Auxiliary members from our Post will attend the upcoming conferences and conventions.

Wow! What A Hugh Meeting

Comrades approve of the work done by many fellow members.

To a packed house on Thursday 12 February, 40-some VFW Post 9949 Combat-proven Veterans plus members of the Post Axillary gathered for a special and educational evening. First came a wonderful Auxiliary crafted meat loaf dinner with fixings. Then it was time to pay a tribute to the men who lost their lives at the 15 February 1898 “Sinking of the U.S.S. Maine.”

New Life Member Comrade Marius “Cleveland” Gravely (center above) leads the Post in a salute after placing a memorial wreath for the U.S.S. Maine.

The sinking of the U.S.S. Maine was the catalyst for the start of the Spanish-American War. Combat Veterans of that war became the founders of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 1899. Members saw two short videos, were led in prayers by the Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy, heard remarks given by Post Sr. Vice Cmdr Rick Ford and finally saluted during the playing of “Taps” as part of the tribute. The Post members then received a very informative briefing by the Atlanta Honor Flight team.

The Atlanta Honor Flight team, lead by President Tony Wilson (in red above), briefed Post members.

All ears were intently listening to every detail of this truly outstanding program, a program that flies Veterans on a day trip to Washington D.C. to be honored, chauffeured to military monuments throughout the Nation’s Capital and back home again.

Tony Wilson above answers questions and passes out applications to Post members for future upcoming Honor Flights.

As the Honor Flight team members explained, there is NO COST for Veterans that go on these trips (including the flight and food that is provided). It’s all made possible by donations (corporation and individual). For more information on applying for future flights and how one can donate to the program go to www.HonorFlightAtlanta.org or call 404-316-6359. The Post would like to render a big salute to Life Member Comrade Tom Holak for putting this program together over several months. Tom, who is a new VFW Legacy member, has been on an Honor Flight and his work will directly lead other Post members to receive this well earned experience. Then it was on the formal and all important business of the Post. The Post received another streamer for the our Post flag. It’s now adorned with the 2026 All American designation. The success of this Post is due to it’s members. This includes one of our members who was recognized as the top VFW Quartermaster in the state, Life Member Comrade Jim O’Neil. Congats Jim, and TANKS for all that you do for Veterans.

Above: Comrade Jim O’Neal receives the top Quartermaster in the State award.

It’s going to hard to top this meeting. Please come to the next Post membership meeting on 12 March -dinner at 17:30hrs (5:30pm)- and see if we do top it.

Attention Mimi Fans!

We have been informed that Mimi’s Good Food restaurant on 303 Kelly Drive, PTC- a well known VFW dinning hangout- tentatively will be closed for maintenance/vacation 2 -6 February. It’s going to be difficult to survive,… especially on Wednesday morning 4 February (On Wednesday mornings, several Post Comrades religiously meet for breakfast around 07:00hrs/7 AM). The Post Chaplain will be available for counseling if needed. The good news is that Mimi’s will be back open the weekend, Saturday 7 February.

Tribute & Movie

25 January 2026, despite the threat of freezing rain and bad road conditions didn’t stop Veterans gathering to pay tribute and commemorate the signing of the Vietnam Peace Accord in 1973. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 hosted this event that included: placing of a wreath, prayers, remarks, playing of “taps” and showing of a movie…and pizza.

Post Commander Ben Bauman opens the ceremony

This special ceremony is the first of the year of the 22 VFW directed “outstanding action dates” in U.S. history that VFW Post should commemorate. Part of this event includes the placing of a wreath in honor of those to sacrificed for this day.

Above and below: members salute as the wreath is placed
Life Member Comrade Arnie Geiger joins in the salute to our fallen Vietnam Veterans

A prayer was read after the wreath laying. The overall project lead for this tribute was Life and Charter Member of VFW Post 9949 Gary Rossomme. Comrade Rossomme provided poignant and heart felt remarks as part of the ceremony.

The playing of “Taps” concluded the formal aspect of this “Signing of the Vietnam Peace Accord- 1973” tribute.

Above: Charter and Life Member Stony Lohr conducted the playing of “Taps” at the end of the service.

Next, the audience was treated to showing of the movie: “Last Full Measure” some pizza and beverages.

Above: some of the audience that attended the event. This included Veterans and guests from several Posts.
Several members of the VFW Post 9949 Auxiliary shown above (President Christel Ford-left and Life Member Liz Geiger) were also in attendance.

Comrade Rossomme gave a detailed briefing of the movie that helped everyone understand the equipment and tactics that were in the movie.

Above Comrade Rossomme provided details, facts and personal accounts regarding the movie plus the many personal aspects resulting from that war.

The members applauded the many folks that organized this event. This included the technical production that made the movie happen by our Post Adjutant Mark Gelhardt. Also the arranging of the pizza by Post Commander Bauman and Auxiliary Vice President Tracy Bauman. Of course a special salute goes to the Lead for this event Comrade Gary Rossomme.

Thank you Comrade Rossomme for making this tribute happen.

We look forward to our next VFW Action Day: “Sinking of the U.S.S. Maine”- 1898. The commemoration will be held at the beginning of the February 12 Post general membership meeting. Social hour begins at 17:30hrs/ 5:30PM.

Post Picks It Up

On 24 January 2026, Comrades lead by their Commander Ben Bauman braved the cold and help remove hundreds of wreaths that covered the graves of Veterans in Fayetteville Georgia. As part of the Wreaths Across America project, wreaths decorated the grave sites of Veterans placed at the start of the holiday season.

Above: the team of Post members (l-R Arnie Geiger, Jay Flournoy, Mark Gelhardt, Jack Cleary, Ben Bauman) shown behind their work of removing holiday wreaths.

All the bending, picking and loading multiple trailers with the holiday wreaths from graves sites in the cold is another function the Post members do to remember our departed Comrades. In a true Combat warrior spirit this was all accomplished with dedication, joy and honor.

Even working in the cold won’t stop these Veterans in having fun in what they do.

The Post sends a big salute to all who came out that day to help and special salute to the local Wreaths Across America team- lead by Geralyn Daniel for making these projects happen for all our deceased Veterans each year.

Above shows part of our Post 9949 Combat Warriors who completed the pickup task in record time. – Well done Comrades!

Above Veterans gathered from all over the state at the capital

21 January 2026 was a cold but clear day at the state capital in Atlanta, GA. It was clear enough and we were loud enough to let members of the state legislature hear Veterans voicing their opposition to House Bill 108 and Senate Bill 73.

Above VFW Post 98949 Life Member Spirgeong Glenn holds one of the many signs in opposition to the bad for Veterans HB108 & SB 73 bills

The above bills will allow non-accredited agents to collect off Veterans’ VA disability awarded funds. That is just one of the many issues with this legislation.

Putting Veterans before profits needs to be a priority for our state.
Above and below: Even in the cold, letting our voices heard was important and fun too.

The Department of GA VFW, in conjunction with the “GA Veterans on the Hill Alliance” encourages all members to contact their state senate and house representatives to ask them to “Kill the Bill!” and protective our Veterans.

The importance of this event was reflected in the senior leaders from all the major Veterans organizations in Georgia rallying to speak at the podium.

Above: VFW Auxiliary Past Dept President, Belinda Baragona, and Post 9949 Auxiliary President, Christel Ford, made their voices heard too.

Special salute to all who made the trip to the capitol, especially our drivers: Wayne Leicher (event lead), Ben Bauman, Wayne Nelson and Spirgeong Glenn. We couldn’t have gotten there without you. So if you haven’t done so, please contact your representatives and let them hear your voice in support of Veterans.

For all the military personnel that have, are and will “stand the wall” for our nation, it’s our time now to remind or elected officials to stand for Veterans today. –Call them today.

Life Member Ben Gross shown above being interviewed on local TV.

VFW Post 9949’s Celebrity Ben Gross

From television stations in Bismarck, North Dakota and Atlanta and local newspaper in Fayetteville, Georgia has made our Comrade Ben Gross a “star” celebrity that we are proud of.

Being in the Hollywood spotlight started back back in 1952 with letters sent from Korea.
Above letters sent from Korea, some Post marked just recently!

Comrade Ben Gross sent several letters to his brother back in Bismarck, North Dakota while serving in the Army in Korea. Recently his brother sent these letters he had kept back to Ben in Peachtree City via U.S. Mail and that is where the story of these lost letters and all his TV and newspaper fame took off.

Above: Post Commander Ben Bauman wishes everyone a Merry Christmas and thank you for a super 2025

Message From The Commander

To all our Members, Veterans, Families, and Friends,

As we gather to celebrate the season, let us take a moment to reflect on the incredible spirit of Christmas that transcends even the harshest circumstances. This time of year, reminds me of the Christmas Truce of 1914, when soldiers from both sides of World War I laid down their arms, emerged from the trenches, and shared a moment of peace amidst the chaos of war. It was a powerful testament to humanity that binds us all, even in the darkest of times.

For those who have served, Christmas and the Holiday Season holds a special meaning. Whether we were deployed far from home, celebrating in makeshift barracks, or sharing a simple meal with our brothers and sisters in arms, the holiday often brings both joy and longing. We remember the calls home, the care packages sent with love, and the unique camaraderie that grows stronger during the holidays.

Above: Fellow VFW Comrades and Auxiliary from all over the state wish everyone a Merry Christmas

This year, as we gather with loved ones or honor traditions in our own way, let us remember those who are still serving, those we have lost, and those who are unable to be with their families.

From all of us at VFW Post 9949 and Auxiliary Unit 9949, may your Christmas be filled with peace, joy, and gratitude for the blessings we share. And may we all carry the spirit of Christmas—hope, love, and goodwill—into the new year.

 Merry Christmas and God bless!

 Ben

 Ben Bauman

Commander, Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 9949

Commander District 10, Department of Georgia

Above Commander Bauman can’t stop singing Christmas carols and praises for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 Comrades and its Auxiliary members.

Together, let’s make 2026 another record-breaking year of success for VFW post 9949 and Auxiliary.

Post Delivers Christmas Cheer & Baskets To Veterans

Once again this year the biggest expense for the Veterans of Foreign wars Post 9949 was the purchasing of beautiful Christmas fruit baskets that were given to needy Veterans throughout the Peachtree City area. The only thing bigger than the two trucks full of fruit baskets was the smile received from each grateful Veteran.

Above Comrade Wayne & Mr. USMC Ed Coach “Rambo” get ready to deliver baskets to Vets.

895 times this year VFW post 9949 visited Veterans in the Peachtree City area as part of our “VFW Veterans Visits” V3 program. The Christmas basket deliveries at the end of year is the culmination of the program.

Post Life Member Tom Holak led off the December meeting giving a brief on the Honor Flight program.

Honor Flight & Initiation Record

The 11 December 2025, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 general membership meeting started with Louisiana style meals scrumptiously prepared by the Post’s Auxiliary members. Red beans & rice, plus jambalaya all seasoned with Louisiana hot sauce, hot apple cider beverage and other side dishes got the crowd warmed up for the meeting. Then it was time for a stellar and informative presentation by Comrade Tom Holak on the Honor Flight program.

Above Tom briefed the purpose of Honor Flight and his personal experience on a Honor Flight to Washington D.C.

The Honor Flight is a great program for Veterans. Post members are anxiously hoping to hear more about how they can support it in upcoming general membership meetings.
Then came time for the official business meeting. While routine important business was accomplished, the Quarterly Initiation Ceremony set a new record. The Post initiated into the Post 10 members! Commander Ben hands were taxed from pinning the Cross of Malta decoration on all these members.

Above & pictured below are ten members that were initiated into the Post.

The ten members receiving the Cross of Malta as part of the Initiation ceremony are Comrades: Chad Clayton, Joe Backus, Ramadan Randolph, Tom Holak, Jules Desgain, Harry Baro, Luis Aguilar, Hal Gabby, Lou Verde and Spurgeon Glenn III.

For more pictures of the individual initiated go to the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” tab in the menu above.

A Fire With Honor

When our nation’s flags are no longer servable, there is a proper way (a formal ritual) for their retirement. Led by American Legion GA Post 50, Veterans of VFW Post 9949 and citizens gathered to witness and participate in this honorable event on 8 December 2025.

Veterans gathered to hear A.L. GA Post 50 Commander John Barson (above far right) lead the flag retirement ceremony

This event is an important service provided to the Peachtree City, Tyrone & Senoia, GA communities as hundreds of flags are properly retired.

It takes a lot of effort to make this all happen respectfully with dignity and honor … and the team did just that.

Above is shown part of the team, led by Arnie Geiger with support of Ken Benson, shown above, that setup the physical work for this event

After all the flags were retired the crowd was treated to a fabulous pot luck dinner orchestrated by Liz Geiger. It was super yummy and a perfect way to end the event.

December 7th 2025, found Peachtree City patriots gathered to remember what took place on December 7th 1941.

It was a moving yet dignified tribute as several in attendance recalled the day that Pearl Harbor was attacked.

Following the formal program those gathered were treated to a detailed briefing by Post Life Member Dr. John House on what actually took place on the day in history.

Above and below: members listened and participated in the discussion/presentation given by Dr. House.
Dr. John House provided tremendous insight to the happenings that day in Hawaii.

At the end of the presentation the audience enjoyed lunch. However before that, the Post paid tribute to John. We thanked him for all his working supporting the Post and its mission of aiding needy Veterans and their families. The Post Commander and Post Auxiliary President gave Comrade House a “house warming” plant as he is in the process of moving to Columbus, GA.

Above (left to right) Cmdr Ben Bauman, Comrade John House and Aux President Christel Ford presented thank you gift.

Punching Holes With The Old Stuff

21 November, members of both the VFW and Post Auxiliary took over all the ranges at Autrey’s Armory, 116 Bethea Road, Fayetteville, GA. This range visit the focus was on shooting old WWI & WWII rifles. It was great to share this opportunity with fellow Veterans with Vietnam, Pershing Gulf and Korean experiences. We showed off our Army, Air Force and Marine Corps shooting skills. The group started out with a Japanese Arisaka Type 99 rifle built in 1939. The chrome barrel piece of history had a nice “kick” and impressive boom after each round was launched. Then it was time for the 1903 Springfield, built in 1918. Yep, we fired a rifle over 100 years old!….and we all survived 🙂

Shooting these old rifles, including one 104 years old, will put a smile on everyone, including Vietnam Cavalry Veteran and Post charter member above Gary Rossomme.

Above Auxiliary member Andrea Donila takes a break from shooting on the handgun range

After the “03” we picked up the M1 Garand, built in August of 1941. Yep, a pre-WWII M1 Garand rifle. Post Life Member and Marine Veteran Tim Tice was blasting “holes-in-holes” in the 10 ring with that very heavy piece of furniture of a rifle. With shoulders smarting, we moved to a 1943 built M1 Carbine. That rifle felt like a toy but was “right-on target” with each trigger pull. Members of the Auxiliary also like shooting the Carbine. Speaking of which they too brought their toys that they shot….very well. We all finished shooting at the range with a variety of handguns. Stay tuned for the next “Post at the range” event…. Now that we put away the furniture rifles maybe we’ll be shooting those AR plastic things….after all, our shoulders need to heal.

Post & Auxiliary place wreaths as part of Veterans Day commemoration.

Post Commander Speaks On Veterans Day

On Veterans Day 2025, Veterans & citizens gathered on a very cold morning to pay tribute to Veterans. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 participation in this Peachtree City sponsored event was limited to remarks given by the Post Commander Ben Bauman.

Above: Post Commander Ben Bauman (right) was one of the speakers at the City Veterans Day event.

Commander Bauman spoke and gave historical facts on the origination of the Veterans Day holiday.

Commander Bauman addresses the audience regarding Veterans Day.

One of the most important achievements, and work the VFW did was to secure legislation honoring all American Veterans. With the help of the VFW’s endorsement, in 1953 Congress passed a bill stipulating that November 11th henceforth be celebrated as Veteran’s Day.

VFW Post 9949 Chaplain Jay Flournoy was one of the several Post members in attendance.

8 November 2025, found Post members (including our new Auxiliary members) at five different locations in the Peachtree City, GA area distributing Buddy Poppies. Our Post Buddy Poppies Commander -in- Chief (CINC) Julian Velasquez once again mapped a successful program the Saturday before Veterans Day.

Comrade Bowler (left) Aux Member Holly Bowler and Comrade Tom Holak are ready to greet shoppers at the Kroger Braelinn store.

Distributing Buddy Poppies and educating the public of its history is an extremely important event that this Post conducts twice a year. All the funds that are donated by very our generous citizens go strictly to support Veterans assistant programs.

Finally, the Post leadership has to recognize and give appreciation to ALL the many Post Comrades and Auxiliary members who worked that Saturday to support the many needy Veterans and their families that the collected funds will go to support.

Life Members Wayne Leicher (left) and Ben Gross talk to a donor to the Buddy Poppy fund.

We Have Patriot Pen Winners!

Above: part of larger group of Post 9949 VFW and Auxiliary members that judged essays.

On 6 November, with about a hundred essays to judge from middle schools all around the Peachtree City area it could be long a challenging task to complete. However, thanks to a larger group of Post Comrades and Auxiliary members it was accomplished in record time!

Comrade Bowler above gives instructions to judges.

The monumental task of judging all these essays were handled professionally thanks to the superb organization, instructions and work by Comrade Bowler. The 2025-2026 Patriots Pen theme was: “How are you showing patriotism and support for our country?”

Auxiliary members Liz Geiger (left) and Holly Bowler help make the judging both productive and a fun time.

It was hard work to decide but the winners’ essays this year were awesome! If everyone could read all these essays, one would be proud of our youth who will soon be the upcoming leaders of our nation.

Above picture shows part of the serious work of judging essays.

After the all the judging the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners are:

1st Place: Law G. Chambers 6th grade, The Foundry Academy

2nd Place: Charlotte Dyer 7th grade, Rising Starr

3rd Place: Lilianna C. Jenkins 6th grade, The Foundry Academy

Post Adjutant Mark Gelhardt crunched the numbers to come up with the winners.

Great work to everyone that made this program a success. A special Post salute goes out to Comrades Joe Bowler and Bill Werling who are the project leads for this program.

At the October VFW Post 9949 General Membership meeting, Comrades and their families were treated to a Post cookout, plus games like horseshoes and cornhole and birthday celebration for the U.S. Navy’s 250th birthday.

Above combat warriors like Life Members Shannon Claburn (left) & Gary Rossomme were deadly actuate in pitching shoes.

Thanks mostly to the hard work of Comrade Claburn, citizens of Peachtree City can now throw horseshoes on the VFW Post 9949 sponsored refurbished horseshoe pit. Located between and behind the Gathering Place and the Fredrick Brown Amphitheatre box office in the Shakerag Hill park complex.

Life Member Comrade Mark Weaver, a proud Navy Veteran Combat Sailor, cuts a cake as part of the 250th U.S. Navy’s birthday commemoration.

The laughs, jokes and good humor was all around the Post members as they sang songs like Anchors Away…all 10+ verses.

Comrade Mark leads the Post in singing the Navy song.

This Cookout meeting, with all the activities, we were still able to conduct the important business of the Post. It’s the focus of the Post to take care of Veterans and their families…and we do this while still having fun.

Staying focused on our mission while still enjoying our comradeship is the key to the success of VFW Post 9949

Post 5080 Morrow Gets A New Post Home

The city of Morrow loves their combat Veterans and built a new Post home for Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5080. This $ million + facility will serve VFW members handsomely for many, many years at no cost.

Post Commander Wayne Collins gives remarks before the ribbon cutting of his new Post home.
Many dignitaries were present for the ribbon cutting ceremony. This includes our own Post and 10th District Commander Ben Bauman
The new gifted Post home included a new large flag pole. Post 5080 members are shown above raising the US flag over the Post for the first time.
Many members of our VFW Post 9949 were in attendance and joined the crowd above going into the new Post building.
Well done and congratulations Comrades of Post 5080. We are sure your community will enjoy the bingo and all the other services that you will provide to the wonderful town of Morrow.

Post’s Pavers Strike… Marble?

Led by Comrade Joe Bowler, once again VFW Post members installed marble bricks inscribed with Veterans names at the foot of Peachtree City’s Veterans monument. Just in time for upcoming Veterans Day these bricks are magnificent and greatly enhance the site of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 donate monument. It is located near the city library.

VFW Post 9949 installs the Veteran bricks at the monument.

It takes lots of preparation, planning and setup to maintain this site. However, Comrade Bowler once again leads the way to making it all work.

Comrades Gary Rossomme (left) and Post Adjutant John House review the plan for the bricks installation.

Finally, it time to breakout the tools and get to the ground floor work of installing the breaks. It’s not particular fancy work but its a task the Post Pavers love to do.

Above Comrade Rossomme gets into the ‘ground level’ of brick installing.

Once the newly installed bricks are set, a small U.S. flag marks the spot. This way the new Veterans bricks can be found easily.

Above is a picture of two newly installed Veteran bricks.

The Peachtree City Library keeps a binder which has a location map for all the Veteran bricks. This easy to use map makes it a snap to find the brick that family members are searching for. Supporting the families of Veterans is at the Corps of Post 9949’s mission: Supporting Veterans and their families.

Post Recalls The Beirut Bombing Of 1983

On a gorgeous 23 October 2025 morning in Peachtree City, Georgia, Comrades gathered at the City’s Veterans monument. The occasion was the marking of 42 years from the day of the terrible bombing of U.S. military personnel in Beirut, Lebanon.

Above: some of the Post members who attended this commemoration.

As with other Post’s sponsored tributes and events, it starts with saluting our Nation’s flag while reciting the Pledge of Allegiance.

Above (left to right) Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy, Life Member Gary Rossomme, Post Adjutant John House and Life Member Tim Tice are preparing to salute.

Next, comes prayers by our Post Chaplain and the laying of the ceremonial wreath at the base of the Veteran’s monument.

Playing of the song “Taps” by Post Benefits Advisory Stony Lohr (above right) adds to the importance of this occasion.

Remarks of the background and facts of the bombing were given by Post Adjutant & Historian Dr. John House and Post U.S. Marine Corps Veteran Tim Tice. Their words brought back to life the terrible happenings and circumstances of that day 42 years ago.

Comrade Tice details the facts regarding the loss of 307 lives including 299 military personnel
VFW Post 9949 Comrades enjoyed a breakfast at Mimi’s Good Food before the ceremony.

As with most of the these Post sponsored events in the mornings, we like to start off with breakfast at Mimi’s Good Food, 303 Kelly Drive in Peachtree City. Don’t forget to ask for your Veterans’ discount at the register when you go.

SEP Meeting Full OF Cake, Cybersecurity & New Members

At the Post General Membership meeting on 10 September, the membership began the meeting celebrating 78 years since the founding of the USAF. Everyone was in fine tune as we sang “off to the wide blue yonder…” Next came a VERY detailed and well received briefing on cybersecurity by Comrade Life Member Stuart Smith.

Above Stu educates the members on cybersecurity.

Comrade Stu Smith (who does cybersecurity fulltime professionally) gave such a tremendous briefing that he has been asked to repeat this briefing at the VFW GA Department Mid-Winter Conference in February.

Above: the audience listens intently to the briefing.

The Post also welcomed new members aboard as they went thru the VFW initiation ceremony.

Pictured above (left to right) Steve Cole, Veronica Carter and Hal Hardy take the member obligation oath. Below members receive the Cross of Malta insignia.
It was a productive meeting that, along with the good food, made it a super night.

Members of Post 9949 and it’s Auxiliary conducted a Patriots Day ceremony with the Veterans and Staff at the Somerby Senior Living Center Peachtree City, GA.

Veterans Live For Patriots Day Tribute

11 September, 2025 – Peachtree City, GA. Veterans, Auxiliary members, family members, guests and residents from faraway Toledo, Ohio to close-by Newnan GA. all came to the Somerby Sr. Lvn Ctr in Peachtree City to commemorate Patriots Day. The packed filled large room audience was treated to a program of the laying of wreaths, reciting the pledge of allegiance, playing of “taps”and remarks given by a on-sight survivor of the 9-11 attack on the Pentagon.- VFW Post 9949 Life Member and Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy.

Above: Chaplain Flournoy recounts the horrific events that took place 24 years ago as he was working in the Pentagon.

Everyone in attendance that heard Jay’s words were emotionally touched in their hearts recalling that dark day on 11 September 2001. It was a tremendously remarkable presentation deliver by the Chaplain that put all us on the receiving end of what occurred that day at several locations in America. Yet the message is clear that patriotic citizens, lead by Veterans, have not lost faith to our great nation. We stand today as patriotic as ever in our dedicated service to America, our Veterans and their families.

Above is a portion of the Veterans that came and help celebrate Patriots Day

POWs/MIAs Remembered

On 19 September 2025, Veterans, family members and guests gathered in Peachtree City, GA to remember our nation’s Prisoners Of War and Missing In Action who are still unaccounted for.

This joint Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion commemoration highlighted the importance of keeping in the forefront of everyone’s mind the mission of returning all our POWs/MIAs back home.

This is the 17th of the 22 “VFW Actions Days” that the Combat Warriors of Post 9949 has supported this year.

Above is a partial group photograph of the patriots who participated in the POW/MIA ceremony.

Finally, we salute the joint team that made this event wonderful and meaningful. From heart felt remarks given by both Commanders, to the prayers, wreath laying and playing of taps, it was really special and appropriate. Please join us for our next “VFW Action Day” on 7 October…start of “Operation Enduring Freedom” – Afghanistan- 2001.

We’ll have a spot for you too at any of our upcoming commemorations/tributes
Chaplain Jay Flournoy shows that he is a “STRAIGHT shooter”…most of the time. 🙂

Home On The Range

Several Post members travelled to Autrey’s Armory range to show off their marksmanship skills. Then we went off to lunch…of course. This is an example of one of the many fun activities our Post sponsors for our Veterans.

Post Benefits Adviser Stony Lohr, displays what he thinks of dictators on paper targets.

Be on the lookout for our next range event. This time we will feature long-gun marksmanship on M1 Garand, M1 Carbine, M1A1, 1903 Springfield and more. Old school rifles with modern VFW Post 9949 Comrades. That’s a perfect mix for fun-times for our members. Oh and don’t forget we go out for lunch after the shoot. Everyone is welcome…invite a friend. And if you haven’t heard, some of our Auxiliary members are good shots too.

Tel the world that our VFW Post 9949 is serving some wonderful Class I (that’s food… also known as Army chow), throwing horseshoes, listening to live music, and more at our next General Membership meeting 9 October 2025. Starting with games at 16:00hrs (that’s 4 PM). Hope you can bring yourself and your troops (all are welcome) to the Post. It would be OUTSTANDING if you could bring a side dish to share …as you share in some great comradeship with fellow Veterans, their families and friends.

Post Life Member Walter Donila, Jr. 29 August 1942-29 August 2025

In Memory Of Comrade Donila

Walter was a very active member of VFW Post 9949 and the large turnout of Veterans showed his importance to the Post and it’s mission of serving others.

Above is a long line of Veterans showing respect to Walter and for the service he provided to his fellow Comrades.

Walter’s deep-seated patriotism, love of history and a continual dedication to the sense of duty for his nation’s Veterans will be greatly missed by all.

VFW National Convention AUG 9-12 2025

Post Goes National

The hot summer days in Columbus Ohio got even hotter when thousands of VFW combat Veterans along with their VFW Auxiliary came to town. Proudly among the units attending was our Post 9949 and for the first time our brand new VFW 9949 Auxiliary.

Above are the members from Peachtree City that attended the convention (back-row left to right) Life member Mark Gelhardt, Sr. along with his wife Karen, Commander Ben Bauman and wife Aux Sr. Vice President Tracy, Sr. Vice Commander Rick Ford and wife Aux President Christel.

Now only did our Post come to town to support the National Convention but we came to collect some hardware…like big time national VFW and Auxiliary awards.

Above VFW National Commander in Chief Al Lippardt presents Post Commander Ben Bauman one of several awards he received.

Besides receiving awards at the Post level, Commander Bauman received District award as the 10th District Commander.

Above: The 10th District Commander takes home some more hardware.

Our Auxiliary was also not left out. Our new VFW Post 9949 Auxiliary also got on the big stage as Post Auxiliary President Christel Ford received her award from the National Auxiliary President Brenda Bryant.

Besides awards, the important business of the convention in directing how going forward the U.S. Veterans of Foreign Wars operates worldwide took place.

Above: Post Comrade Mark Gelhardt listens carefully to the proposed resolutions before casting his delegate vote.

It was a packed convention with over 9,000 attending.

Tons of work went into making this convention happen with all of it’s displays and attractions. Including the many, many hours in creating beautiful exhibitions of art using Buddy Poppies.

Above: some of the amazing art displays using Buddy Poppies.

Of course the evenings were full of fun times and entertainment. This included a patriotic parade and rally.

The highlight for the festivities was the formal banquet. It was a tux and beautiful evening dresses for our team.

Driver Comrade Jim Droskinis drove the Post 9949 car super fast all the way to the finish …even with a broken right front shock!

VFW Race Day At Senoia Raceway

Hot steamy weather couldn’t stop Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 members coming out and supporting the VFW Post 9949 racecar driven by its owner, Quarter Master Jim Droskinis.

The VFW 9949 car above was in the hunt tracking down the leaders before his right front shock broke.

Mechanical broken parts are part of the sport of motor racing. But on 27 July, things like a broken transponder, right front shock and ruined tire wouldn’t stop the VFW Post 9949 car from qualifying and finishing 15 high speed laps, while flying around the dirt track on Saturday night.

Above a few of the VFW Post 9949 racecar fans in attendance.

As advertised, it was hot and the race came with lots of noise. However, a nice breeze was blowing and that provided some relief…until it blew dirt & dust from the track into the grandstand. All part of the adventure of Southern dirt track racing.

It was great to have the Department of GA VFW Commander Bill Miles come to help cheer on our Quarter Master Jim Droskinis as he raced.

Not only does the our racecar showoff that we are an exciting Post but also gives us a chance to meet and recruit combat Veterans to be new members.

Above Post Resource Advisor Stony Lohr sits near Pershing Gulf Veteran John (orange visor), who we are currently recruiting.

This hot Southern fun event was full sharing comradeships with fellow Veterans and their families.

Above Life Member Shannon Claburn and wife Denise were part of the 9949’s racecar cheering section.

We hope you can come out the next time there is a VFW race night at the Senoia Raceway. Reasonable prices: $15 for adults, kids free, hotdogs for $3 and unlimited free comradeship with good times.

The “Ruck Up For PTSD/TBI” is the State Commander’s Project of particular importance. Information on donating to this project go to www.georgiavfw.org website.

Finally it was really an honor to have the Department Commander come out and join us for this race. Thanks Sir and let’s RUCK UP FOR PTSD/TBI!

VFW Post 9949’s Auxiliary members gathered at the Coweta Veterans Club to say thanks to VFW Post 2667 Auxiliary. (L to R: Donna L, Christel F, Misha B, Tracy B and Gail C)

THANK YOU Post 2667 Auxiliary

Over a 3+ year period many members have worked hard to make the VFW Post 9949 get established. Along that journey many Auxiliary members of VFW Post 2667 were there to provide guidance and encouragement. To thank them for their support (which continues today) members of our Post traveled to the Coweta County Veterans Club on 23 July, 2025. There the Peachtree City VFW Auxiliary presented the Newnan Auxiliary with a “Thank You” cake. It was a super fun time as everyone stayed for wonderful dinners, beverages, playing trivial pursuit and pool.

Above: Post Commander Ben Bauman (left) along with Life Member Wayne Leicher were part of the Thank You party crowd from Post 9949.

It was really cool and jazzy to see our members answering tough trivia questions (team “Diva” & team “Bushwackers” represented our Post) and knocking pool balls into pockets.

Above: Life Member Ken Benson was once again the KING of the pool table.

All the folks on the Veterans Club were super nice and welcoming.

Above are a few of the dozen plus Post members that shared in the fun.

Again, we truly appreciate the help and long term friendship given by the Newnan VFW Post 2667 Auxiliary to our VFW Post 9949 Auxiliary. “Partner In Service!”

Visiting Veterans & Spouses Brings On The Smiles

Above: Post Auxiliary Present Christel Ford gives Mary Carter flowers and a handmade dreamsicle greeting card. Mary’s husband was a VFW member for 40 years!

Yep, the VFW Post 9949’s VFW Veterans Visits (V3) team was at it again. Once more, Post members trooped out to five local residential facilities to meet with elderly Veterans. Members were joined by other Veterans and volunteers. At the same time at two facilities, the Post Auxiliary was visiting spouses and widows of Veterans.

America Legion member John Matias (left) joins up with VFW Post 9949 Chaplain Jay Flournoy in visiting Veterans.

The temperatures tend to be pretty hot outside but relaxing and visiting Veterans in their beautiful air conditioned facilities makes it an enjoyable time for everyone.

Life Member Arnie Geiger is shown above visiting Navy Veteran Marilu

We hope to see everyone on August 21st for our next V3. The Veterans we see are VERY appreciative of the time we spend with them.

Above the V3 meets at Somerby Senior Living Center every 3rd Thursday each month.

Not only did the Post go to five local facilities but also visited elderly Vets in their residences.

Before the July General Membership meeting began, Geralyn Daniel from Wreathes Across America explained their organization’s mission.

Hot Weather And Really Cool Topics In July’s Meeting

The hot temperatures drove folks inside to find air-conditioning at the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 July’s general membership meeting. No-one complained because inside was a fried chicken dinner with all the fixings. The tasty chicken was provided by the Wreaths Across America (WAA) team and the sides by the Post’s Auxiliary members. The very generous WAA team also gave out thank you checks to several organizations (including Post 9949) that provided help in placing wreaths on Veteran’s grave sites during the Christmas season.

Above, the Wreaths Across America presented checks to several supporting organizations

It was a treat to hear a detailed presentation on WAA’s purpose and nationwide footprint in making their mission successful in remembering our deceased Veterans.
Above Geralyn Daniel explains the inner workings and organization structure of Wreaths Across America.

Post members have not only supported WAA for years by purchasing wreaths but also in the placement and retrieval after the holiday season. Also that night, more checks were handed out. This time the Post Commander was doing the handing out. The recipient was our “Scout of the Year” Brian Hobmann.

Above Brian Hobmann (Life Member Dallas Wrust right & Commander Ben Bauman left) shows off his VFW 9949 Scout of the Year plaque. He also received two checks for his Eagle project work.

Brian Hobmann work in revamping a Children’s Services waiting room, including painting, new furniture and collecting many books for it’s library not only impressed our Post members but earned him runner-up title in the State of Georgia. That designation also came with a handsome check.
Post’s Scout of the Year Brian Hobmann explains his Eagle project to the Post membership.

Then it was time for the official business of the Post to begin. Some members may not realize there are significant required “prep” work needed before each monthly meeting can take place. From multiple phones calls, text messages, emails, Staff Call meeting and actual setup of the Post meeting room.
Above: Life Members Thomas Rivera (left) and Julian Velasquez are some members (plus Auxiliary members) who come in early to set the Post up for the monthly meeting.
Our Post Chaplain, Life Member Jay Flournoy starts the meeting with a prayer.

Sadly, this month we conducted a draping of the Post Charter ceremony in remembrance of the passing of two of our Life Members: John C. Flournoy and James (Recon) Ryan.

With dignity and honor Junior Vice Commander Ken Benson helps in the draping of the Post Charter for the loss of two Post members.

For next 30 days the Post Charter will remain draped. In other Post routine business matters, the Post Commander Ben Bauman proudly announced that our VFW 9949 finished 9th in VFW Post world-wide and will be recognized at the upcoming VFW National Convention in August.

Above: Post Members listen to the business of the Post. Our Post members vote and make the final decisions regarding Post matters.

It was wonderful to see a good crowd at our meeting.

Above: Life members Mark Weaver (left) and Jim Fogg share some hearty comradeship during the meeting.

Please invite your fellow Comrades to the next meeting on August 14th. We’ll be having a cookout. We’ll have horseshoes games, live music via local artist Jack Flournoy, great food off our grill TANKS to Chef Ken Benson. Please bring a side to share. The food will start serving at 17:30hrs, horseshoes pitching around 16:00hrs. Please bring the family and enjoy some Comradeship.

A big salute to everyone that gave a special tribute and remembrance to those who sacrificed everything that makes the 4th of July holiday season possible

Post ZOOMS in the 4th of July Parade

Above is a picture of the VFW Post 9949 race car (owned and driven by Life Member Jim Droskinis) that was a star of the Peachtree City 4th of July parade.

The first and oldest Veterans organization of Peachtree City -Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949- once again marched in the City’s 4th of July parade.

Above: Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy decorates his golf cart in preparation for the parade.

Besides Post members walking and riding in golf carts while handing out U.S. flags, this year we had two firsts. This year we proudly were joined by our new VFW Auxiliary. Open to all citizens directly related to a combat Veteran, the men and women of the Auxiliary exemplify their motto: Unwavering support for uncommon heroes.

Making history this year, the VFW Post 9949 Auxiliary was part of the 4th of July parade.

Then in another first, the Post’s 9949 race car was part of this year’s specular cavalcade…and wow was it a star! It looked like it was going 100mph even while being strapped down to a trailer. It brought a lot of attention, even from the local media.

Above local news journalist Caroline Pope interviews owner & driver Post Quartermaster Jim Dorskinis
To get a complete and accurate news story it’s important to have a hands-on perspective. Above: Caroline is checking out the driver’s station

Of course once again it takes a whole Post of members to make an event a wonderful success. From banner carriers, race car truck transporter, numerous safety walkers, flag distributors and golf cart drivers their work was amazing.

Above are part of the VFW Post & Auxiliary 4th of July paraded team

Besides the fun of being in a parade and seeing all the friendly people it was a great camaraderie experience for our Post members.
Above some of the Post Comrades enjoying the food and cold drinks provided by the Post Commander. TANKS Ben!

It was a real good time. We hope more Post & Auxiliary members will walk or ride in next year’s parade.
Above: Life Member and MP Larry Rosenthal made sure to keep all the Post Comrades in line. 😉

Big appreciation and salute has to go to our Commander Ben Bauman for putting the whole package together. A lot of coordination and behind the scenes work is required for these types of events.
Above in the white “VFW” shirt: Post 9949 Commander Ben Bauman gives a safety briefing before the start of the parade.

The end of the parade didn’t end it for the Post 9949 race car. The next day Driver Jim qualified for the 6th slot and then goes on to finish 4th in a technically shortened race due to previous accidents. If it would had been a full race the 9949 car would have been pushing for the first place checked flag.

Not only does it look fast but it goes really fast too. The 9949 car finished 4th at the Senoia Raceway on Saturday 6 July.

It was a super-great 249th birthday for American on the 4th and lots of fun for our VFW Post 9949 members. We can’t wait to see what the 250th birthday for our nation will bring.

Happy birthday America!

Above Rising Star Middle School’s McClendon was the Post’s first place winner.

Patriots Pen is open to 6th, 7th & 8th grade students enrolled by 31 October.

Post 2d place winner Lydia also wrote a super-great essay.

In a special finish, the Post awarded two 3rd place winners: Mahillia & Gavin.

While many schools participated, the top 3 Post level winners came from Rising Star Middle School and at the higher District level came from Crossroads Christian Middle School. Of course this program relies on the support of wonderful teachers and patriotic supporting schools.

Above Ms Moore, one of the many wonderful teachers that supported the Patriots Pen essay contest, reads. Christabella’s District level award winning essay.

The Post salutes everyone that participated and made this contest so successful. Next fall students can look forward to another Patriot Pen essay contest which will offer even bigger scholarship award money.

Recalling Actions In Somalia

31 March 2025, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 arranged a special ceremony commemorating the end of our Nation’s combat actions in Somalia. Too few Americans today recall the terrible conditions, battles and near impossible missions our Veterans faced in support of “Operation Restore Hope” which took place in Somalia ending in 1995.

Above: Somalia Combat Veteran and VFW Post 9949 Commander led the commemoration.

Our Commander Ben Bauman provided a detailed history of the US military forces actions in multiple missions in Somalia. Commander Bauman led a group of combat engineers in a dangerous challenge of clearing mines from roads and building combat fortifications.

Above: a portion of the fellow Veterans who gathered listened, learned and supported the Comrades who served in Somalia

Post members rendered proper prayers, remarks and salutes as part of this Operation Restore Hope tribute.

A proper “slow-salute” was given by Post members above.

While commemorating the sixth of the outstanding action dates in US military history, in accordance with the VFW national guidelines, it was not all despondent. These events bring Veterans closer together, raise our spirits and always produce a lot of laughs.

Getting together with other comrades, always makes these Veterans events a wonderful time.

National Vietnam War Veterans Day Came With Ceremony, Presentation & Comradeship

On 29 March our country paid tribute to our beloved Vietnam heroes by commemorating National Vietnam War Veterans Day. In Peachtree City our VFW Post 9949’s Chaplain and Life Member Jay Flournoy led this tribute.

Comrade Flournoy is shown above addressing the onlookers taking part in the commemoration.

Prayers, remarks and playing of “Taps” were part of the outside ceremony that included laying a wreath at the foot of the Veterans Monument.

Above: featured guest speaker, author and Vietnam Veteran Ed Sherwood is shown placing the wreath at the Veterans monument

This is the 5th (out of 22) VFW commemorations of outstanding action dates in U.S. history. A major feature of all these commemorations is the opportunity to share fellowship with fellow Comrades, friends and guests.

Above and below Comrades and friends meet.

It was great to see and welcome all the Vietnam Veterans that came to the event

Above are a few of the Vietnam Veterans that we so honor
Above Life Member Ben Gross, an Army Korean War veteran, took time to pay tribute on this day.

Author Ed Sherwood left is shown with VFW Post 9949 Commander Ben Bauman holding a copy of Ed’s book.
A packed crowd listens to Ed’s very moving and powerful presentation.

Once the presentation was complete and the THANK YOUS given, it was time for more comradeship! This time over lunch at (of course) Mimi’s Good Food, 303 Kelly Drive in Peachtree City.

The Post sends out a big salute to Ed Sherwood for his wonderful and important words. Thanks to Comrade Jay Flournoy for leading this event and most importantly we salute all the Vietnam Veterans on this National Vietnam Veterans Day across America. Welcome home hero’s!

26 Years Later- Kosovo Campaign Remembered

On 24 March 2025 members of the VFW Post 9949 and Auxiliary joined other Veterans and their families at the home of Kosovo Veteran and VFW Post 9948 Life Member Julian Velasquez. Uniting with Julian for this commemoration was another Kosovo Veteran, and Life Member of the Post as well, Christian Mayer.

Above left Comrade Julian Velasquez assisted by Comrade Christian Mayer place a wreath at the start of the commemoration of the Start of Kosovo Campaign.

In this busy world, it becomes easy to forgot the far-away places where our nations Veterans served in combat war zones. However, we should not forget the sacrifices the men and women gave freely to our nation when called upon. It is good to hear from those who were there and help us remember those events 26 years ago.

Above US Army Veteran Christian recalls the terrible destruction and loss of life throughout the Kosovo Bosnia region and a danger of hidden minds everywhere.

Julian, an Army Medical Service Corps Officer worked as a medical planner for Kosovo. He recalled how the US was able to share medical equipment to help support the local population.
Julian explains how important the medical mission became and how happy the local community was to receive assistance.

This commemoration is the 4th of 22 tributes the VFW observes throughout the year. These “outstanding action dates in U.S. history” begin in January with the “Signing of the Vietnam Peace Accord in 1973” and ends 7 December on “Pearl Harbor Day -1941.”

Placement of the memorial wreath marks the start of these VFW commemorative tributes.

After an opening payer by the Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy, placing of a wreath, remarks by Veterans and guests, then come the solemn playing of “taps.”

Above: Life Member Stony Lohr played “Taps” at the end of the tribute to the Kosovo Veterans.

We hope that all Veterans and guests can join us at our next VFW commemorative tribute on 29 March at 11:00hrs at the Peachtree City Veterans Center, 201 McIntosh Trail, Peachtree City. We will be commemorating the National Vietnam War Veterans Day. Please click on the 29 March day in the calendar above for more details about this event.

We salute all those who have gone before us. The VFW, we honor the dead by serving the living.

Attention World, We Have An Auxiliary!

22 March 2025, After 31 years from the start of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949, the Post now proudly proclaims the institution of VFW Post 9949 Auxiliary. This big historical moment was made even bigger with the presiding official being the Veterans of Foreign Wars Commander-In-Chief himself- Al Lipphardt.

Above: The world leader of the U.S. Veterans of Foreign Wars, Commander-In-Chief Al Lipphardt is shown with gavel in hand presiding over the ceremony.

The VFW Commander-in-Chief was joined by many other “VIPs” who were present for this historic event including Department of GA and District VFW & Auxiliary leaders and their staff plus Peachtree City councilman Clint Holland.

Department of GA VFW AUX President Belinda Baragona addresses the audience.

Before the formal event took place it was time for breakfast at Mimi’s Good Food, 303 Kelly Drive, GA (who was also a generous sponsor of the ceremony) and a fun-time golf cart rides around Lake Peachtree.

It was a true honor for Post 9949 to have the Department of Georgia VFW Auxiliary President Belinda Baragona be in the lead golf cart for our procession around Lake Peachtree.

This included stopping by the Veterans Monument, which was established by VFW Post 9949 in 1998 and quick stop at the farmers market.

Visitors toured lake Peachtree, the Veterans Monument near City Hall, the Saturday Farmers Market, and finally ended up at the spillway for a photo opportunity shown above.

After the golf cart tour cruising at 10 miles an hour, it was time to get down to business and the Institution of the new auxiliary. What may seem a like an easy task was really a lot of hard work (going back several years) from an outstanding team from all over Georgia.

Above two (one soon to be) Presidents review the plan to make the Institution ceremony go smoothly…and it went great!
Above Susan Simmons and the GA AUX team below (left to right) Christina Mathis, Katie Stanley & Cara Jackson are a few of the outstanding team that made Post 9949’s Auxiliary become a reality.
Above: Department of GA VFW Commander Joe Couch (left) and his Chief of Staff Wayne Collins came to help celebrate the establishment of the new auxiliary

The ceremony included new Post officers being escorted by the Dept Auxiliary’s Conductor to take their oath of Office.

The new Senior Vice President Tracy Bauman center in blue above is being escorted to take her office.
Melissa Johnson being escorted by Department Auxiliary Conductor Christina Mathis.

Finally, with the business complete it was time for the transfer of authority to the new Post Auxiliary President Christel Ford

Above President Ford receives the gavel from Commander-in-Chief Lipphardt.

With the Post’s Auxiliary becoming official it was time to cut the cake and conclude with a lunch created by our resident chef Life Member Ken Benson.

Life Member Jim Droskinis got the perfect Auxiliary cake

It has taken years by Post members to bring life to the new Post Auxiliary. Many, many “thank yous” to everyone who supported this historic cause. The Auxiliary will make Post 9949 stronger and be in the position to better help Veterans their families and our community. If any men or women are related to a combat Veteran and would like to join the new auxiliary please contact Aux President Ford at 770-356-2829.

Present Ford waves a THANK YOU to everyone that made this day happen.

Post Is Racing Fast!

On 21 March 2025, at Senoia Raceway in Senoia, Georgia, race fans saw Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949’s Life Member Jim Droskinis’ car was sporting a new logo on the side: “VFW Ask Me How To Join.”

The VFW tag above it’s prominently displayed on this fast looking race car.

Jim, a self-described “car guy” has a love for racing in dirt and making the left turns and lots of noise. But Jim will be first to tell you it can’t all be done by yourself just like a successful VFW Post. It takes teamwork to get across the finish line.

The Car 71 pit crew (from left to right) consisted of Post 9949 Auxiliary member Alana Bauman and Post Commander Ben Bauman

Jim was making the dirt fly that night. It was good to see fellow Post members cheering him on…they even did “the wave” a few times.

One can’t miss car 71 with its big American flag on the hood.

As in things that matter, its the hard work that’s one put into the projects like Patriot’s Pen, Voice of Democracy and all the other activities that Post 9949 does (by 100% volunteers) that makes the difference.

Driver Jim is making final adjustments to his car to go screaming fast on the dirt oval.

Our Post too is racing fast. As of today the Post is second in the world in recruitment of all VFW Posts in its size category. Proudly recording a 117% recruiting lap speed so far and we are gaining speed.

The high bank turns might be steep and the traffic heavy but no one‘s gonna catch car 71 and VFW Post 9949.

If you are a combat Veteran or are related to one, please contact us about getting the ride of your life in helping Veterans, their families and community. We have a great time doing fun events like this one.

Inside his helmet, Jim is all smiles as he about to take to the track in his American Flag racer.

Come join us for the National Vietnam Memorial Day, Saturday, 29 March at the Peachtree City Veterans Center (the Post’s location: 201 McIntosh Trail, Peachtree City, GA) starting at 11:00hrs. Commemorate this day by paying tribute to all that served in Vietnam and hear author Ed Sherwood speak on this topic. For more pictures from the Senioa Raceway and Jim’s VFW supporting car click on the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” tab above.

Honor Guard Stands Ready To Serve…Again.

15 March 2025, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 Honor Guard was called upon once again for their service. This time it was to assists with rendering military honors for a recently deceased Veteran, a US Navy Captain Tise Eyler.

The Post Honor Guard along with members of the Civil Air Patrol ‘teamed up’ in providing military honors that included a color-guard, U.S. flag folding and presentation and the playing of “taps

This very open and upfront to the audience leaves no room for error and needs to respectfully be executed to exquisite perfection.

Proper preparation is the key for a successful execution of military honors. Above the team gathers for final instruction.

A strong commitment, positive attitude plus fellow comradeship are key elements required for successful Honor Guard supported missions.

Wonderful comradeship and a strong commitment is essential to be a member of the Post Honor Guard team.

If interested in joining the combat Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 and its Honor Guard team contact us via the “Contact Us” tab listed above this page.

New Comrade James Delaney (above holding a hat) along with 5 other Comrades are sworn in as new members of VFW Post 9949.

Post Grows At Cookout

13 March 2025, Burgers, hotdogs and grilled chicken served up by MasterChef Ken Benson along with donated delicious side dishes made for a great start to the March’s general membership meeting. Not only did the Comrades’ waist lines grow, but the Post also grew in the number of members. That night six members took the membership oath and received their Cross of Malta official government award. Below are a few pictures of some members receiving their Cross of Malta.

Comrade Grant Sutherland receives his Cross of Malta from post Commander Ben Bauman
Army Veteran Renford Ligon joins the ranks of VFW Post 9949- HOOAH!
Comrade Andrew Touchton earned his VFW membership via his service in Afghanistan
Another proud Army Combat Vet Steve Allen assists the Post to grow its ranks with strong new Comrades.
Army Pershing Gulf War Veteran Stuart Smith gets “pinned” by the Commander welcoming him and all the new Comrades ‘aboard’ to Post 9949

After the food, a terrific pre-amble presentation by Jim Droskinis on his service in Panama & the Initiation ceremony were over, it was time for normal Post business. With so many topics to cover, it was a lengthy night of work, ensuring Veterans families and our community are well served by this Post. Please check the calendar above for upcoming events … you can see there’s a lot of them! We hope to see everyone at the Sonia Raceway on the 21st and at the installation ceremony for our new Post Auxiliary on the 22nd. Again, click on the calendar above for details.

The 2025 VOD Winners Are…

What exciting times and good news. Not only did the Post select three terrific Voice of Democracy (VOD) winners but ALL THREE won first, second and third place at the VFW GA 10th District level too! The competition for the Post’s top $1,000 prize brought in 43 terrific student submissions.

Above: The Post’s 1st place winner, Ai from St. Marys Academy, receives checks, certificates and medal from Comrades Flournoy and Rivera.
Above: Sydney from The Foundry school receives her checks, certificates and medal for the Post’s 2nd place finish. Below, Colin, the Post’s 3rd place winner from Sandy Creek High School along with Principal Ms Oliver, shows off his checks, certificate and medal

What is the VFW’s Voice of Democracy program? Created in 1947, VOD audio-essay program provides high school students with unique opportunity to express themselves in regard to a democratic and patriotic theme in a recorded essay. Each year nearly 40,000 students from 9th to 12th grade across the United States enter to win their share of $2.1 million in educational scholarships awards through this program. This year the three winners from our VFW Post shared in a total of over $2,000 in scholarship money. Please let your high schooler(s) know to be on the lookout for next year’s VFW VOD scholarship competition.

Above: students at the Foundry School are excited and interested hearing about the VOD program.

It takes serious energy on the part of several Post members, especially the program lead, Chaplain Jay Flournoy, in making this competition a success. A big salute to all that help fund and participated in this year’s VOD.

Above in VFW hats from left to right are the 3 VOD Judges: Arnie Geiger, Jay Flournoy and Rick Ford. Plus, Comrade Tom Rivera is also pictured.

Congratulations again to Ai, Sydney and Colin. VOD winners at both the Post and District levels.

VFW Post 9949 Commemorates the Liberation of Kuwait

Thirty-four years ago on 28 February 1991, US and coalition forces liberated Kuwait. This marked the end of Operation Desert Storm. Peachtree City’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 members paid tribute on this day 2025 at the Veterans F-16 jet monument at Falcon Field airport, Peachtree City, GA.

The F-16 Jet monument was a perfect background to the Liberation of Kuwait tribute ceremony

Life member and Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy lead the event that included: prayers, placing of a wreath, historical background information and a key address speaker.

Chaplain Jay (above left) recalls to audience the key facts of the Persian Gulf war
Historian Ph.D. John House, a Life Member of our VFW Post, gave an outstanding accounting of leading his Field Artillery unit during Operation Desert Storm

The sunny weather was perfect for this event. The sounds of airplanes and jets taking off the nearby runway brought the sands of the Persian Gulf seemingly closer that morning.

The commemoration recalled with prayer, the sacrifices given by the military personnel 34 years ago.
Above: Post Senior Vice Commander and Life Member Rick Ford places a wreath at the base of the F-16 monument. Below: Comrade House shared the tactics used to advance and attack targets with artillery while operating in a desert environment.
Above is a portion of the Veterans gathered to take part the day’s commemorative tribute.

This was the 3d of the VFW’s 22 “outstanding action dates in U.S. history.” We hope you can come join us for: March 24 – Start of the Kosovo Campaign 1999; on March 29 – National Vietnam War Veterans Day; and on 31 March – End of Operation Restore Hope-Somalia 1995. To see details for all these events (when they are available) by clicking on the event posted in the above calendar. You’ll find these tributes fun and informative while sharing comradeship with fellow Veterans and guests.

Above: Soon to be – our Post Auxiliary bringing Mardi Gras smiles to Veterans’ spouses and widows

February’s V3 brings fun times and Mardi Gras Smiles

The 20th of February 2025 is the heart of Mardi Gras season and the Auxiliary team was celebrating. The Auxiliary made Mardi Gras masks they handed out plus beads to all the Veteran spouses and widows they visited. It was a real fun treat that once again made the third Thursday of each month something to look forward to. Of course members of the Post’s VFW Veterans Visits (V3) team had a ‘hoot’ of a time too.

VFW Post Life Member Wayne Fowler is one of the V3 members that had a good time visiting Veterans.

For the 14 volunteers that participated that day bringing joy to Veterans and spouses it turned out to be a fun time for them as well.

The V3 visits have proven to be fun for everyone.

This program is open to all volunteers. No experience required. Just bring a big smile and wear some patriotic attire and you’ll have fun too.

Our next fun time visit will be 20th of March at 1PM. We meet at Somerby Sr. Lvn Ctr, 300 Rockaway Road, in Peachtree City. Teams then break out to 5 senior facilities. The Auxiliary meets at the same time but at the Legacy Ridge facility, 1967 W. Lanier Avenue, in Peachtree City. Come join us and get ready for some smiles.

Midwinter Conference Brings Great News For Our Post!

14 February 2025 saw members of VFW Post 9949 descend on the Macon City Conference Center to attend the Veterans of Foreign Wars Department of Georgia Midwinter conference. It was on the second day, Saturday the 22d, all conference attendees heard a VFW National proclamation read by the Department of GA VFW Auxiliary leadership establishing the Peachtree City Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 Auxiliary. Post 9949 attendees were asked to stand as conference participants cheered and applauded upon hearing this great news. The Post charter is draped for 30 days in memory of the passing of Past Post Commander Bud Ellis

Remembering Bud Ellis & The U.S.S. Maine, Plus Cookies, Some Of The February Post’s Highlights

The start of the 13 February general membership meeting began with a tribute ceremony of the Sinking of the U.S.S. Maine in 1898. Not only was this the precursor to the start of the Spanish – American War it also led to the formation of the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization.

Life Member Ed Ramirez stands next to the “Sinking of the Maine 1898”wreath.

As part of the ceremony that included prayers and the playing of “Taps” members were shown a VFW history video that illustrated the importance of the Spanish – America War to the founding of the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization.

All Post members rose and saluted during the playing of taps

Members then took part in the “Draping of the Charter” ceremony in tribute and mourning the loss of our VFW Post’s 2nd Post Commander Bud Ellis. The Charter of the Post (please see the picture above), of which Bud was a “Charter Member” and has his name inscribed on it, will remain covered for a 30 day period.

Post Chaplain and Life Member Jay Flournoy above led both the Celebration of Life service for Bud Ellis’ funeral and the prayers in the Post’s Draping of the Charter Ceremony

Also, at the meeting the Post was visited by a local Girl Scout troop and gave us the opportunity to buy some Girl Scouts cookies. There were lots of sales of YUM that night. Later, Post Quarter Master Jim O’Neil introduced an easy way to donate to the Post via the Zelle QR Code. For any Zelle user just zap the QR code below and “voila’ one can easily send donation funds to our Post.

This, plus many other business items, made for a busy, yet full of laughs, night. The next meeting, 13 March, will be a cookout along with an initiation ceremony starting 17:30hrs (5:30PM). Bring the family and guests who are hungry and get ready for some Comrade Ken Benson’s grilled-to-perfection delights! Plus any side dishes you want to share.

Past Post Commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949

Past Commander Bud Ellis’ Celebration Of Life Service

On 1 February 2025, Post 9949 Comrades, Veterans, guests and family members gathered at Somerby Senior Living Center in Peachtree City pay respects and good bye to Bud Ellis at a Celebration of Life Service. This included Military Honors provided by Post members.

Post Chaplain and Honor Guard Member Jay Flournoy (upper right) orchestrated the memorial celebration of life event for Bud Ellis.

Comrade Ellis was a proud founding member of VFW Post 9949 in Peachtree City, GA back in 1994. This US Air Force Veteran was not only a VFW Life Member but was also the second Commander for the Post.

The folding of the flag that was presented to the family was done by Honor Guards and VFW Life Members Stony Lohr and Arnie Geiger.

The Military Honors that was given to Comrade Bud Ellis included a flag presentation and the playing of “Taps”.

Above: Honor Guard and Life Member Thomas Rivera played “Taps” as all Veterans saluted.

There was a large crowd on hand to say their farewell to Bud and give support to his family.

Above pictured is a portion of the overflowing crowd in attendance.

The success of Comrade Ellis’ early works as Post Commander are the foundations of the many achievements we stand on today. He will never be forgotten in our history as this Post flies to higher and higher heights in the success of helping Veterans, their families and community.

Above between the box containing Bud Ellis’ ashes and the U.S. Flag is a red Buddy Poppy. This signifies that Bud and all deceased Comrades and Veterans will be remembered with prayers each and every upcoming Memorial and Veterans Day.

Wreath placed in commemoration of the signing of the Vietnam Peace Accord 1973

Vietnam Peace Accord Remembered

On Monday 27 January 2025, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 gathered with Veterans organizations, family members and guests to commemorate the signing of the Vietnam peace accord in 1973.

Above is pictured a segment of the audience that gathered around the wreath placed at the base of the U.S. flag pole.

The placing of the wreath then a prayer delivered by Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy was followed by remarks given by the Post lead for this event, Life Member Wayne, led up to the final salute with the playing of “Taps.” The spectators then moved inside for some “hot chow” and refreshments.

A provided lunch set the audience up for a first-class presentation on Vietnam.
VFW Post 9949 Life member “Coach” Ed Ramirez and his wife took part in the program.

Thanks the detailed and super coordination by Post Comrade Wayne Leicher, himself a Vietnam Veteran, the audience was treated to a special and very interesting program.

Comrade Wayne Leicher introduces Speaker Anh Nguyen

The presenter of the day was Mr. Anh Nguyen. Mr. Nguyen was only 13 years old when his peaceful town in Vietnam was thrust into chaos as it was overrun by the North Vietnamese Army. The harrowing experience of witnessing the turmoil and devastation of war forever changed his life.

For nearly a month, his village became a battleground, marked by fierce fighting between the Vietcong and U.S. Marines. As the conflict raged on, Mr. Nguyen, like many children of his age, was forced to confront the harsh realities of violence and survival. The battle not only impacted his childhood but also shaped his understanding of resilience and the human spirit in the face of adversity.

Mr. Nguyen’s story serves as a powerful reminder of the effects of war on all participants, particularly those who fought and sacrificed their lives. But, he doesn’t leave it there.

Above VFW Post 3650 Fayetteville Post Commander Larry Dell discusses with another Vietnam Veteran their shared experiences

Today, as a resident in Fayette County, Anh is actively engaged in serving the U.S. Military and families in the search and recovery of those Missing in Action by heading up a delegation that frequently returns to Vietnam. Mr. Nguyen spoke eloquently to the packed house about his memories, and now, on the efforts being made to bring our boys ‘home’. – The above words & several photos provide by Legionnaire Bill Kemp. For those who may have information regarding Vietnam burial sites of Soldiers from all armies that were in conflict there or those who would like to contact Mr. Nguyen (a retired Coca-Cola executive) on other matters may do so via email at: anhdnguyen99@gmail.com

VFW Post 9949 Commander Ben Bauman explains that the Vietnam War has touched all of us (including family members like his father) and is important to remember and honor those who served.

To see more pictures from this 27 January 2025 – Signing of the Vietnam Peace Accord in 1973 commemorative tribute event click on the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” tab located in the menu above this page.

Above: Post Commander Bauman thanks Ahn and all who came and supported this well attended event.

VFW Post 9949 sends out a big salute to everyone who attended from all over Fayette and Coweta counties. VFW Post 3650, American Legion GA Post 105 both from Fayetteville Georgia and certainly our home town American Legion GA Post 50 and Auxiliary for sharing in this tribute. Also a big TANKS! to those who setup the Post, made the food and cleaned up afterwards. Our next commemoration- “Sinking of U.S.S. Maine 1898”, will take place in conjunction with the February Post general membership meeting.

Something Fishy At The Post January Meeting

9 January 2025 brought in some cold weather and Winter Warning alerts for the next day but also brought in a busy Post 9949 general membership meeting. The Veterans Fishing Organization (VFO) founder Ken Bearden gave a detailed briefing of how his organization helps many Veterans. The VFO’s mission is to provide military combat Veterans with an opportunity for recreation and renewal through guided fresh water fishing and wildlife observation on lakes in Georgia and bordering states.

VFO founder Ken Bearden explained to members of the Post how VFO operates and answered many questions for the audience. VFW Post 9949 Comrades are always happy to hear of organizations that are focused on helping Veterans. Post Life Member Ric Lim works with VFO and knows firsthand that they do great work with Veterans. If you would like to help support VFO’s good works then go to their website: www.vfohome.org.
Next, as the Post is getting closer and closer to standing up it’s Auxiliary, Post Commander Ben Bauman took timeout to recognize Christel Ford for her dedication & work in taking on the challenge of making VFW Post AUX 9949 a reality as well as supporting other Post activities.
Christel Ford above is being recognized for her efforts in establishing a Post Auxiliary with a certificate of appreciation and bouquet of flowers.
Pictured above is a portion of the soon-to-be “charter members” of VFW Post 9949 Auxiliary. Left to right are Anne Flournoy, Andrea Donila, Carol Rosenthal, Christel Ford and Nancy Handley.

Then normal Post business was conducted including highlighting an upcoming VFW Action Day on 27 January. The signing of the Vietnam Peace Accords in 1973. The Post will conduct a tribute at the flag pole outside of the Peachtree City Veterans Center starting at 11:00hrs. This will be followed by a lunch inside the Post that includes a presentation/lecture regarding the on-site battlefield recoveries of Soldiers’ remains in Vietnam. All of this is open to all and at no cost. We hope to see many of you there.

Above: VFW Post Commander Ben Bauman (red hat) and other Veterans prepare to dig a ceremonial hole for the planning of a “Liberty Tree” in Peachtree City’s Drake field.

Post Helps Plant Liberty Tree

On 9 January 2025 the earth shook in Peachtree City. Well … only a little as dignitaries gathered and then shoveled dirt at Drake Field in Peachtree City, GA. The reason this collection of leaders from Veterans organizations and the City gathered was to dig a hole for the planting of a special oak tree.

The first toss of dirt begins the planting of the “Liberty Tree”

Not just any tree. It was a “Liberty Tree.” Harking all the way back to the revolutionary war where the tree adorned our independence motivated flags “AN APPEAL TO HEAVEN” of our revolutionary Soldiers. The Liberty Tree became a rallying point for the resistance to the rule of Britain over the American colonies beginning in 1765.

The Peachtree City mayor Kim Learnard (above right) stressed that the oak tree was selected due to its long lifespan.

The Sons of Liberty and the Daughters of the American Revolution were instrumental in developing this project that should shade the free citizens of Peachtree City with liberty for many lifetimes ahead.

Above is a picture of the many patriotic groups plus Peachtree City officials who took part in planting the “Liberty Tree.”

Life Member Julian Velasquez presents a certificate of appreciation to the Kroger Kedron store

Post Thanks Stores

Giving needed Veterans Christmas fruit baskets, paying lodging for a homeless Veteran, building wheelchair ramps, etc… can only happen with donations from the Peachtree City area citizens. These donations are ONLY made possible with the generous support of local stores that allow VFW Post 9949 members to setup Buddy Poppy donation sites at their entrance. Post “CINC Poppy” Julian Velasquez visited each store location to show our appreciation by giving a certificate and thank you coffee mug.

Above & below Julian presented Kimber Huff, the store manager of Clothes Less Traveled, a coffee mug and certificate of appreciation

A 100% of the Buddy Poppy donations collected go to direct support of Veteran programs.

Sam’s Club is another store that supports the VFW Buddy Poppy donation campaign
Crosstown Kroger is a site that is popular to shop and donate to Veterans during Buddy Poppy drives.
Thanking wonderful stores like Walmart brings lots of smiles.

The saluting of Walmart, Clothes Less Traveled, Peachtree City Kroger stores and Sam’s Club local stores would not have been possible without the hard work of the Post member that puts the whole Buddy Poppy program together: Julian Velasquez. Well done CINC Poppy!…oh by the way CINC, Memorial Day and the next Buddy Poppy donation drive is only four months away. – wink 😉

Merry Christmas From The VFW Comrades of Post 9949!

Post Christmas Visits To Veterans & Spouses

Life Member Ben Gross delivers fruit basket to Navy Veteran Marilu

Each month members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 visit Veterans at facilities and homes throughout the Peachtree City Georgia area. The biggest visit of the year that our Comrades always look forward to is our Christmas visit.
Above: Wayne Leicher, Ken Benson, John Macias, and Ben Bauman, are a few of the volunteers who gathered to help with the Christmas Fruit Basket delivers.

Beautiful fruit baskets were only made possible thanks to the generous support of local citizens that donated to the Buddy Poppies Memorial and Veterans Days fundraising events.

A pickup full of super-nice baskets are sorted and sent out for deliveries.

A special Salute to Wayne Leicher, Ken Benson, Jim O’Neil and Rick Ford, who worked behind the scenes to get these baskets prepped and ready for delivery. Also, the VFW Auxiliary members worked their magic making Christmas gifts and cards to hand out to Veteran spouses.

Auxiliary Life Member Christel Ford, along with Andrea Donila, show off the many cards and gifts they deliver to Veterans spouses & widows.

This event always proves to be a fun event for everyone. We hope you can join us 18 December 2025 to help deliver and “get some” Christmas fun too.

The laughs were many and Merry when seeing the Veterans.

To see more pictures of happy Veterans receiving their fruit baskets and other pics of this event click on the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” tab located in the menu above this page. Of course, when it was done it was time for the Post members to regroup and commemorate and report on how their individual visits went. Really… it just an opportunity for more fun.

Above: Members gathered to celebrate another successful year of visits to our needy veterans.

All are welcome to join us for our next VFW Veterans Visit (V3) on 16 January at 1 PM at the Somerby Sr. living Center, Peachtree City, Georgia. You will leave with a smile too.

While the weather was a little cold, the hearts of all who attended made it a sunny warm and loving Christmas to all the Soldiers, Sailors, Airman, Marines and Coast Guard personnel who are at rest at the Camp Memorial Cemetery in Fayetteville Georgia.

Future VFW Auxiliary 9949 Post member Nancy and her husband Life Member William “Tuffy” Handley brushed off the chill temperature to be part of this ceremony

Wonderful remarks, songs and the playing of “Taps” were part of this WAA’s magnificent tribute.

Music (National Anthem and patriotic songs) was a superb accompaniment to the program

Then it was time to place over 1,000 wreaths on Veterans graves. The WAA team was well organized and made this task possible and easy.

WAA section leaders above directed groups to their wreath placing locations

Post members marched up to help answer the call and efficiently completed this important mission.

December’s Meeting Was “Welcome Back & Welcome Aboard”

The 12 December 2024 monthly Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 meeting welcomed home a fighter pilot and four new members.

Above left- Garett, gave a terrific video and oral presentation on his recent experiences as an Air Force pilot flying in the Middle East.

Members started off the evening by snacking on tasty sandwiches made by Post Jr. Vice Ken Benson plus other wonderful donated side dishes. This was followed by Life Member Garrett Otterbein’s accounting of his recent experiences serving in the Middle East as an F-16 Fighter Pilot. He ended his talk by presenting the Post with a state of Georgia flag that flew over the USAF headquarters while he was deployed overseas. His fellow Comrades are so proud of his accomplishments and in his continued service to our nation. We are also so VERY HAPPY that he returned safely back home to his family and friends. Next, the Post welcomed 4 new members to our ranks via the VFW Initiation ritual that the Post conducts quarterly.

This ceremony not only provides education to new members, but also serves as a bonding of all Post Comrades in fellowship with one another.

Four new recruits (two above – left: Clive Scott and Jim Droskinis) are given instruction from Jr. Vice Commander Kin Benson on the obligations and expectations on being a VFW member.

The Post was also honored by being visited by the GA VFW 10th District Commander Vicki Jennings.

Next, it should be noted that the future VFW Post 9949 Auxiliary is getting VERY close to activation. They also attended a portion of the preamble to VFW general membership meeting before breaking off to their own private forum. Lastly, we look forward to all members and volunteers attend the next VFW Veterans Visit (V3) on 19 December at 12:30hrs as we give Christmas fruit baskets to needy Veterans. Location to meet is the Somerby Senior Living Center building 300, 300 Rockaway Road, Peachtree City.

VFW Post 9949 commemorated the 22nd and final VFW national action day of the year, with a Pearl Harbor Day tribute

Peal Harbor Day Remembered

Members of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 gathered at Somerby Senior Living Center in Peachtree City to bring and conduct a tribute to resident Veterans on 7 December 2024.

The event was lead by the above Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy.

Veterans were treated to prayers, placing a wreath, Pearl Harbor survivors video, speaker Walter Donila and finished with the playing of “Taps.”

Above: Veterans watch a firsthand account by Veterans that experienced the attack on Pearl Harbor.
Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy reminded the audience of the great sacrifice that took place on this day 83 years ago.

Appropriate commemoration of the 22 VFW national action dates in U.S. history serve to not only honor those that have gone before us but also to educate on what transpired on these dates.

Post Life Member Walter Donila, the featured speaker, instructed the crowd with multiple facts and intricate details on what led up to and occurred with the attack on Pearl Harbor.

None of these commemorations could happen without dedicated volunteers that often work behind-the-scenes to make it a success. THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS!

Above: Life Member Arnie Geiger sets up the sound system…even though he is still recuperating from hip surgery!

Honoring the dead by serving the living – a core VFW tenet- was marked at this event by placing a wreath, playing “Taps” and a follow on visit to Veterans at Somerby’s Memory Care center.

Above: Post Senior Vice Commander Rick Ford places a wreath adorned with “Pearl Harbor Day” ribbon.

Post Combats Windy & Cool Temperatures With Warm Visits To Vets

21 November 2024, saw once again VFW Post 9949 members and guests fan out to five local senior living facilities and residences. There, they conducted a personal one-on-one visit to Veterans. This is the Post’s monthly VFW Veteran Visits (V3) event that is open to all volunteers. The VFW Auxiliary conducts the same activity to spouses & widows of Veterans. They receive handcrafted cards and flowers. While Veterans get a bag filled with candy and bananas, it’s the personal visit that matters to them. The next visit will be on 19 December. Visit to these Veterans starts at Somerby Senior Living Center, 200 Rockaway Rd, Peachtree City and the visit to spouses/widows starts at Legacy Ridge of PTC, 1967 W. Lanier Ave, Hwy 54, Peachtree City. Both locations start meeting at 1pm.

Life Members (L-R) Tom Rivera, Rick Ford & Wayne Leicher were “pumped” to start their visits to Veterans.

Come join us for our next V3 visit on 19 December. It’s a great way to show some holiday spirit to worthy Veterans spouses and widows. For more information contact the V3 Coordinator Rick Ford (listed in the “Contact Us” tab from the menu above).

Birthday cake celebrating the 249th founding of the United States Marine Corps

Birthdays, Awards & Auxiliary Top November Meeting

In Tun’s Tavern 249 years ago in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the United States Marine Corps was founded. At the November VFW Post 9949 Membership meeting, Comrades celebrated this occasion with cake and singing of the Marine Corps hymn. Two Post Marine Corps Vets had the honor of cutting the cake with a ceremonial saber.

Above Post USMC Veterans: Ed Ramirez Jr. (left) and Tim Tice slice the Marine Corps birthday cake.

Of course, singing the Marine Corps hymn is mandatory for a momentous occasion like this.

Post members singing the Service’s songs is a fun thing…but not always sounding in tune. 🙂

Also celebrating a birthday in November was Life Member Jim Ryan. Recon Ryan is a charter member and a major, major foundation stone that this Post has built upon since 1994. Happy 98 birthday, Jim!

Then, it was time to eat cake and celebrate the Post Chili Cookoff team’s 1st place “People’s Choice” award. Not only did the Post win a $50 check from the Calvin Center but also a cool certificate to display at the Post. Well done to the “Hot Stuff” Cookoff team.

Two members of the Chili Cookoff team (Life Members Rick Ford -left and Ric Lim-right) present Post Commander Ben Bauman (center) with 1st place “People’s Choice Award” certificate.

Also, in a significant event in Post history, VFW Auxiliary recruits gathered, filled out applications and discussed the final steps in making the VFW Post 9949 Auxiliary a reality. These pioneers will become the “charter members” of this organization.

Life Members Ken Benson (left) and John House stand with several of the future VFW Post 9949 Auxiliary members.

There is still time for anyone who is interested in becoming a “charter member” of our VFW Auxiliary. Simply click on the “VFW Post Auxiliary Tab” above for more information.

VFX Auxiliary member Christel Ford (above in red) would be happy to explain how easy it is to join our new Post auxiliary and support the Veterans of Foreign Wars in helping Veterans, their families and the community at large.

The next monthly general membership meeting will be on 12 December starting at 17:30 and will feature a ceremony for the initiation of new members

VFW Post 9949 and the VFW Auxiliary wreaths placed at Peachtree City’s Veterans monument on Veterans Day

11 November is Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada. 11 November 2024 was a fine patriotic day in Peachtree City to commemorate this day.

Joint VFW Post 9949 and American Legion Georgia Post 50 Honor Guard “posted the colors.”

The start of the ceremony hosted by Peachtree City, began with the posting of our United States flag and the colors of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion followed by the singing of the national anthem.

The VFW Post 9949 Jay Flournoy delivered the invocation to a large crowd of Veterans and citizens of the Peachtree City area. This included the city Mayor Kim Learnard, councilmen and other city and state officials.

Above pictured is a portion of the crowd that attended the Veterans Day ceremony

The audience was treated to remarks by the keynote speaker, Will Garner, who spent 26 years on active duty as a US Army officer. His dedicated service all over the world is an example of the sacrifice Veterans make every day in all branches of military service.

Above: proud Army Veteran, Will Garner provided the keynote marks.

Following the remarks, the VFW & VFW Auxiliary placed wreaths at the base of the Veterans monument in memory of all the Veterans who have served before us.

100% of Buddy Poppy donated proceeds benefit the Veterans of Foreign Wars Veterans assistance programs.

Poppies Bloom Donations For Needy Veterans

On 9 November, VFW Post 9949 members marched out to six locations in the Peachtree City, Georgia area. Once there, they set up Buddy Poppy donation stations. Post members and volunteers handed out poppies in remembrance of the Veterans Day weekend commemoration.

Above: Post Life members Wayne Folwer (left) Jim O’Neil (center) and therapy dog “Don” welcome shoppers at Kroger Kedron with a Buddy Poppy.
Above: Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy mans one of the six Buddy Poppy locations.

Poppy donations are an essential part of the Post’s Emergency Relief Fund that can only be used in direct support of needy Veterans and their families. Building handicap access ramps for Veteran’s homes, lodging for homeless Veterans, monthly supplies for visits to 100+ Veterans and their spouses- at five local nursing facilities/residences are a few examples that Buddy Poppy donations have been used by VFW Post 9949.
Post Life Member and Post “Buddy Poppy CINC” Julian Velasquez above shown putting the supplies together for each donation station.

It takes a lot of work behind-the-scenes and at the stations to make these donation drives successful. A HUGE Post salute goes out to Julian Velasquez who orchestrated this event as well as all the Post, Auxiliary and volunteer members across the state who operated the Buddy Poppy donation stations.

Many thanks also goes the wonderful locations that supported this important program: Clothes Less Traveled Kroger Braelin & Kedron, Walmart and Sam’s Club. If you missed out but would still like to help, then please click the “Want To Help And Maybe Donate” tab above. The needy Veterans and their spouses will be very grateful that you did.

Post Pavers Strike Again!

Just in time for Veterans Day, G.I. Joe Bowler’s PAVERS laid down some beautiful bricks around the Veterans Monument in Peachtree City, GA. These magnificent marble bricks are engraved with Veterans’ names, ranks and dates of service.

Above (L-R) are part of the Post Pavers “All Life Members” team: Jay Flournoy, Arnie Geiger, Joe Bowler and Larry Rosenthal.

These permanent marble bricks are a great way for family members to honor their Veterans and it’s easy to do. Just click on the “Veterans Brick Memorial” tab above on this page. There you also see more brick details and a link to the order form. Fill out the form and send it in. We’ll have the next batch of bricks installed in time for Memorial Day 2025.

The Veterans Monument with the surrounding veterans bricks are located near the Peachtree City library and City Hall, 201 Willowbend Rd, Peachtree City, GA.

The nearby city library maintains a binder that contains a map to facilitate quick location of a Veteran’s brick. Another job well done by Joe Bowler’s VFW Post 9949 Pavers…now get ready for the next batch to arrive in May 2025!

Above members of the VFW 9949 Chili Cookoff team (left to right) Veterans: Ron Locker, Rick Ford, Ric Lim and VFW Auxiliary Christel Ford

The day was full of music, hay rides, dance performance and some really great chili…and there were some beverages on hand to cool down the tastebuds.

The above was the stage for the event. The only thing hotter than the chili was the music of the band.

The Calvin Center’s Equestrian team provides unlimited happiness and care to needy Veterans that get the opportunity to ride their horses in a safe and controlled manner. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 is proud to be a longtime supporter, including supporting this wonderful fund raising event.

Arnie Geiger was one of the several Veterans that came and supported this worthy fund raiser.

The audience was treated in sampling many, many, many outstanding chilies produced by superb participating teams.
The VFW Post 9949 team shown above handing out tasting samples.
Oh wow, this is really good!” said after tasting some VFW hot stuff.

Post Life Member and Chef Ric Lim describes his chili as starting out with an initial kick that quickly meows out into wonderful flavor. This combination worked as the chili was given the “People’s Choice Award” that came with nice certificate, check and a whole lot of bragging rights.

Above Ron Locker (left) & Ric Lim celebrate VFW Post 9949 winning the 2024 Calvin Center Chili Cookoff’s “People’s Choice” award.

Post Gives Tribute To Women Veterans

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 on 18 October 2024 held a commemoration for women Veterans and those currently in Military Service. The program acknowledges all of the great contributions women in military service have given to our nation from the very beginning of our country’s history. VFW Post 9949 members and attending audience were honored by remarks delivered from the keynote speaker: Brigadier General Nikki Olive (USA, Ret). We are the world’s number one military thanks to leadership from women like B.G. Olive, and all other women who have served and are currently serving in uniform.

The Post salutes a big “thank you” to BG Olive and Post Life Member Wayne Leicher for making this event truly memorable and impressive.

The weather was cool and crisp for the 19th VFW’s national action dates in U.S. history. It was also wonderful to see a fine group of lady Veterans who came to join with other women comrades for this special ceremony.

Cake for the 125th VFW Anniversary

Marking 125 Years of Service

On 10 October at the Peachtree City Veterans Center, Veterans, city officials, dignitaries and numerous guests celebrated the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ 125th anniversary of service to our nation (1899-2024). The Peachtree City’s VFW Post 9949 members celebrated this event by hosting a cookout at the Post.

Above some of the work in preparation for the celebration, which included live music, games, hamburgers, hotdogs, and tons of other food and beverages.

Being Peachtree City’s first and oldest Veterans organization it was a terrific honor that two city councilman celebrated with us by cutting the cake with a ceremonial saber.

Left- Councilman Clint Howard along with Councilman Frank Destadio (right) conduct the ceremonial “first cut” using an Army saber.

Additionally, the celebration, included awarding Coweta – Fayette County EMC, the VFW Post 9949’s “Employer of the Year- 2024” Award.

Coweta – Fayette EMC’s Jeremy Arant, Manager Member Services, receives a flag and proclamation from Post Commander Ben Bauman

Post members have long appreciated support that EMC has given this Post over many years. The 12.5 % increase in hiring Veterans last year was a terrific achievement in supporting Veterans and their families.

Post members stand for the reading of the proclamation certifying the United States flag presented to Coweta – Fayette EMC, was flown over the city of Peachtree City in recognition for being the VFW Post 9949’s “Veterans Employer of the Year-2024.”

After all the presentations and their supporting remarks were completed it was time eat that beautiful cake. Thanks to help of the VFW Auxiliary and future Auxiliary members who came up and sliced the cake into manageable portions while wielding a magnificent saber. That alone was entertaining to watch.

Post Goes VFW District Recruiting

The last two weekends of September found VFW Post 9949 members recruiting for new Comrades at two VFW District recruiting drives. The first event was for 10th GA VFW District. It was held 19-22 September at Ingram Farm Heritage Fest at Minton Farm in Woolsey GA. This antique tractor focused festival was filled with lots good old Georgia country crafts, and displays.

Pictured above is the VFW 10th District recruiting station at Minton farm.

The following week was time for the 1st District’s recruitment drive. The hurricane didn’t stop Post members from attending on Friday, 27 September and working this really enormous and impressive event.

Above (left to right) VFW GA 1st District Cmdr Dwayne Kilbourne, Post 9949 Sr. Vice Cmdr Rick Ford, GA VFW AUX Christel Ford and VFW Department of GA Adjutant General Sherron Conyers all having fun recruiting.

Besides the real tasty Fair food, the sites, sounds and animal exhibitions that comes with going to a State Fair, meeting super-great fellow VFW members is a real treat. The education and experience gained by going to these events are super valuable and will pay big dividends at other future VFW recruiting events. Besides, it’s just plain fun going to the Fair. Especially when the perfect recruiting location, supplies, and friendly coaching are all there waiting for you.

It’s fun going recruiting specially when it’s at the State Fair.

10 October 2024 VFW Post 9949 will be celebrating the 125th anniversary of VFW Years of Service.

Hometown Peachtree City hero, VFW Post 9949 member and Iraqi war Veteran Christopher Wagnon stands with son Nathan saluting, while remembering the sacrifices of Veterans that fought in Iraq.

31 August 2024 marked the 14 anniversary of the End of “Operation Iraqi Freedom-2010” Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 commemorated this anniversary with prayers, laying a wreath, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, a missing man formation flyover and remarks from Iraqi war veteran and VFW Post Member Christopher Wagnon.

Part of the crowd that came to listen to words from an Iraq War Veteran and Bronze Star recipient.

Too often our daily lives become too busy and we forget the cost that our military women and men paid in service to the nation. The Iraq War totaled 4,492 killed in action and 32, 942 wounded in action. It was so fitting that United States VFW Posts around the world paid tribute to these Veterans on this day. It was also fitting and spectacular that the local Falcon RV Squadron conducted a missing man formation that was flown by two pilots of the Iraq War. This included the Flight Lead call sign: “Torque”. It was amazing to see.

Missing man formation flown by the Peachtree City’s Falcon RV Squadron at precisely 09:10hrs 31 August 2024
Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy (far left) reminded us all of the true cost that was given by the women and men who served as our nation’s warriors in the war in Iraq.

The conclusion of this commemoration was the playing of “Taps” thanks to Post Life Members Al Hogg and Arnie Geiger. We placed several more pictures of this event in the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” page.
Big appreciation for support goes out to all the Post members, community and the Pilots of the Falcon RV Squadron that participated in making this 14th anniversary event possible.

For over 130 times VFW Post 9949 Honor Guard members have preformed ‘Military Honors’ for departed Veterans and their families.

Post Honors The Dead By Serving The Living – Again.

It was a beautiful hot Georgia morning on 17 August 2024, when the VFW 9949 honor guard members started arriving at a gravesite for a fellow Veteran. It was the 133d time that the Post was called upon to provide final “Military Honors.” This time it was for Army Veteran Carl Walter, Sr.

Honor Guard members like Jay Flournoy, show up early to receive instructions and practice before the funeral ceremony.

To make the ‘Honors’ service go as professionally as possible, team members have to “walk the ground,” coordinate with family members and officials and finally- practice their tasks.

Post Honor Guard Captain Al Hogg provides last minute instructions in regards to the specifics of this ceremony.

This tradition of giving final Military Honors is something Veterans and families in the Peachtree City area have counted on from VFW Post 9949 for the last 30 years.

Above: Some of the family members that gather for the funeral and the rendering of Military Honors.

The playing of “Taps” and folding of the US Flag is a fitting reminder of the honorable service that Veterans have given to our nation.

Above Post Life Member Arnie Geiger precisely folds the flag 13 times representing the original Colonies.
Life Member Stony Lohr (centered above) renders a salute during the playing of taps.

In fitting with the VFW motto of “Honoring the dead by serving the living,” the VFW Post provides these services to the family and guests of the Veteran at no cost. The culmination of the ceremony is a presentation of the flag to the next of kin.

Above: deceased Veteran Carl Walter’s son receives the US Flag folded in a triangle in reference to the colonial soldiers’ tri-cornered hat.

The Office in charge when giving the flag states: “On behalf of the government of the United States of America, a grateful nation, through the Veterans of Foreign Wars Peachtree City Post 9949. I am honored to present you with this flag of our country, under which your Father has so honorably and faithfully served.” This honor VFW Post 9949 will proudly continually to render when asked to support our fallen fellow Veterans and their families. The Falcon RV Squadron in conjunction with the VFW Post 9949 Veterans Visit (V3), conducted a spectacular flyover of the Somerby Sr. Living Center in Peachtree City.

Planes, Friends, Vets & Spouses….What A Great V3!

It will be hard to “top” the VFW Veteran Visit (V3) that occurred on 15 Aug 2024. It seemed that the 90+ degrees hot weather brought out the best in everyone. Veterans, residence and visiting spectators, were treated to a wonderful multi ship flyover that roared above the Somerby campus. Smiles of delight, admiration, and appreciation were everywhere.

Above left: America Legion GA Post 50 member John Matias along with VFW Life Member Tom Riviera (left) enjoyed the event and comradeship along with all the fellow Veterans they visited.

Many V3 experienced team members can testify that the best visits with Veterans occur when their family, friends and neighbors are present. Nothing beats these visits when joined in by VFW members handing out bags of bananas and candy.

Army Veteran Robert shows proof that V3 visits bring smiles; especially when accompanied by a wonderful family and neighbors.

Of course ones knows that when 4 or 5 Veterans get in a group the stories will fly and the Comradeship will sail. Besides having solutions to ALL the world’s problems, these Veterans always have advice to expertly give to one another. 🙂

Above Post Life Member Ben Gross (top Left) leads an impromptu group of fellow Veterans: Andrew (top right), Nathan (bottom left) and Jack in an a friendly “discussion of the day” pose.

It’s all in fun and makes life so much more enjoyable while one peels a banana and savors delicious candy with fellow Veterans. The VFW 9949 Post always welcomes volunteers to join the experience and take part in the fun when visiting with these wonderful Veterans. We start the V3 every 3rd Thursday of the month at 1PM at the Somerby Sr. Lvn. Ctr, 300 Rockaway Road, Peachtree City, GA and breakout to 4 other facilities in the local area.

Above: VFW Auxiliary Life Member Christel Ford shares a smile and bracelet made by Veteran spouse Sarah. It’s Sarah’s way of making people happy.

The VFW Auxiliary simultaneously conducts visits to veterans spouses and widows at two of the Peachtree City facilities. They hand to each spouse/widow beautiful flowers and homemade craft cards. Finally, a special Post salute, goes out to the fine pilots of the Falcon Field RV Squadron for their expert airmenship. It looked and sounded super-great! We hope to see everyone on 19 September for our next V3.

VFW Post 9949 delegate attended the 111th VFW National Convention in Louisville, KY

Post Goes National

The VFW National Convention July 27 – August 1, 2024 marked the 125th “Years of Service” giving to Veterans and our Nation. This year two Peachtree City residents (Rick Ford and his wife Christel) attended the convention.

Pictured above: VFW Auxiliary member Christel Ford and VFW Post 9949 Sr. Vice Commander and National Convention Delegate Rick Ford.

A mass of over 9,500 VFW delegates plus 4,500 VFW Auxiliary members gathered to conduct important VFW & AUX business, share experiences with one another and have a whole lotta fun.
Above is a portion of the crowd that congregated in a show of patriotism and camaraderie.

By far the best part of the convention was meeting people and including the top National and State leadership of VFW and VFW Auxiliary.

Above Post Sr. Vice Cmdr Rick Ford shown meeting the Commander-in-Chief Duane Sarmiento. 🙂 He actually did meet the CINC 10 seconds after this picture was taken.

Multiple National awards were given out to teachers, Patriots Pen essay winners, employee of the year, etc…, including the national Voice of Democracy (VOD) Patriots Pen award winner.

Above the 2024 VOD VFW National winner Sophia Lin delivered her VOD submission to a standing ovation and received a $35,000 scholarship check provided by the VFW

In addition to the award presentations, attendees were treated to memorable, speeches and presentations by a legion of our Nation’s dignitaries.

Several dignitaries like Kentucky Senator Ron Paul addressed the convention.

The VFW Auxiliary had 4,500 enthusiastic members attend this year’s convention.

In related good news, both the VFW and the VFW Auxiliary grew, for the second year in a row, in both members and Posts worldwide. Plus, in a project that took nearly 3 years to complete, our VFW Post 9949 successfully authored an amendment to the VFW National Ritual manual. Now, when the 6,000+ VFW Posts worldwide initiate new members into their Post, the US Space Force personnel will be included. The Jr. Vice Commander’s ritual instructions will now read: …”for just as long as there is a soldier, sailor, marine, airman or guardian, so long must our work continue.” Next, as part of the fun, convention goers dressed in patriotic attire and marched through the convention center grouped by states. Georgia’s large number of attendees, plus our enthusiasm, made us look good as we marched by and saluted the Commander-in-Chief.

Above: 10, 000 + members start to gather in prep for a patriotic march in show of support to the nation and our VFW CINC.

For more information and pictures of the 111th VFW National Convention please go to the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” page via the tab listed above. We hope to see you in Columbus, Ohio next year for the 112th VFW National Convention, as we celebrate 126 years of service to our Veterans and nation.

VFW Post 9949 Member Jim Fogg an author and himself featured in many books is one of the many heroes in Post 9949

A Post Full Of Heroes

At the August VFW Post General Membership meeting, held on 8 August in the Peachtree City Veterans Center, Comrades and guests were treated to a detailed narration given by USAF Vietnam Veteran Jim Fogg. Jim is an absolute hero, earning the Air Force’s Distinguish Flying Cross, as well as multiple other medals, for his service in Southeast Asia.

Above, Jim is showing the audience on the map one of the many locations where he piloted is his C-130 aircraft while leading recovery missions for downed pilots.

After socializing, eating pizza, salad and consuming beverages, Jim’s presentation was an excellent segue into the official business of the Post that evening.

Comrades above listen intently. Jim is a retired, Delta Airlines, captain who authored several books, including books on his passion for elk hunting.

Jim continues to serve his Post and fellow Veterans by being an active member of the VFW Veterans Visits (V3) Post team. Each month V3 members conduct one-on-one visits to Veterans at five care facilities throughout the Peachtree City Georgia area. Heroes like Comrade Jim Fogg can be found throughout the membership ranks of VFW Post 9949 and we are so lucky to have them live in our community and be members of our Post. The next VFW General membership meeting will be held on 12 September at the Peachtree City Veterans Center. Please use the “Contact Us” tab above in the menu box for more information on how you too can be a member of VFW Post 9949 and join the ranks of heroes.

Peachtree City Veterans and community gather to commemorate the Signing of the Korean Armistice in 1953

Post Remembers The “Forgotten War”

VFW Post 9949 Korean War Veterans take part in the “Signing of the Korean Armistice in 1953” commemorative tribute

On 27 July 2024 at the Peachtree City Veterans Monument, four Korean War Veterans came to lay a wreath. The wreath they placed had a ribbon that read: Korean Armistice 1953. For on that date 71 years earlier the official signing of the Korean Armistice took place.

Above: Life Member Arnie Geiger (far right) introduces two Korean War Veterans (Ben Gross-left and Desker Campbell-center) to speak about their experiences.

These four Veterans: Ben Gross, Desker Campbell, Al Hogg and Bud Ellis were joined by multiple members of the Post and Peachtree City community.

Life Member and Past Post Commander Bud Ellis (in red) a bomber pilot in Korea addressed the crowd on where he was on that day 71 years ago.

The laying the wreath, followed by prayers, and remarks help all of us to appreciate and not forget these Veterans’ service and their sacrifices they made for our country.
One should also not forget that this conflict is still not over. We continue to have our military forces deployed and on guard in far away Korea. They today are making sacrifices and are also extraordinary Veterans.
Centered above is Post Member Tim Trice, a proud Veteran who served on the DMZ in Korea.

Life Member Walter Donila gave a brief and exacting history of the significance of signing the armistice.

Comrades Donila (left) and Campbell (right) discuss the details of the Korean armistice signing.

Then the audience was moved by the closing of this commemoration with the playing of “Taps” by Post Life Member and Korean War Veteran Al Hogg.

VFW Post 9949 Charter Life Member Al Hogg -center blue shirt- told of his Korean experience and later played “Taps” from a bugle.

To see more pictures of this event please go to the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” page listed above. Finally the Post sends out a BIG salute to all Korean War Veterans everywhere. You are certainly not forgotten by your fellow Comrades of VFW Post 9949.

We meet at 1pm at the Somerby Senior Living Center, 300 Rockaway Road, Peachtree City, GA. No experience is required and it takes about an hour of your time. Also, the VFW Auxiliary simultaneously visits Veterans’ spouses and widows. They start their visits at Legacy Ridge of Peachtree City, 1967 W. Lanier Ave., Highway 54 Peachtree City, GA. 11 July 2024 VFW Post 9949 General Membership meeting saw the VFW Post 9949’s Quartermaster Jim O’Neal busy counting money and writing checks. In appreciation for helping with the Wreaths Across America program (Post members helped decorate graves of Veterans with beautiful wreaths for the holidays) the local Greater Fayette County Women’s Club bestow a check to the Post. This event that is SO special, SO well organized has become a very important experience that our Post Comrades look forward to each year.

Post Scout Coordinator, Life Member Dallas reads Hannah’s award citation to the members

Scout Hannah Claiborne work on an animal rescue program was a two year project. It resulted in a Girl Scout “Gold Award”- the highest honor bestowed to a Girl Scout. Well done, Hannah, your project has helped make our community a better place to live for our animals. VFW Post 9949 renders a mighty salute to both Scout Hannah and the local Wreaths Across America team for all their good work. However, the night wasn’t without some fun filled financial controversy. Apparently, the VFW Post 9949 Kedron Kroger Buddy Poppy team, led my Arnie Geiger and Ken Benson, received the most donations from Memorial Day. The Commander did point out that the official After Action Report has yet to be released, they still went ahead to give them a certificate.

Life Member Julian Velasquez AKA “CINC Poppy” (above, center grey) reads the certificate award for the team collecting the most Buddy Poppy donations to the “apparent” winning team’s leaders pictures left above.

In good fun, some, of the Post Members cheered, applauded and congratulate the Kedron team. …just wait till next time the Buddy Poppies are being handed out…
Above Kedron team leaders and Post Life Members (left) Ken Benson and Arnie Geiger hoist the highly contested winning team certificate

The absolute winners of all this are the Veterans and their families who receive assistance directly from funds collected by these Buddy Poppy donation drives. 100% of the funds collected go to helping needy Veterans. Another salute goes to all the Post members who helped serve at six different locations and especially to the citizens of the Peachtree City community who generously donated their money and proudly wear the Buddy Poppy. More pictures of the July meeting can be found via clicking the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” tab above.

The Post hopes to see you at the next General Membership meeting on 8 August. We have two exciting guest speakers ready to talk and present stories of their time in Korea, Vietnam and even in Cuba. Also, please circle your calendar for the 27th of July. Join our VFW Post 9949 Korean War Veterans at 09:00hrs at the flag pole/Veteran’s monument (vicinity of the Peachtree city library/ City Hall) for a commemoration ceremony of the “Signing of the Korean Armistice in 1953.”

Hot Temps, Cool Bananas and Great Vets

The afternoon of 20 June 2024 was a hot one in Peachtree City. Yet the hot weather didn’t stop a formation of Post 9949 Comrades from visiting 78 Veterans at 5 facilities in Peachtree City. Dropping off a bag with bananas and candy comes with a handshake or sometimes hug, is really appreciated by many of these brave Veterans. Additionally, the VFW Auxiliary had 3 Volunteers that touched 29 spouses of Veterans at two care facilities also in Peachtree City. Those ladies received roses and patriotic cards made by caring volunteers. The auxiliary ladies met at 1pm at Legacy Ridge to chat and personally write in the cards before visiting spouses.

For this month Life Member Ben Gross (above right) delivered to Army Veterans like David, a Happy 249th Army Birthday card made by an auxiliary member, plus a piece of birthday cake along with the usual bananas & candy treat bag.
Comrade John (center) and his two sons, all Army Veterans! They appreciate the monthly visits by our VFW Post.

The monthly V3s can only be accomplished, thanks to generous donations of money and time from citizens and Veterans of Peachtree City.

The staff too appreciate and knows the important benefits of visiting Veterans that VFW Post 9949 does monthly

If you would like to support these visits or come-out and join us for the next V3, then please go to the above “Want to help and maybe donate?” tab.

Post Comrades (left to right) Tom Riviera & Julian Velasquez received their bags before setting out to visit Veterans.

The next V3 will be on 18 July 2024. We meet at Somerby Senior Living Center, 300 Rockaway Road, Peachtree City, GA at 13:00hrs (1 PM). All are welcome, the Veterans would love to see and talk to you. For more information on going on the next V3, go to the “Contact Us” page and connect with the VFW Veterans Visit (V3) Coordinator.

Before handing out treat bags for distribution, the VFW Post 9949 Senior Vice Commander Rick Ford (above) expressed his gratitude for all the great Comrades and volunteers that make this V3 program work each month for our needy Veterans.

Happy to report that Post Life Member Wayne Flower is mending well and looks great. We were happy to include him into this months V3.

Celebrating the Army’s 249th Birthday was just one part of a packed meeting to a packed audience.

”Feed’em, Initiate’em, Entertain’em & Send’em Home”

To a full house, VFW Post 9949 conducted it’s monthly General Membership meeting on 13 June 2024. It started with a cookout, feeding 40 folks with hamburgers, hotdogs and all kinds of sides dishes (including the Sr. Vice’s famous pretzels) all thanks to Post Life Member/Post Mess SGT Ken Benson. Ken finished off the dinner with two delicious birthday cakes in honor of the Army’s 249th birthday and our nation’s flag. Wow! Those cakes were great. Especially when cut and served by the oldest and newest members of the Post.

Army Comrade Rick Lim (left) and Army Life Member Comrade Ben Gross (right) used a saber to cut the birthday cake. This came after the Post sang Happy Birthday and the Army Song.

The Post also honored Peachtree City Recreation and Special Events Coordinator Maria Puckett, who was instrumental in assisting the Post with conducting the Memorial Day ceremony with a VFW Post 9949 Certificate of Appreciation.

The audience was then given a superb presentation by Post Life Member John House on the origins of US flag and the Army birthday.

Comrade House in his historical presentation explained how the US Army‘s birthday and the US flag’s birthday both ended up on 14 June …but not the same year.

The Post also conducted an intensive VFW Auxiliary recruiting campaign. Soon this effort will lead to the establishment of the VFW Post 9949 Auxiliary! If you are interested please text VFW Aux Member Christel Ford at 770-356-2829. Also this night, four new Comrade members were Initiated into the Post. Welcome aboard Comrades: Cordis Carter, Rick Lim, Clark Verbockel and Don Gangell. Their strengths and skills will add to us greatly as we continue to grow the Post. Finally, the Commander conducted a focused general membership business meeting, ended the night and sent folks home before 20:00hrs! At the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” tab above we have posted a few more pictures of the 13 June 2024 meeting. Life Member of VFW Post 9949 Walter Donila led a D-Day commemoration ceremony at the PTC’s Veterans Monument

Post Remembers 80th D-Day Anniversary

Nations around the world and cities across our country conducted tributes to the thousands of military members who risked their lives on June 6, eighty years ago. This includes Veterans, led by VFW Post 9949 in Peachtree City.

A history of the world’s largest amphibious operation was expertly delivered by Comrade Walter Donila.

From the strategic level operational level and tactical level, Walter covered it all. The sacrifices and cost of lives were echoed by the Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy during his prayerful remarks.

Chaplain Flournoy reminded all of the high cost that was paid for victory.

Laying of wreath at the foot of the Veteran’s monument, plus a member wearing the period attire, made this commemoration absolutely on target.

Post Life member Gary Rossomme brought authentic realism to the uniform of the day for paratroopers 80 years ago

By orchestrating this event the VFW Post 9949 allowed the Veterans and citizens of Peachtree City an opportunity to learn and express their gratitude to all that participated in that historic day.

Saluting all those who came before us on the beaches of Normandy France 6 June 1944

Bring your spouse and come hungry!

VFW Post 9949 Members joined fellow Veterans at Peachtree City’s City Hall Flag Pole & Somerby Senior Living Center in leading remembrance ceremonies in honor of Memorial Day

It Was A Memorable Memorial Day

On 25 May 2024 in Peachtree City, GA. had stormy weather in the morning and steamy sunny weather in the afternoon. None of the weather conditions could dampen the drive of local Veteran’s organizations, along with local citizens, in honoring fallen servicemen and women on this sincere occasion.

The inclement weather forced the placing of the Post wreath along with other activities inside Peachtree City’s City Hall chambers.

The program called for: prayers, live band music with singing, youth awards presentations, placing of wreaths, musket volley, bagpipe music, flyover and finally playing of taps. The lightning and strong winds plus rain forced the organizers to pack everything into City Hall. Other than the flyover, the leaders made this program complete and a major success. This was a reflection due the months of preparation by many groups: VFW Post 9949, American Legion GA Post 50, Marine Corps League, Sons of the American Revolution, Peachtree Wind Ensemble, Boy & Girl Scouts, Peachtree City’s staff and others.

Above: the packed City Hall audience listened to Thomas Fraser from Scotland on bagpipe play Amazing Grace

That afternoon, many of these same Veterans commemorated Memorial Day with a service at the Somerby Sr. Living Center in Peachtree City.

Above picture shows a portion of the team of Veterans that made sure senior residences, often with mobility issues, were able to attend and honor deceased Veterans on this Memorial Day .

Buddy Poppies Grow Support For Veterans

25 May 2025, saw VFW Post members and volunteers at five locations, working 8 stations handing out VFW Buddy Poppies. Even though the weather was hot, with thunder storms that passed through, it failed to dampen the enthusiasm in handing out poppies and receiving donations from generous citizens.

Here Life Member Walter Donila is shown handing out a Buddy Poppy.

Educating citizens that 100% of the donations for the Buddy Poppies goes directly to support Veterans programs results in wallets and purses being opened with generous donations given.

Above: Post member Tim Tyson along with VFW Post 9949 Commander Ben Bauman’s daughter Alana Bauman help educate citizens on the meaning/purpose of the VFW’s Buddy Poppy program.

Without the support of stores like Kroger, Sam’s Club, Clothes Less Traveled, and Walmart in allowing us to set up these donation stations, this program wouldn’t be a success.

Above is one of the typical donation stations where citizens learn about the Buddy Poppy program, receive application for a Veteran’s bricks, VFW membership and other activities VFW Post 9949 conducts.
Building a handicap accessible ramp for a disabled Veteran to get in and out of his house pictured above and purchasing supplies for monthly Veterans and spouses visits pictured below below, are just two examples of what Buddy Poppy funds are used for by VFW Post 9949.

It took a lot of hard work to make this fund raiser a success. Big thanks to all the volunteers and a special salute that goes out to Julian Velasquez for his leadership over this project. Well done, Comrades! You did the Post proud.

Above VFW Auxiliary Life Member Christel Ford is just one of the many volunteers that gave of their time Saturday to work the VFW Buddy Poppy donation fund drive.
A special thanks goes to the Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy pictured above, in making sure we had a truly blessed Buddy Poppy day.

Pavers Lead The Way!

21 May 2024- One can tell that Memorial Day or Veterans’s Day is about to be commemorated in Peachtree City, by seeing members of the VFW Post 9949, led by Comrade Joe Bowler, working to install Veterans bricks at the Veterans’ Monument outside of City Hall and library. These lifetime marble memorial bricks add prestige, honor and overall appropriate ambience to this location.

Comrades (left to right) Rick Ford, Bo Hill and Arnie Geiger share in the fun of working together installing Veterans bricks.

Many fellow citizens seek meaningful and lasting ways to honor family members and friends who were Veterans who served our nation honorably. These beautiful bricks serve as a permanent and meaningful reminder of their service members whose names, branch of service and dates are inscribed on each brick.

Life Member Joe Bowler points to a row of 15 bricks that this couple (Lori & Michael McLaughlin) secured for their Veteran family members.

The importance of remembering Veterans and their service to our nation is too great to be quantified. Yet the cost their sacrifices and their story can be remembered by citizens who come, sit and marvel at the names of men and women Veterans that are marked on these stones.

Comrade Bill Werling shares history with USAF Veteran Andrew Flournoy while seated at the Veterans Monument.

If you would like a Veteran brick installed for your favorite Veteran then please click the “Veterans Brick Memorial” tab located above this page. It is easy to do and can be done from anywhere in the world.

VFW Post 9949 Life members Ben Gross(left) and Arnie Geiger (right) visited fellow Veteran Frank Stanley (USN). Simultaneously, the VFW Auxiliary visited Frank’s wife at a nearby rehabilitation center.

Did Someone Say “Comradeship?”

…”to preserve and strengthen comradeship…” This is a capital tenet found in the congressional charter of the Veterans of War. One of the many ways, VFW Post 9949 members exercise this principle is via the VFW Veterans Visits (V3) conducted monthly in the Peachtree City, GA local area.

Members of the V3 meet at Somerby Sr. Lvn Ctr and then breakout to 4 other facilities to visit Veterans each month.

Besides giving Patriotic presentations, conducting ceremonies, parades, and funeral honors, the V3 provides a unique one-on-one visit experience to grateful Veterans and spouses. This month over 100 of these visits were conducted.

New this month was a visit to Navy Veteran Marilu Puckett. Like all the visited Veterans each month, Marilu was given a treat bag of bananas & candy.

The cost of sustaining this monthly program can only happen via the support of the local generous citizens that contribute to the “Buddy Poppy” program. Be on the lookout for free “Buddy Poppies” with donation jars at stores in the Peachtree City area 25 May 2023. 100% of these donations go to support Veteran programs. The cost of time given by our Post members and volunteers in making these V3s successful is priceless. Now that’s comradeship. If you would like to help donate to this program then click the “Want to help and maybe donate” tab at the top of this page.

May Is For Poppies and Installments

The 9 May 2024 VFW Post 9949 general membership meeting featured a brief history presentation of Buddy Poppies as well as the Buddy Poppy display model. Life Member Julian Velasquez (AKA CINC Buddy Poppy) designed 7 kits each with the items shown in the picture above (each packed in a separate sealed tub) for use in the upcoming Buddy Poppy donation drive 25 May 2024. The plan is to have stations during the day located at both Peachtree City Krogers, Walmart, Clothes Less Traveled and Sam’s Club. Another major feature of the meeting was the installation of Post Officers for 2024.

Commander Ben Bauman receives the Post gavel to serve another year from past Post Commander Stony Lohr

With a slate of officers assigned and appointed for the upcoming year, it should be another wonderful year of big progress for VFW Post 9949 and its members.

The VFW Post 9949 Staff above is showed taking their oath of office.

Next month the Commander has directed a cookout for the Post starting at 17:30hrs, 13 June 2024. He wants everyone to bring their spouse, eat hearty, have a good time and turn-in applications for the brand new VFW POST 9949 AUXILIARY! Just think, these will be the “Charter Members” of something really great and super important to our Post, Veterans and their families plus the local community. We are really counting on seeing everyone there.

Victory In Europe!

On 8 May 2024, VFW Post 9949 members commemorated “Victory in Europe Day- 1945” also known as “VE Day.”

Life Member Bill Werling places a VE Day wreath at the Peachtree City’s Veteran’s Monument as part of the tribute for those who fought WW II in Europe, that ended in 1945.

Comrade Bill Werling gave a historical presentation of the events that led up to the final days of World War II in Europe. It was “spot on” and led to many discussions by attendees.

Above is a picture of part of the Post members who attended the VE Day tribute.

This marks the 8th out of 17 VFW Commemorative Tribute dates executed by Post members this year. Next up is the Memorial Day commemoration on 27 May 2024. It will take place at the same Veteran’s Monument in front of the Peachtree City Library, 201 Willowbend Road, Peachtree City, GA starting at 9 o’clock. All Post members and their families are strongly encouraged to attend this marvelous and grand memorial observance.

Post Members “Derby” For Veterans

VFW Post 9949 is a supporter of the “Horses & Warriors” program which is part of the Calvin Center in Hampton, GA. Placing needy Veterans suffering from all kinds of trauma on the back of a horse makes life better for these deserving Vets. The Calvin Center’s mission statement is: “Sparking growth through enriching, retreats, and outdoor adventures”. It takes lots of funding and volunteer help to make their programs worthwhile for Veterans and their families. VFW Post 9949 gives both funding and many hours of volunteer help to this worthy organization.

VFW Life members Mark Weaver (left) and Arnie Geiger (right in blue) were part of the Post members that had a great time enjoying dinner, live music and watching the horses run the KY derby.

This fundraiser was very successful and raised nearly $26,000. Thanks to all the 200+ generous people that attended. RIDE ON Calvin Center with Horses and mighty Veteran Warriors!

Post Gives Back To Community

Around the world VFW and Auxiliary members turned out on 4 May 2023 as part of the 3d annual VFW’s“Day of Service” #stillserving campaign.

Life member Comrade Wayne Fowler worked in the electronics department of Clothes Less Traveled thrift store in Peachtree City, GA.

By concentrating on Veteran-led community service projects on this day, the VFW intends to bring focus to the role Veterans play in the well-being of their community and surrounding areas.

The Clothes Less Traveled thrift store team really appreciated the volunteer help by Post members

Members helped the Clothes Less Traveled the thrift store with the sorting of clothes, preparing electronics, greeting customers as they come in the door to fixing shopping carts and more. It’s a win-win for the community. The Clothes Less Traveled organization has donated over $8 million back to the community through their sales of donated goods

VFW Auxiliary member Christel Ford (in blue) is helping sorting clothes.

It was a fun and rewarding time, with even Post Life member Chris Clarke singing storewide his favorite tunes.-AWESOME! This Day of Service shows the Peachtree City community that our Post is not only located in Peachtree City but our members and families are part of Peachtree City… a very good part. For more photos of activities at this event, please click the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” tab above. A big Post salute of “thank you” goes to Jay Flournoy and Chris Clarke for making this worthy service event happen.

Post led a Celebration of Life & Military Honors for Life Member Jim Rogers

Post Bids Farewell To An Outstanding Marine

On Monday 22 April 2024, the VFW Post 9949’s Chaplain Jay Flournoy led a Celebration of Life service for one of our Post’s beloved members. Life Member Jim Rogers passed away on 8 April 2024.

Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy presides over the service, providing words of comfort and sympathy to the family, friends and many Veterans in attendance

Comrade Rogers had a truly historic active duty career in the Marine Corps serving in World War II, Korea, and multiple tours in Vietnam. An active member in VFW Post 9949, Jim Rogers also served as the Grand Marshall of the Peachtree City, Fourth of July parade last year.

April Showers Bring VFW Auxiliary Flowers To Veteran’s Spouses/Widows

On 18 April 2024, 34 spouses of Veterans residing in two local nursing facilities in Peachtree City received cards & flowers from the VFW Auxiliary plus volunteers. This is in conjunction with VFW Post 9949’s monthly VFW Veterans Visits (V3).

Above, a portion of the V3 team, having fun with Army Vet John (far left), a Veteran they visited during the April V3

During this month’s V3 Post members had one-on-one visits with 76 needy Veterans at five care facilities and two private residences. It takes a wonderful group of volunteers that step up each month along with a bite of logistics to make these visits successful.

Above members receive a part of 228 bananas plus 700 pieces of candy that make up the 76 treat bags for Veterans to handout.

The Post is very grateful to these volunteers that make this program a success. Come join us for the next V3 on 16 May 2024. We will meet at the Somerby Sr. Living Center in Peachtree City at 1 PM. All are welcome. For more information, contact the V3 Coordinator using the “Contact Us” tab above.

Post Turns 30!

Members of VFW Post 9949 and guests gathered on 11 April for a cookout to celebrate the birth of the Post, which officially took place on 14 April 1994 in Peachtree City, GA. Beside member’s wives, guests included representatives from the GA Department and VFW District 10. Best of all, three charter members, signers of the original charter were present to lead us in the celebration.

Jr. Vice Ken Benson puts on a cooking class on how to do a cookout right.

With speeches from VIPs like the VFW GA 10th District Commander Leo Ott and the GA Senior Vice Joe Couch made this a memorable occasion.
The Sr. Vice even promised to be at our 60th celebration in 30 years!

The celebration was even better when you have super food to go with it. Once again, Mess Sergeant Ken Benson, despite the traffic jams was able to come through and cook some burgers, chicken and hotdogs to perfection.

The VFW GA Sr. Vice Commander Joe Couch checks his phone before the meeting.

The VFW 9949 Post members, Veterans, Veteran’s families and the Community are glad to call Peachtree City their home.

Members gathered at one of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial Day commemoration sites

What A Bunch Of Commemorations We Had!

Over the 2024 Easter weekend VFW Post 9949 paid tribute to Veterans of both Vietnam and Somalia. In fact, the Post held two commemoration events for National Vietnam Veterans Memorial Day. The first one took place at Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone, GA. It included a flag retirement ceremony, JROTC students and even their band! The second event was at the Veteran’s monument in front of the Peachtree City Hall. There, Vietnam Veterans shared their stories and placed a wreath as part of the service.

Above Veterans share their many experiences with one another as part of the commemorations & tributes activities

Finally, on 1 April 2024, the VFW Post 9949 Commander Ben Bauman, a “End of Operation Restore Hope-Somalia 1995” Veteran, led this commemoration event. The next upcoming commemorations of outstanding action dates in U.S. history are May 1 – Loyalty Day and May 8 – VE Day: German unconditional surrender signed, 1945. The public and certainly all Veterans are welcome to attend these tributes.

VFW Post 9949 Life Member Julian Velasquez salutes a wreath in front of the Peachtree City’s Veterans monument commemorating the start of the Kosovo 1999 campaign.

On March 24, 1999 US Forces entered Kosovo to help put an end to the fighting in that war-torn nation. On March 25, 2024 (25 years and 1 day later) VFW Post 9949 paid tribute to the tens of thousands of military personnel that successfully ended the conflict. Members started with a breakfast at Mimi’s Good Food in Peachtree City and then traveled to the ceremony site.
VFW Comrades above Julian Velasquez (left) and Stony Lohr (right) “fuel up” at Mimi’s Good Food Restaurant before the ceremony.

Comrade Velasquez served as the lead for this commemorative tribute. In Kosovo, he was a medical planner working with multi international forces, ensuring the best medical care possible for our soldiers. The stories and information he provided about what it took to make that operation successful were super informative and riveting.

Comrade Velasquez along with American Legionnaire and Wreaths Across America local coordinator Geralyn Daniel placed a wreath as a tribute to our military members who served in the Kosovo campaign.

Few Americans recognize the sacrifices of thousands of military members, including the loss of two Army aviator lives, as part of this complex military operation. For example, the USAF flew over 30,000 sorties in this effort. VFW Post 9949 and all Veterans that participated at this ceremony, salute those brave men and women Veterans.

Above, Veterans join in supporting the Horses and Warriors Program. This included National VFW Senior Vice Commander Al Lipphardt (center above wearing blue jacket and khaki pants).

Post Puts Veterans On Horseback

“Nothing is so good for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse,” once said Winston Churchill. This theme is validated by Veterans on Fridays at the Calvin Center in Hampton, Georgia. There Comrades of VFW Post 9949 join other Veterans in volunteering their time and effort in placing needy Veterans on the back of horses in a safe and controlled environment.

Above (left) Post Commander Ben Bauman along with Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy presents a check to Kate, the Calvin Center Equestrian Director.

Beside needing a whole support team to do the all the hard work required in running a safe and efficient stable of horses, it also takes money. The funds given to the Calvin Center’s Horses & Warriors program (like what is pictured above from 22 March 2024 by our Post) goes to supporting the supplies and equipment needed to make this program such a success. If you know of a needy Veteran who may benefit from this experience or you would like more information, contact Sara Reams 678-438-3116 or the Calvin Center office 770-946-4276. “One can get in a car and see what man has made. One must get on a horse to see what God has made.” Thank you to all Veterans and Post Comrades who make these opportunities possible for our needy Veterans.
Post members and volunteers gather for another start to the Post’s monthly VFW Veterans Visit (V3)

March’s Vet & Spouse Visits Set Record Numbers

The 21st of March saw members of VFW Post 9949, VFW Auxiliary, other Veterans and volunteers once again visit 5 local facilities that house and treat Veterans and Veteran spouses/widows. What makes March standout is the number of these fine patriots we visited. The total visits this month was 108. This includes a record of 74 Veterans and 34 spouses/widows.

Above, AL GA Post 50 Service Office John Mathias visits with two Veterans at the Arbor Terrace at Peachtree City facility

…”to assist worthy Comrades…and to assist their surviving spouses and orphans…” is part of the VFW Congressional Charter that is cited at our VFW Post at each meeting and performed the 3rd Thursday every month by our Veterans and wonderful volunteers throughout the Peachtree City, GA area. This event is open to all, please come join us. Click the “Want to Help” tab above for more information on how you can be part of the V3 team.

When the VFW Post 9949 selected this year’s Teacher of the Year, Anissa Long received an “A+” on her nomination. The Post Commander was all smiles as he congratulated her on being such a good role model and super-great teacher for our Nation’s youth at Lee Middle School here in Sharpsburg , GA. Veterans Give Hearty Sendoff To Local Deploying Unit

On Saturday 16th of March, a crowd of Veterans, family members, and well wishers gathered along the streets of Newnan, GA for a send-off of a local Army National Guard deploying unit. When the busses filled with Soldiers of B Company, 2/121 Infantry drove past, every VFW Comrade standing there had at one time shared their same feelings. Everyone salutes their courage and dedication to our country’s defense. VFW Post 9949 wishes all of them safe travels and a safe return…. and when the “Global War On Terrorism” Soldiers return, we’ll be waiting with our Nation’s gratitude along with a VFW application to join their brother and sister VFW Comrades. VFW Post 9949 Comrades join with other Veterans in paying tribute to the start of the Liberation of Kuwait -Operation Desert Storm 1991

Desert Storm Remembered

On 28 February 1991, The US Air force jets were attacking targets and US Navy ships were launching missiles. It was then that the US Army and US Marines crossed over the sand berms, and thus began Operation Desert Storm. VFW Post 9949 conducted a commemoration tribute to this historic event 33 years later (24 February 2024) in front of a F-16 fighter jet at Peachtree City’s Atlanta Regional Falcon Field airport.

Veterans gathered for the start of the tribute.

The ceremony opened with a prayer from our VFW Post 9949 Chaplain followed by laying of a wreath, history and sharing of stories of Veterans involved in that conflict.

VFW Post 9949 Chaplain Jay Flournoy led off the ceremony with an opening prayer

Life Member Boyd Collins (above right) explains to fellow Veterans the finer points of living in and operating in desert sand for months at a time.
Centered above, Life Member Mark Gelhardt Sr. shares some Desert Storm “lessons learned” vignettes with fellow Comrades.

The history and facts regarding the liberation of Kuwait, preparation and execution of Operation Desert Storm was wonderfully delivered by Jay Flournoy.

Life Member and Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy explained the background and sacrifices given by military members and their families for the liberation of Kuwait.

The National VFW headquarters ask Posts to “arrange special ceremonies” for “outstanding action dates in U.S. history” including February 28 – Liberation of Kuwait – Operation Desert Storm 1991. We thank all the Veterans who helped us accomplish this mission by attending and participating in this commemoration. General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, USA messaged his troops on the morning of 24 February 1991…..”My confidence in you is total. Our cause is just! Now you must be the thunder and lightning of Desert Storm. May God be with you, your loved ones at home, and our country.” That same love of country was displayed 33 years to the day later in front of a fighter jet monument in Peachtree City, GA.

Post Says: “Thank You For The Space And Support”

On 16 February 2024, VFW Post 9949 Buddy Poppy project led Julian Velasquez, along with Post Senior Vice Commander Rick Ford, to travel to five store locations in the Peachtree City area. Their mission was to honor and show Post appreciation to these stores in providing space and assistance during the Veterans Day Buddy Poppy donation drive.

Above Julian stands with the Kedron Village Kroger manager and team.

Providing space to handout red poppies to the public allows Post member to educate about the history and explain about today’s VFW Buddy Poppy program. This also gives the citizens an opportunity and a convenient way to donate to this worthy cause.

The funds collected last year supported everything from housing for homeless Veteran, to building a home wheelchair ramp, to providing fruit and snacks to 100 Veterans and Veteran spouses in nursing homes during our monthly visits. None of this could happen without the support of our local generous citizens and Wonderful help from our local pro veteran stores. Post 9949 salutes them and their fine teams that allow these events to happen.

Post Renders Final Salute to Comrade Walker

On 15 February 2024, VFW Post 9949 members, fellow Veterans, guests and family members gathered to show their final respects on the passing of Post member John Walker.

The above display of John’s life featured many pictures and items from his time serving in the Army. This included his original “dog tags.”

The Celebration of Life service began with “Military Honors” by a US Army Honor Guard team from Fort Moore (previously known as Fort Benning) GA. The service included presenting a US flag to the family and the playing of “Taps.”

VFW Post members form up with fellow Veterans in preparation for rendering a final salute.

Upon conclusion of the Celebration of Life service, Comrade Walker’s remains were moved between a column of Veterans that were called to attention then ordered to present arms for a slow and final salute as he passed by. As always, Post members presented a Buddy Poppy to the family, reminding them that our support to them will continue. We honor our dead by serving the living.

Above VFW Post 9949 members (left to right) Stony Lohr, Julian Vazquez , Wayne Leicher, Arnie Geiger, Jim O’Neil, Rick Ford, Jay Flournoy, John House and America Legionnaire John Matias conducted a commemoration tribute to the sinking of the USS Maine.

”Remember The Maine!”

On 15 February 1898 at 9:40 PM the USS Maine sunk in the Havana harbor off the coast of Cuba. Tragically 267 sailors lost their lives at that event. On 15 February, 2024 (126 years later) VFW Post 9949 held a commemorative tribute to that momentous occurrence.

Veterans place a “Sinking of the Maine-1898” ribbon around the flower as part of the ceremony.

The sinking of the USS Maine became a catalyst for the start of the Spanish-American War. American forces lost 2,446 lives in that war. Over 90% of the deaths were due to disease and the consumption of bad food. The lack of U.S. Government treatment and care for returning war Veterans resulted in the formation of several Veterans organizations. The eventual merging of these groups became the foundation of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (the VFW of today). The attending Veterans at this commemoration tribute ended the ceremony in a loud cry, in unison, of “Remember the Maine!” The next commemorative ceremony tribute will be for the “Liberation of Kuwait-Operation Desert Storm 1991” 28 February at 8:30 AM, Peachtree City’s Falcon Field airport. It all starts with a 7 AM breakfast at Mimi‘s. Good Food restaurant in Peachtree City. Please come join us.

Post 9949 Commemorates the Signing of the 1973 Vietnam Peace Accord

In history, January 27, 1973 marked the signing of the Vietnam Peace Accord. On 27 January 2024, VFW 9949 Comrades, Veterans, family and citizens observed this date with a commemoration ceremony at the Veterans monument located near the City Hall in Peachtree City Georgia.

Members of the community join Veterans in marking the occasion at the City’s Veterans monument.

It’s had been 51 years from when peace was declared in Vietnam. Many, many of our Veterans made tremendous sacrifices, and are still hurting from their time in that war. We owe all of them are support and great gratitude for their service that we will never forget.

THANK YOU VETERANS!

The speeches and prayers were right on target and made this commemoration really memorable. A Big Post salute goes out to all the attending Veterans and especially Wayne Leicher and Chaplain Jay Flournoy for setting this event up.

Farewell Comrade, You Will Not Be Forgotten

On 21 January 2024, Post members gather at a Celebration of Life service for fellow Post Comrade Edward Stein Jr. Ed was a retired Army Colonel. He received multiple awards over the course of Service to include our Nation’s third highest military award – the Silver Star – for his actions in Vietnam. The VFW Post 9949’s Service Officer, Chaplain and other members have gone to give support to the Stein family. This includes providing information and assistance with the final Military Honors for Comrade Stein. These honors will take place at the Arlington National Cemetery in a future date. Post members and other Veterans in attendance rendered their final salute to Comrade Stein as he was moved from the Holy Trinity Catholic Church. A Red Buddy Poppy was left behind to remind the family that our support to them will continue. Plus each Memorial Day & Veterans Day all former VFW Post 9949 members are remembered with our prayers. The Post will execute a draping of the charter ceremony in honor of Comrade Stein on 8 February during the next general membership meeting.

Freezing Temps Can’t Stop Post Comrades

Despite the wind chill in the teens and an arctic blast of wind that kept getting stronger, VFW Comrades, American Legionnaires, other Veterans and great citizens went to work on the morning of 20 January 2024. Their work? To recover and load into trucks 720 used wreaths that had adorned Veterans graves throughout the holidays.

VFW Post 9949 Commander leads from the front again. This time in loading used wreaths into trucks.

In conjunction with the Wreaths Across America local coordinator Geralyn Daniel, a team of volunteers swarmed what seemed to be the Arctic circle to complete the task of removing wreaths from the graves sites of Veterans.

The cold weather didn’t hamper the work nor the high spirits of the wonderful group of volunteers.

Post Commander Bauman was pleased that when the request for help came out that Post members answered the call.

Above, Life Member Arnie Geiger was one of seven VFW Post 9949 members that helped load used wreaths in the very cold weather.

The Post was happy once again this year, to support the Wreaths Across America program. Remembering these 720 Veterans by honoring their final resting place with beautifully adorned wreaths during the holidays, regardless of the weather, makes all Veterans’ hearts feel warm inside.

Above, VFW Post 9949 Life Member Larry Ogg, looks over the cemetery for any wreaths that still may need to be recovered.

Thank you Geralyn Danile and Wreaths Across America. We look forward to placing wreaths again on our Veterans’ grave sites in December 2024.

Post Starts The New Year By Renewing V3 Checks On Veterans

On 18 January 2024, staff at five local senior living facilities, saw the familiar brown VFW and blue VFW auxiliary hats coming through their front doors. It was time once again for the VFW Veterans Visits (V3). Where Veterans and Veteran spouses were treated to handshakes, hugs and treats. This month 64 Veterans and 25 spouses were greeted by the V3 team. Last year (2023) the Post’s V3 program had in-person Veterans contacts 779 times and the VFW AUX did the same for spouses over 300 times.

Above Comrade Arnie Geiger visits with marine Corps Veteran Jack. One of the several Veterans Arnie visited that day.

Sure many of the Veterans look forward to the treat bag (last year the Post gave out 2,334 bananas, 5,450+ pieces of candy plus Christmas fruit baskets. The VFW AUX provides the Spouses with handmade cards, flowers, Christmas ornaments, etc… and birthday cake on the Services’ birthday/founding.) each month. However, it’s the in-person “How are you doing? How can we help?” conversations that really benefits Veterans during these visits.
Comrade Ben Gross and fellow Veteran “Les,” a proud Marine, spend quality time together during these visits.

If you know of a Veteran that would benefit from the VFW Post 9949’s monthly V3 or if you would like to come help with these visits (open to all) please contact the V3 Coordinator via the “Contact Us” tab above. Next V3 will be 15 February 2024, starting at Somerby Sr. Lvn Center in Peachtree City at 1 PM.

Bagpiper begins the Celebration of Life ceremony for VFW Post 9949’s Comrade John Walker’s wife – Shelia Walker

Post Supports Our Fellow Comrade

On 16 January 2024, family, friends and Veterans gathered in Peachtree City, GA. to celebrate the life of Sheila Walker. Sheila was the wife of John Walker who is a VFW Post 9949 member. John (an Army of Occupation- Germany Veteran) and Sheila were inseparable and participated in many Veterans activities and events. Certainly one of the hardest working and dedicated member of any Post is the Post Chaplain like our Jay Flournoy. He orchestrated the event to a large in-person crowd that was also broadcasted all the way to Australia.

Post Chaplains, like Jay Flournoy pictured above, are some of the most dedicated and hardworking Comrades in supporting Veterans and their families.

Chaplain Flournoy’s words were beautifully crafted, wonderfully delivered and gave comfort to all. A Chaplain’s work is never done and he is in constant demand. A big VFW Post 9949 “Thank You” salute goes to Jay for his work with this event and all the others that he expertly presides over. Additionally, others spoke and shared wonderful happy stories about Sheila and her life with John and the family.

Above, VFW Post Sr. Vice Cmdr Rick Ford tells a joyful story about Shelia & John that he gathered from one of his multiple visits to their home.

As Sr. Vice Cmdr Ford pointed out to John and his family, that support to Veterans and their families is a cornerstone of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and it does not end today with this ceremony. Many thanks to all the Veterans who attended this event and shared their grief and offered support to Comrade John Walker and family.

January Full of Winners & History

Life Member and Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy led the Post VOD program. Jay is shown above presenting a check to one of the three student audio-essay winners.

The 11 January 2024 VFW Post 9949 general membership meeting featured meeting winners of this year’s Voice Of Democracy (VOD) and an excellent 30 minute presentation of the history of the National Infantry Museum located at Fort Moore (old Fort Benning) GA.

All 3 top VOD place winners will receive scholarship money, medals and certificates from the Post in front of their school peers. The winners are:

1st Place – Shelby W. Marosy (The Foundry School)

2nd Place – Gianna C. Neckel (The Foundry School)

3rd Place – Ryan A. Cline (The Foundry School)

Jay reaching for another medal to award; this time to Gianna for second place.

Interesting fact: all 3 VOD winners this year can from the same school! Great work and congratulations to “The Foundry School” – well done.

Above shows part of the audience that was treated to an excellent presentation given by Life Member John House (upper far right in blue).

The National Infantry Museum, has been rated as the top military museum in the nation multiple times. Not only just because of the magnificent displays and galleries but the knowledgeable staff that support this treasure found in Columbus, Georgia. A VFW Post 9949 recent transfer – John House was a member of that terrific team for many years. John gave a VERY insightful briefing on the history of this museum to guests and Post members. Great work John! The stories behind the story were awesome. All of us can’t wait to hear more.

Life Members Wayne Leicher (left) & Wayne Fowler capture every word of John House’s super informative presentation of the museum.

All the other important regular/ reoccurring Post business was also satisfied during the January meeting. Of course, one can’t start a productive Post meeting on an empty stomach. Ken Benson’s Army chow line was really terrific and answered the call.

Acting Post Commander for the meeting – Sr. Vice Cmdr Rick Ford (left) and Post Service Officer Stony Lohr inspect the food.

All members are encouraged to attend and inspect Ken Benson‘s chow at the next meeting on 8 February at 18:30 hrs. Rumor has it, there will also be some Girl Scout cookies to purchase. Be prepared to enjoy some sweet treats!

Mimi’s Continues to Support Veterans

One step into Mimi’s Good Food Restaurant (303 Kelly Drive, Peachtree City, GA) and it’s very clear that Mimi’s is a Veteran friendly establishment. Flags from every military service hang from the rafters, including America’s newest branch of Service – the US Space Force. VFW Post 9949 is extremely honored and proud that proprietor Mimi Gentallini for years has placed a VFW Buddy Poppy donation jar up front near the checkout for all to see and use. The jar, known as the “Bill Camper Buddy Poppy donation jar” (named for one of VFW Post 9949 outstanding founding members), provides free Buddy Poppies all year long. This jar also allows Mimi’s patrons a convenient way to help support local needy Veterans, due to the fact that all proceeds benefit the Veterans of Foreign Wars veterans assistance programs. VFW Post 9949 salutes and thanks Mimi’s for supporting all Veterans and their organizations.
