Post Combats Windy & Cool Temperatures With Warm Visits To Vets

21 November 2024, saw once again VFW Post 9949 members and guests fan out to five local senior living facilities and residences. There, they conducted a personal one-on-one visit to Veterans. This is the Post’s monthly VFW Veteran Visits (V3) event that is open to all volunteers. The VFW Auxiliary conducts the same activity to spouses & widows of Veterans. They receive handcrafted cards and flowers. While Veterans get a bag filled with candy and bananas, it’s the personal visit that matters to them. The next visit will be on 19 December. Visit to these Veterans starts at Somerby Senior Living Center, 200 Rockaway Rd, Peachtree City and the visit to spouses/widows starts at Legacy Ridge of PTC, 1967 W. Lanier Ave, Hwy 54, Peachtree City. Both locations start meeting at 1pm.

Life Members (L-R) Tom Rivera, Rick Ford & Wayne Leicher were “pumped” to start their visits to Veterans.

Come join us for our next V3 visit on 19 December. It’s a great way to show some holiday spirit to worthy Veterans spouses and widows. For more information contact the V3 Coordinator Rick Ford (listed in the “Contact Us” tab from the menu above).

Finally a HAPPY THANKSGIVING special salute to all the Comrades, fellow Veterans, VFW Auxiliary and volunteers that have made these V3 visits possible. We hope to see you next month.

Birthday cake celebrating the 249th founding of the United States Marine Corps

Birthdays, Awards & Auxiliary Top November Meeting

In Tun’s Tavern 249 years ago in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the United States Marine Corps was founded. At the November VFW Post 9949 Membership meeting, Comrades celebrated this occasion with cake and singing of the Marine Corps hymn. Two Post Marine Corps Vets had the honor of cutting the cake with a ceremonial saber.

Above Post USMC Veterans: Ed Ramirez Jr. (left) and Tim Tice slice the Marine Corps birthday cake.

Of course, singing the Marine Corps hymn is mandatory for a momentous occasion like this.

Post members singing the Service’s songs is a fun thing…but not always sounding in tune. 🙂

Also celebrating a birthday in November was Life Member Jim Ryan. Recon Ryan is a charter member and a major, major foundation stone that this Post has built upon since 1994. Happy 98 birthday, Jim!

Then, it was time to eat cake and celebrate the Post Chili Cookoff team’s 1st place “People’s Choice” award. Not only did the Post win a $50 check from the Calvin Center but also a cool certificate to display at the Post. Well done to the “Hot Stuff” Cookoff team.

Two members of the Chili Cookoff team (Life Members Rick Ford -left and Ric Lim-right) present Post Commander Ben Bauman (center) with 1st place “People’s Choice Award” certificate.

Also, in a significant event in Post history, VFW Auxiliary recruits gathered, filled out applications and discussed the final steps in making the VFW Post 9949 Auxiliary a reality. These pioneers will become the “charter members” of this organization.

Life Members Ken Benson (left) and John House stand with several of the future VFW Post 9949 Auxiliary members.

There is still time for anyone who is interested in becoming a “charter member” of our VFW Auxiliary. Simply click on the “VFW Post Auxiliary Tab” above for more information.

VFX Auxiliary member Christel Ford (above in red) would be happy to explain how easy it is to join our new Post auxiliary and support the Veterans of Foreign Wars in helping Veterans, their families and the community at large.

The next monthly general membership meeting will be on 12 December starting at 17:30 and will feature a ceremony for the initiation of new members

VFW Post 9949 and the VFW Auxiliary wreaths placed at Peachtree City’s Veterans monument on Veterans Day

11 November is Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada. 11 November 2024 was a fine patriotic day in Peachtree City to commemorate this day.

Joint VFW Post 9949 and American Legion Georgia Post 50 Honor Guard “posted the colors.”

The start of the ceremony hosted by Peachtree City, began with the posting of our United States flag and the colors of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion followed by the singing of the national anthem.

The VFW Post 9949 Jay Flournoy delivered the invocation to a large crowd of Veterans and citizens of the Peachtree City area. This included the city Mayor Kim Learnard, councilmen and other city and state officials.

Above pictured is a portion of the crowd that attended the Veterans Day ceremony

The audience was treated to remarks by the keynote speaker, Will Garner, who spent 26 years on active duty as a US Army officer. His dedicated service all over the world is an example of the sacrifice Veterans make every day in all branches of military service.

Above: proud Army Veteran, Will Garner provided the keynote marks.

Following the remarks, the VFW & VFW Auxiliary placed wreaths at the base of the Veterans monument in memory of all the Veterans who have served before us.

Poppies Bloom Donations For Needy Veterans

On 9 November, VFW Post 9949 members marched out to six locations in the Peachtree City, Georgia area. Once there, they set up Buddy Poppy donation stations. Post members and volunteers handed out poppies in remembrance of the Veterans Day weekend commemoration.

Above: Post Life members Wayne Folwer (left) Jim O’Neil (center) and therapy dog “Don” welcome shoppers at Kroger Kedron with a Buddy Poppy.
Above: Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy mans one of the six Buddy Poppy locations.

Poppy donations are an essential part of the Post’s Emergency Relief Fund that can only be used in direct support of needy Veterans and their families. Building handicap access ramps for Veteran’s homes, lodging for homeless Veterans, monthly supplies for visits to 100+ Veterans and their spouses- at five local nursing facilities/residences are a few examples that Buddy Poppy donations have been used by VFW Post 9949.
Post Life Member and Post “Buddy Poppy CINC” Julian Velasquez above shown putting the supplies together for each donation station.

It takes a lot of work behind-the-scenes and at the stations to make these donation drives successful. A HUGE Post salute goes out to Julian Velasquez who orchestrated this event as well as all the Post, Auxiliary and volunteer members across the state who operated the Buddy Poppy donation stations.

Many thanks also goes the wonderful locations that supported this important program: Clothes Less Traveled Kroger Braelin & Kedron, Walmart and Sam’s Club. If you missed out but would still like to help, then please click the “Want To Help And Maybe Donate” tab above. The needy Veterans and their spouses will be very grateful that you did.

Post Pavers Strike Again!

Just in time for Veterans Day, G.I. Joe Bowler’s PAVERS laid down some beautiful bricks around the Veterans Monument in Peachtree City, GA. These magnificent marble bricks are engraved with Veterans’ names, ranks and dates of service.

Above (L-R) are part of the Post Pavers “All Life Members” team: Jay Flournoy, Arnie Geiger, Joe Bowler and Larry Rosenthal.

These permanent marble bricks are a great way for family members to honor their Veterans and it’s easy to do. Just click on the “Veterans Brick Memorial” tab above on this page. There you also see more brick details and a link to the order form. Fill out the form and send it in. We’ll have the next batch of bricks installed in time for Memorial Day 2025.

The Veterans Monument with the surrounding veterans bricks are located near the Peachtree City library and City Hall, 201 Willowbend Rd, Peachtree City, GA.

The nearby city library maintains a binder that contains a map to facilitate quick location of a Veteran’s brick. Another job well done by Joe Bowler’s VFW Post 9949 Pavers…now get ready for the next batch to arrive in May 2025!

HOT! Post Chili Wins Cookoff

Great day it was on 26 October 2024 in Hampton, GA. There at the Calvin Center teams gather to produced the finest chili in the second annual fund raising chili cookoff event.

Above members of the VFW 9949 Chili Cookoff team (left to right) Veterans: Ron Locker, Rick Ford, Ric Lim and VFW Auxiliary Christel Ford

The day was full of music, hay rides, dance performance and some really great chili…and there were some beverages on hand to cool down the tastebuds.

The above was the stage for the event. The only thing hotter than the chili was the music of the band.

The Calvin Center’s Equestrian team provides unlimited happiness and care to needy Veterans that get the opportunity to ride their horses in a safe and controlled manner. Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 is proud to be a longtime supporter, including supporting this wonderful fund raising event.

Arnie Geiger was one of the several Veterans that came and supported this worthy fund raiser.

The audience was treated in sampling many, many, many outstanding chilies produced by superb participating teams.
The VFW Post 9949 team shown above handing out tasting samples.
Oh wow, this is really good!” said after tasting some VFW hot stuff.

Post Life Member and Chef Ric Lim describes his chili as starting out with an initial kick that quickly meows out into wonderful flavor. This combination worked as the chili was given the “People’s Choice Award” that came with nice certificate, check and a whole lot of bragging rights.

Above Ron Locker (left) & Ric Lim celebrate VFW Post 9949 winning the 2024 Calvin Center Chili Cookoff’s “People’s Choice” award.

Thank you Calvin Center for a fun experience and especially thank you for taking care of our Veterans. Ride on! Post Gives Tribute To Women Veterans

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 on 18 October 2024 held a commemoration for women Veterans and those currently in Military Service. The program acknowledges all of the great contributions women in military service have given to our nation from the very beginning of our country’s history. VFW Post 9949 members and attending audience were honored by remarks delivered from the keynote speaker: Brigadier General Nikki Olive (USA, Ret). We are the world’s number one military thanks to leadership from women like B.G. Olive, and all other women who have served and are currently serving in uniform.

The Post salutes a big “thank you” to BG Olive and Post Life Member Wayne Leicher for making this event truly memorable and impressive.

The weather was cool and crisp for the 19th VFW’s national action dates in U.S. history. It was also wonderful to see a fine group of lady Veterans who came to join with other women comrades for this special ceremony.

Cake for the 125th VFW Anniversary

Marking 125 Years of Service

On 10 October at the Peachtree City Veterans Center, Veterans, city officials, dignitaries and numerous guests celebrated the Veterans of Foreign Wars’ 125th anniversary of service to our nation (1899-2024). The Peachtree City’s VFW Post 9949 members celebrated this event by hosting a cookout at the Post.

Above some of the work in preparation for the celebration, which included live music, games, hamburgers, hotdogs, and tons of other food and beverages.

Being Peachtree City’s first and oldest Veterans organization it was a terrific honor that two city councilman celebrated with us by cutting the cake with a ceremonial saber.

Left- Councilman Clint Howard along with Councilman Frank Destadio (right) conduct the ceremonial “first cut” using an Army saber.

Additionally, the celebration, included awarding Coweta – Fayette County EMC, the VFW Post 9949’s “Employer of the Year- 2024” Award.

Coweta – Fayette EMC’s Jeremy Arant, Manager Member Services, receives a flag and proclamation from Post Commander Ben Bauman

Post members have long appreciated support that EMC has given this Post over many years. The 12.5 % increase in hiring Veterans last year was a terrific achievement in supporting Veterans and their families.

Post members stand for the reading of the proclamation certifying the United States flag presented to Coweta – Fayette EMC, was flown over the city of Peachtree City in recognition for being the VFW Post 9949’s “Veterans Employer of the Year-2024.”

After all the presentations and their supporting remarks were completed it was time eat that beautiful cake. Thanks to help of the VFW Auxiliary and future Auxiliary members who came up and sliced the cake into manageable portions while wielding a magnificent saber. That alone was entertaining to watch.

Post Goes VFW District Recruiting

The last two weekends of September found VFW Post 9949 members recruiting for new Comrades at two VFW District recruiting drives. The first event was for 10th GA VFW District. It was held 19-22 September at Ingram Farm Heritage Fest at Minton Farm in Woolsey GA. This antique tractor focused festival was filled with lots good old Georgia country crafts, and displays.

Pictured above is the VFW 10th District recruiting station at Minton farm.

The following week was time for the 1st District’s recruitment drive. The hurricane didn’t stop Post members from attending on Friday, 27 September and working this really enormous and impressive event.

Above (left to right) VFW GA 1st District Cmdr Dwayne Kilbourne, Post 9949 Sr. Vice Cmdr Rick Ford, GA VFW AUX Christel Ford and VFW Department of GA Adjutant General Sherron Conyers all having fun recruiting.

Besides the real tasty Fair food, the sites, sounds and animal exhibitions that comes with going to a State Fair, meeting super-great fellow VFW members is a real treat. The education and experience gained by going to these events are super valuable and will pay big dividends at other future VFW recruiting events. Besides, it’s just plain fun going to the Fair. Especially when the perfect recruiting location, supplies, and friendly coaching are all there waiting for you.

It’s fun going recruiting specially when it’s at the State Fair.

10 October 2024 VFW Post 9949 will be celebrating the 125th anniversary of VFW Years of Service.

Initiation, AF Birthday & Awards SEP Meeting Was Packed

So much was going on at the 12 September 2024, Post general membership it’s hard to fit it all in one night. Post Air Force Veterans were in a fine singing voice while singing ….”up into the wild blue yonder…” Men & Women wearing the AF Blue uniforms everywhere would be proud of the voices reverberating off the walls that night.

Post USAF Comrades: (left to right) Arnie Geiger, Tom Rivera, Garett Otterbein & Jay Flournoy- all are VFW Life Members- sing the USAF song while Jay is holding a birthday cake with 77 birthday candles blazing.

After the cutting of the USAF birthday cake, members were treated to a “preamble” presentation by John Milani on his outstanding Army military career and experiences.

Above Post member John Milani delivers a history on his Army experiences that was filled with funny stories and interesting moments.

This led to the initiation of three members officially into VFW Post 9949. The Post is significantly stronger with the addition of Comrades: Tuffy, John and Coach Ed. Welcome aboard! The Commander put the Post “at rest” which gave us time to eat some USAF birthday cake and congratulate our new members. Then the business of the Post commenced. This included all the usual voting matters, old and new business, but also a special presentation was given to the Department of Georgia’s number one Service Officer, VFW Post 9949’s very own, Life Member Stony Lohr.

10th District & Post 9949 Commander Ben Bauman presents Comrade Stony Lohr with a trophy and certificate from the department of Georgia acknowledging him as the top Service Officer in the department of Georgia.

Wreath placed at the Veteran’s Monument in tribute to the End of Operation Iraqi Freedom- 2010

Remembering Operation Iraqi Freedom

Hometown Peachtree City hero, VFW Post 9949 member and Iraqi war Veteran Christopher Wagnon stands with son Nathan saluting, while remembering the sacrifices of Veterans that fought in Iraq.

31 August 2024 marked the 14 anniversary of the End of “Operation Iraqi Freedom-2010” Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 commemorated this anniversary with prayers, laying a wreath, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, a missing man formation flyover and remarks from Iraqi war veteran and VFW Post Member Christopher Wagnon.

Part of the crowd that came to listen to words from an Iraq War Veteran and Bronze Star recipient.

Too often our daily lives become too busy and we forget the cost that our military women and men paid in service to the nation. The Iraq War totaled 4,492 killed in action and 32, 942 wounded in action. It was so fitting that United States VFW Posts around the world paid tribute to these Veterans on this day. It was also fitting and spectacular that the local Falcon RV Squadron conducted a missing man formation that was flown by two pilots of the Iraq War. This included the Flight Lead call sign: “Torque”. It was amazing to see.

Missing man formation flown by the Peachtree City’s Falcon RV Squadron at precisely 09:10hrs 31 August 2024
Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy (far left) reminded us all of the true cost that was given by the women and men who served as our nation’s warriors in the war in Iraq.

The conclusion of this commemoration was the playing of “Taps” thanks to Post Life Members Al Hogg and Arnie Geiger. We placed several more pictures of this event in the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” page.
Big appreciation for support goes out to all the Post members, community and the Pilots of the Falcon RV Squadron that participated in making this 14th anniversary event possible.

For over 130 times VFW Post 9949 Honor Guard members have preformed ‘Military Honors’ for departed Veterans and their families.

Post Honors The Dead By Serving The Living – Again.

It was a beautiful hot Georgia morning on 17 August 2024, when the VFW 9949 honor guard members started arriving at a gravesite for a fellow Veteran. It was the 133d time that the Post was called upon to provide final “Military Honors.” This time it was for Army Veteran Carl Walter, Sr.

Honor Guard members like Jay Flournoy, show up early to receive instructions and practice before the funeral ceremony.

To make the ‘Honors’ service go as professionally as possible, team members have to “walk the ground,” coordinate with family members and officials and finally- practice their tasks.

Post Honor Guard Captain Al Hogg provides last minute instructions in regards to the specifics of this ceremony.

This tradition of giving final Military Honors is something Veterans and families in the Peachtree City area have counted on from VFW Post 9949 for the last 30 years.

Above: Some of the family members that gather for the funeral and the rendering of Military Honors.

The playing of “Taps” and folding of the US Flag is a fitting reminder of the honorable service that Veterans have given to our nation.

Above Post Life Member Arnie Geiger precisely folds the flag 13 times representing the original Colonies.
Life Member Stony Lohr (centered above) renders a salute during the playing of taps.

In fitting with the VFW motto of “Honoring the dead by serving the living,” the VFW Post provides these services to the family and guests of the Veteran at no cost. The culmination of the ceremony is a presentation of the flag to the next of kin.

Above: deceased Veteran Carl Walter’s son receives the US Flag folded in a triangle in reference to the colonial soldiers’ tri-cornered hat.

The Office in charge when giving the flag states: “On behalf of the government of the United States of America, a grateful nation, through the Veterans of Foreign Wars Peachtree City Post 9949. I am honored to present you with this flag of our country, under which your Father has so honorably and faithfully served.” This honor VFW Post 9949 will proudly continually to render when asked to support our fallen fellow Veterans and their families. The Falcon RV Squadron in conjunction with the VFW Post 9949 Veterans Visit (V3), conducted a spectacular flyover of the Somerby Sr. Living Center in Peachtree City.

Planes, Friends, Vets & Spouses….What A Great V3!

It will be hard to “top” the VFW Veteran Visit (V3) that occurred on 15 Aug 2024. It seemed that the 90+ degrees hot weather brought out the best in everyone. Veterans, residence and visiting spectators, were treated to a wonderful multi ship flyover that roared above the Somerby campus. Smiles of delight, admiration, and appreciation were everywhere.

Above left: America Legion GA Post 50 member John Matias along with VFW Life Member Tom Riviera (left) enjoyed the event and comradeship along with all the fellow Veterans they visited.

Many V3 experienced team members can testify that the best visits with Veterans occur when their family, friends and neighbors are present. Nothing beats these visits when joined in by VFW members handing out bags of bananas and candy.

Army Veteran Robert shows proof that V3 visits bring smiles; especially when accompanied by a wonderful family and neighbors.

Of course ones knows that when 4 or 5 Veterans get in a group the stories will fly and the Comradeship will sail. Besides having solutions to ALL the world’s problems, these Veterans always have advice to expertly give to one another. 🙂

Above Post Life Member Ben Gross (top Left) leads an impromptu group of fellow Veterans: Andrew (top right), Nathan (bottom left) and Jack in an a friendly “discussion of the day” pose.

It’s all in fun and makes life so much more enjoyable while one peels a banana and savors delicious candy with fellow Veterans. The VFW 9949 Post always welcomes volunteers to join the experience and take part in the fun when visiting with these wonderful Veterans. We start the V3 every 3rd Thursday of the month at 1PM at the Somerby Sr. Lvn. Ctr, 300 Rockaway Road, Peachtree City, GA and breakout to 4 other facilities in the local area.

Above: VFW Auxiliary Life Member Christel Ford shares a smile and bracelet made by Veteran spouse Sarah. It’s Sarah’s way of making people happy.

The VFW Auxiliary simultaneously conducts visits to veterans spouses and widows at two of the Peachtree City facilities. They hand to each spouse/widow beautiful flowers and homemade craft cards. Finally, a special Post salute, goes out to the fine pilots of the Falcon Field RV Squadron for their expert airmenship. It looked and sounded super-great! We hope to see everyone on 19 September for our next V3.

The VFW National Convention July 27 – August 1, 2024 marked the 125th “Years of Service” giving to Veterans and our Nation. This year two Peachtree City residents (Rick Ford and his wife Christel) attended the convention.

Pictured above: VFW Auxiliary member Christel Ford and VFW Post 9949 Sr. Vice Commander and National Convention Delegate Rick Ford.

A mass of over 9,500 VFW delegates plus 4,500 VFW Auxiliary members gathered to conduct important VFW & AUX business, share experiences with one another and have a whole lotta fun.
Above is a portion of the crowd that congregated in a show of patriotism and camaraderie.

By far the best part of the convention was meeting people and including the top National and State leadership of VFW and VFW Auxiliary.

Above Post Sr. Vice Cmdr Rick Ford shown meeting the Commander-in-Chief Duane Sarmiento. 🙂 He actually did meet the CINC 10 seconds after this picture was taken.

Multiple National awards were given out to teachers, Patriots Pen essay winners, employee of the year, etc…, including the national Voice of Democracy (VOD) Patriots Pen award winner.

Above the 2024 VOD VFW National winner Sophia Lin delivered her VOD submission to a standing ovation and received a $35,000 scholarship check provided by the VFW

In addition to the award presentations, attendees were treated to memorable, speeches and presentations by a legion of our Nation’s dignitaries.

Several dignitaries like Kentucky Senator Ron Paul addressed the convention.

The VFW Auxiliary had 4,500 enthusiastic members attend this year’s convention.

In related good news, both the VFW and the VFW Auxiliary grew, for the second year in a row, in both members and Posts worldwide. Plus, in a project that took nearly 3 years to complete, our VFW Post 9949 successfully authored an amendment to the VFW National Ritual manual. Now, when the 6,000+ VFW Posts worldwide initiate new members into their Post, the US Space Force personnel will be included. The Jr. Vice Commander’s ritual instructions will now read: …”for just as long as there is a soldier, sailor, marine, airman or guardian, so long must our work continue.” Next, as part of the fun, convention goers dressed in patriotic attire and marched through the convention center grouped by states. Georgia’s large number of attendees, plus our enthusiasm, made us look good as we marched by and saluted the Commander-in-Chief.

Above: 10, 000 + members start to gather in prep for a patriotic march in show of support to the nation and our VFW CINC.

For more information and pictures of the 111th VFW National Convention please go to the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” page via the tab listed above. We hope to see you in Columbus, Ohio next year for the 112th VFW National Convention, as we celebrate 126 years of service to our Veterans and nation.

VFW Post 9949 Member Jim Fogg an author and himself featured in many books in one of the many heroes in Post 9949

A Post Full Of Heroes

At the August VFW Post General Membership meeting, held on 8 August in the Peachtree City Veterans Center, Comrades and guests were treated to a detailed narration given by USAF Vietnam Veteran Jim Fogg. Jim is an absolute hero, earning the Air Force’s Distinguish Flying Cross, as well as multiple other medals, for his service in Southeast Asia.

Above, Jim is showing the audience on the map one of the many locations where he piloted is his C-130 aircraft while leading recovery missions for downed pilots.

After socializing, eating pizza, salad and consuming beverages, Jim’s presentation was an excellent segue into the official business of the Post that evening.

Comrades above listen intently. Jim is a retired, Delta Airlines, captain who authored several books, including books on his passion for elk hunting.

Jim continues to serve his Post and fellow Veterans by being an active member of the VFW Veterans Visits (V3) Post team. Each month V3 members conduct one-on-one visits to Veterans at five care facilities throughout the Peachtree City Georgia area. Heroes like Comrade Jim Fogg can be found throughout the membership ranks of VFW Post 9949 and we are so lucky to have them live in our community and be members of our Post. The next VFW General membership meeting will be held on 12 September at the Peachtree City Veterans Center. Please use the “Contact Us” tab above in the menu box for more information on how you too can be a member of VFW Post 9949 and join the ranks of heroes.

Peachtree City Veterans and community gather to commemorate the Signing of the Korean Armistice in 1953

Post Remembers The “Forgotten War”

VFW Post 9949 Korean War Veterans take part in the “Signing of the Korean Armistice in 1953” commemorative tribute

On 27 July 2024 at the Peachtree City Veterans Monument, four Korean War Veterans came to lay a wreath. The wreath they placed had a ribbon that read: Korean Armistice 1953. For on that date 71 years earlier the official signing of the Korean Armistice took place.

Above: Life Member Arnie Geiger (far right) introduces two Korean War Veterans (Ben Gross-left and Desker Campbell-center) to speak about their experiences.

These four Veterans: Ben Gross, Desker Campbell, Al Hogg and Bud Ellis were joined by multiple members of the Post and Peachtree City community.

Life Member and Past Post Commander Bud Ellis (in red) a bomber pilot in Korea addressed the crowd on where he was on that day 71 years ago.

The laying the wreath, followed by prayers, and remarks help all of us to appreciate and not forget these Veterans’ service and their sacrifices they made for our country.
One should also not forget that this conflict is still not over. We continue to have our military forces deployed and on guard in far away Korea. They today are making sacrifices and are also extraordinary Veterans.
Centered above is Post Member Tim Trice, a proud Veteran who served on the DMZ in Korea.

Life Member Walter Donila gave a brief and exacting history of the significance of signing the armistice.

Comrades Donila (left) and Campbell (right) discuss the details of the Korean armistice signing.

Then the audience was moved by the closing of this commemoration with the playing of “Taps” by Post Life Member and Korean War Veteran Al Hogg.

VFW Post 9949 Charter Life Member Al Hogg -center blue shirt- told of his Korean experience and later played “Taps” from a bugle.

To see more pictures of this event please go to the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” page listed above. Finally the Post sends out a BIG salute to all Korean War Veterans everywhere. You are certainly not forgotten by your fellow Comrades of VFW Post 9949.

We meet at 1pm at the Somerby Senior Living Center, 300 Rockaway Road, Peachtree City, GA. No experience is required and it takes about an hour of your time. Also, the VFW Auxiliary simultaneously visits Veterans’ spouses and widows. They start their visits at Legacy Ridge of Peachtree City, 1967 W. Lanier Ave., Highway 54 Peachtree City, GA. They are always looking for volunteers to help as well. Contact the V3 coordinator listed on the “Contact Us” tab above for more information on how you can help with these visits.

11 July 2024 VFW Post 9949 General Membership meeting saw the VFW Post 9949’s Quartermaster Jim O’Neal busy counting money and writing checks. In appreciation for helping with the Wreaths Across America program (Post members helped decorate graves of Veterans with beautiful wreaths for the holidays) the local Greater Fayette County Women’s Club bestow a check to the Post. This event that is SO special, SO well organized has become a very important experience that our Post Comrades look forward to each year.

Post Scout Coordinator, Life Member Dallas reads Hannah’s award citation to the members

Scout Hannah Claiborne work on an animal rescue program was a two year project. It resulted in a Girl Scout “Gold Award”- the highest honor bestowed to a Girl Scout. Well done, Hannah, your project has helped make our community a better place to live for our animals. VFW Post 9949 renders a mighty salute to both Scout Hannah and the local Wreaths Across America team for all their good work. However, the night wasn’t without some fun filled financial controversy. Apparently, the VFW Post 9949 Kedron Kroger Buddy Poppy team, led my Arnie Geiger and Ken Benson, received the most donations from Memorial Day. The Commander did point out that the official After Action Report has yet to be released, they still went ahead to give them a certificate.

Life Member Julian Velasquez AKA “CINC Poppy” (above, center grey) reads the certificate award for the team collecting the most Buddy Poppy donations to the “apparent” winning team’s leaders pictures left above.

In good fun, some, of the Post Members cheered, applauded and congratulate the Kedron team. …just wait till next time the Buddy Poppies are being handed out…
Above Kedron team leaders and Post Life Members (left) Ken Benson and Arnie Geiger hoist the highly contested winning team certificate

The absolute winners of all this are the Veterans and their families who receive assistance directly from funds collected by these Buddy Poppy donation drives. 100% of the funds collected go to helping needy Veterans. Another salute goes to all the Post members who helped serve at six different locations and especially to the citizens of the Peachtree City community who generously donated their money and proudly wear the Buddy Poppy. More pictures of the July meeting can be found via clicking the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” tab above.

The Post hopes to see you at the next General Membership meeting on 8 August. We have two exciting guest speakers ready to talk and present stories of their time in Korea, Vietnam and even in Cuba. Also, please circle your calendar for the 27th of July. Join our VFW Post 9949 Korean War Veterans at 09:00hrs at the flag pole/Veteran’s monument (vicinity of the Peachtree city library/ City Hall) for a commemoration ceremony of the “Signing of the Korean Armistice in 1953.”

Hot Temps, Cool Bananas and Great Vets

The afternoon of 20 June 2024 was a hot one in Peachtree City. Yet the hot weather didn’t stop a formation of Post 9949 Comrades from visiting 78 Veterans at 5 facilities in Peachtree City. Dropping off a bag with bananas and candy comes with a handshake or sometimes hug, is really appreciated by many of these brave Veterans. Additionally, the VFW Auxiliary had 3 Volunteers that touched 29 spouses of Veterans at two care facilities also in Peachtree City. Those ladies received roses and patriotic cards made by caring volunteers. The auxiliary ladies met at 1pm at Legacy Ridge to chat and personally write in the cards before visiting spouses.

For this month Life Member Ben Gross (above right) delivered to Army Veterans like David, a Happy 249th Army Birthday card made by an auxiliary member, plus a piece of birthday cake along with the usual bananas & candy treat bag.
Comrade John (center) and his two sons, all Army Veterans! They appreciate the monthly visits by our VFW Post.

The monthly V3s can only be accomplished, thanks to generous donations of money and time from citizens and Veterans of Peachtree City.

The staff too appreciate and knows the important benefits of visiting Veterans that VFW Post 9949 does monthly

If you would like to support these visits or come-out and join us for the next V3, then please go to the above “Want to help and maybe donate?” tab.

Post Comrades (left to right) Tom Riviera & Julian Velasquez received their bags before setting out to visit Veterans.

The next V3 will be on 18 July 2024. We meet at Somerby Senior Living Center, 300 Rockaway Road, Peachtree City, GA at 13:00hrs (1 PM). All are welcome, the Veterans would love to see and talk to you. For more information on going on the next V3, go to the “Contact Us” page and connect with the VFW Veterans Visit (V3) Coordinator.

Before handing out treat bags for distribution, the VFW Post 9949 Senior Vice Commander Rick Ford (above) expressed his gratitude for all the great Comrades and volunteers that make this V3 program work each month for our needy Veterans.

Happy to report that Post Life Member Wayne Flower is mending well and looks great. We were happy to include him into this months V3.

Commemorating Flag Day In Peachtree City

The crack of dawn 14 June 2024 found members of VFW Post 9949 gathered at the Peachtree City’s main flag pole. Comrades were there as part of the Post’s commemoration tribute to the US flag on Flag Day.

Above is a portion of the team of Veterans that raised the flag as part of the “Reveille” morning ceremony. From left to right Comrades: Tom Rivera, Shannon Claburn, American Legionnaire John Barson, Comrades Tim Trice and Jay Flournoy.

Mission complete, the morning team then went to Mimi’s restaurant for a well deserved “Class I” breakfast. Many of the same team were joined by several others for the 17:00hrs retreat ceremony that included the folding of the enormous size US flag.

Celebrating the Army’s 249th Birthday was just one part of a packed meeting to a packed audience.

”Feed’em, Initiate’em, Entertain’em & Send’em Home”

To a full house, VFW Post 9949 conducted it’s monthly General Membership meeting on 13 June 2024. It started with a cookout, feeding 40 folks with hamburgers, hotdogs and all kinds of sides dishes (including the Sr. Vice’s famous pretzels) all thanks to Post Life Member/Post Mess SGT Ken Benson. Ken finished off the dinner with two delicious birthday cakes in honor of the Army’s 249th birthday and our nation’s flag. Wow! Those cakes were great. Especially when cut and served by the oldest and newest members of the Post.

Army Comrade Rick Lim (left) and Army Life Member Comrade Ben Gross (right) used a saber to cut the birthday cake. This came after the Post sang Happy Birthday and the Army Song.

The Post also honored Peachtree City Recreation and Special Events Coordinator Maria Puckett, who was instrumental in assisting the Post with conducting the Memorial Day ceremony with a VFW Post 9949 Certificate of Appreciation.

The audience was then given a superb presentation by Post Life Member John House on the origins of US flag and the Army birthday.

Comrade House in his historical presentation explained how the US Army‘s birthday and the US flag’s birthday both ended up on 14 June …but not the same year.

The Post also conducted an intensive VFW Auxiliary recruiting campaign. Soon this effort will lead to the establishment of the VFW Post 9949 Auxiliary! If you are interested please text VFW Aux Member Christel Ford at 770-356-2829. Also this night, four new Comrade members were Initiated into the Post. Welcome aboard Comrades: Cordis Carter, Rick Lim, Clark Verbockel and Don Gangell. Their strengths and skills will add to us greatly as we continue to grow the Post. Finally, the Commander conducted a focused general membership business meeting, ended the night and sent folks home before 20:00hrs! At the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” tab above we have posted a few more pictures of the 13 June 2024 meeting. We hope to see everyone for the big turnout on the Fourth of July as Post Comrades will march and ride in golf carts handing out flags as part of the Peachtree City Fourth of July parade.

Life Member of VFW Post 9949 Walter Donila led a D-Day commemoration ceremony at the PTC’s Veterans Monument

Post Remembers 80th D-Day Anniversary

Nations around the world and cities across our country conducted tributes to the thousands of military members who risked their lives on June 6, eighty years ago. This includes Veterans, led by VFW Post 9949 in Peachtree City.

A history of the world’s largest amphibious operation was expertly delivered by Comrade Walter Donila.

From the strategic level operational level and tactical level, Walter covered it all. The sacrifices and cost of lives were echoed by the Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy during his prayerful remarks.

Chaplain Flournoy reminded all of the high cost that was paid for victory.

Laying of wreath at the foot of the Veteran’s monument, plus a member wearing the period attire, made this commemoration absolutely on target.

Post Life member Gary Rossomme brought authentic realism to the uniform of the day for paratroopers 80 years ago

By orchestrating this event the VFW Post 9949 allowed the Veterans and citizens of Peachtree City an opportunity to learn and express their gratitude to all that participated in that historic day.

Saluting all those who came before us on the beaches of Normandy France 6 June 1944

More pictures of this D-Day tribute can be found by selecting the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” tab at the top of this page.

Did Someone Say Cookout?

The VFW Post invites all who are interested in learning about the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 and the VFW Auxiliary to come to the Peachtree City’s Veterans Center (backside of the Frederick Brown amphitheater box office) on 13 June 2024 at 17:30hrs / 5:30 PM. Bring your spouse and come hungry!

VFW Post 9949 Members joined fellow Veterans at Peachtree City’s City Hall Flag Pole & Somerby Senior Living Center in leading remembrance ceremonies in honor of Memorial Day

It Was A Memorable Memorial Day

On 25 May 2024 in Peachtree City, GA. had stormy weather in the morning and steamy sunny weather in the afternoon. None of the weather conditions could dampen the drive of local Veteran’s organizations, along with local citizens, in honoring fallen servicemen and women on this sincere occasion.

The inclement weather forced the placing of the Post wreath along with other activities inside Peachtree City’s City Hall chambers.

The program called for: prayers, live band music with singing, youth awards presentations, placing of wreaths, musket volley, bagpipe music, flyover and finally playing of taps. The lightning and strong winds plus rain forced the organizers to pack everything into City Hall. Other than the flyover, the leaders made this program complete and a major success. This was a reflection due the months of preparation by many groups: VFW Post 9949, American Legion GA Post 50, Marine Corps League, Sons of the American Revolution, Peachtree Wind Ensemble, Boy & Girl Scouts, Peachtree City’s staff and others.

Above: the packed City Hall audience listened to Thomas Fraser from Scotland on bagpipe play Amazing Grace

That afternoon, many of these same Veterans commemorated Memorial Day with a service at the Somerby Sr. Living Center in Peachtree City.

Above picture shows a portion of the team of Veterans that made sure senior residences, often with mobility issues, were able to attend and honor deceased Veterans on this Memorial Day .

Above: The Commander In Chief “CINC Buddy Poppy”, Life Member Julian Velasquez works one of the 8 VFW Buddy Poppy stations throughout the Peachtree City, GA area.

Buddy Poppies Grow Support For Veterans

25 May 2025, saw VFW Post members and volunteers at five locations, working 8 stations handing out VFW Buddy Poppies. Even though the weather was hot, with thunder storms that passed through, it failed to dampen the enthusiasm in handing out poppies and receiving donations from generous citizens.

Here Life Member Walter Donila is shown handing out a Buddy Poppy.

Educating citizens that 100% of the donations for the Buddy Poppies goes directly to support Veterans programs results in wallets and purses being opened with generous donations given.

Above: Post member Tim Tyson along with VFW Post 9949 Commander Ben Bauman’s daughter Alana Bauman help educate citizens on the meaning/purpose of the VFW’s Buddy Poppy program.

Without the support of stores like Kroger, Sam’s Club, Clothes Less Traveled, and Walmart in allowing us to set up these donation stations, this program wouldn’t be a success.

Above is one of the typical donation stations where citizens learn about the Buddy Poppy program, receive application for a Veteran’s bricks, VFW membership and other activities VFW Post 9949 conducts.
Building a handicap accessible ramp for a disabled Veteran to get in and out of his house pictured above and purchasing supplies for monthly Veterans and spouses visits pictured below below, are just two examples of what Buddy Poppy funds are used for by VFW Post 9949.

It took a lot of hard work to make this fund raiser a success. Big thanks to all the volunteers and a special salute that goes out to Julian Velasquez for his leadership over this project. Well done, Comrades! You did the Post proud.

Above VFW Auxiliary Life Member Christel Ford is just one of the many volunteers that gave of their time Saturday to work the VFW Buddy Poppy donation fund drive.
A special thanks goes to the Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy pictured above, in making sure we had a truly blessed Buddy Poppy day.
Above: VFW Post 9949 Life Member “G I Joe” Bowler, and his “Pavers,” worked to install Veteran’s recognition bricks in time for Memorial Day.

Pavers Lead The Way!

21 May 2024- One can tell that Memorial Day or Veterans’s Day is about to be commemorated in Peachtree City, by seeing members of the VFW Post 9949, led by Comrade Joe Bowler, working to install Veterans bricks at the Veterans’ Monument outside of City Hall and library. These lifetime marble memorial bricks add prestige, honor and overall appropriate ambience to this location.

Comrades (left to right) Rick Ford, Bo Hill and Arnie Geiger share in the fun of working together installing Veterans bricks.

Many fellow citizens seek meaningful and lasting ways to honor family members and friends who were Veterans who served our nation honorably. These beautiful bricks serve as a permanent and meaningful reminder of their service members whose names, branch of service and dates are inscribed on each brick.

Life Member Joe Bowler points to a row of 15 bricks that this couple (Lori & Michael McLaughlin) secured for their Veteran family members.

The importance of remembering Veterans and their service to our nation is too great to be quantified. Yet the cost their sacrifices and their story can be remembered by citizens who come, sit and marvel at the names of men and women Veterans that are marked on these stones.

Comrade Bill Werling shares history with USAF Veteran Andrew Flournoy while seated at the Veterans Monument.

If you would like a Veteran brick installed for your favorite Veteran then please click the “Veterans Brick Memorial” tab located above this page. It is easy to do and can be done from anywhere in the world.

VFW Post 9949 Life members Ben Gross(left) and Arnie Geiger (right) visited fellow Veteran Frank Stanley (USN). Simultaneously, the VFW Auxiliary visited Frank’s wife at a nearby rehabilitation center.

Did Someone Say “Comradeship?”

…”to preserve and strengthen comradeship…” This is a capital tenet found in the congressional charter of the Veterans of War. One of the many ways, VFW Post 9949 members exercise this principle is via the VFW Veterans Visits (V3) conducted monthly in the Peachtree City, GA local area.

Members of the V3 meet at Somerby Sr. Lvn Ctr and then breakout to 4 other facilities to visit Veterans each month.

Besides giving Patriotic presentations, conducting ceremonies, parades, and funeral honors, the V3 provides a unique one-on-one visit experience to grateful Veterans and spouses. This month over 100 of these visits were conducted.

New this month was a visit to Navy Veteran Marilu Puckett. Like all the visited Veterans each month, Marilu was given a treat bag of bananas & candy.

The cost of sustaining this monthly program can only happen via the support of the local generous citizens that contribute to the “Buddy Poppy” program. Be on the lookout for free “Buddy Poppies” with donation jars at stores in the Peachtree City area 25 May 2023. 100% of these donations go to support Veteran programs. The cost of time given by our Post members and volunteers in making these V3s successful is priceless. Now that’s comradeship. If you would like to help donate to this program then click the “Want to help and maybe donate” tab at the top of this page.

May Is For Poppies and Installments

The 9 May 2024 VFW Post 9949 general membership meeting featured a brief history presentation of Buddy Poppies as well as the Buddy Poppy display model. Life Member Julian Velasquez (AKA CINC Buddy Poppy) designed 7 kits each with the items shown in the picture above (each packed in a separate sealed tub) for use in the upcoming Buddy Poppy donation drive 25 May 2024. The plan is to have stations during the day located at both Peachtree City Krogers, Walmart, Clothes Less Traveled and Sam’s Club. Another major feature of the meeting was the installation of Post Officers for 2024.

Commander Ben Bauman receives the Post gavel to serve another year from past Post Commander Stony Lohr

With a slate of officers assigned and appointed for the upcoming year, it should be another wonderful year of big progress for VFW Post 9949 and its members.

Next month the Commander has directed a cookout for the Post starting at 17:30hrs, 13 June 2024. He wants everyone to bring their spouse, eat hearty, have a good time and turn-in applications for the brand new VFW POST 9949 AUXILIARY! Just think, these will be the “Charter Members” of something really great and super important to our Post, Veterans and their families plus the local community. We are really counting on seeing everyone there.

Victory In Europe!

On 8 May 2024, VFW Post 9949 members commemorated “Victory in Europe Day- 1945” also known as “VE Day.”

Life Member Bill Werling places a VE Day wreath at the Peachtree City’s Veteran’s Monument as part of the tribute for those who fought WW II in Europe, that ended in 1945.

Comrade Bill Werling gave a historical presentation of the events that led up to the final days of World War II in Europe. It was “spot on” and led to many discussions by attendees.

Above is a picture of part of the Post members who attended the VE Day tribute.

This marks the 8th out of 17 VFW Commemorative Tribute dates executed by Post members this year. Next up is the Memorial Day commemoration on 27 May 2024. It will take place at the same Veteran’s Monument in front of the Peachtree City Library, 201 Willowbend Road, Peachtree City, GA starting at 9 o’clock. All Post members and their families are strongly encouraged to attend this marvelous and grand memorial observance.

Post Members “Derby” For Veterans

VFW Post 9949 is a supporter of the “Horses & Warriors” program which is part of the Calvin Center in Hampton, GA. Placing needy Veterans suffering from all kinds of trauma on the back of a horse makes life better for these deserving Vets. The Calvin Center’s mission statement is: “Sparking growth through enriching, retreats, and outdoor adventures”. It takes lots of funding and volunteer help to make their programs worthwhile for Veterans and their families. VFW Post 9949 gives both funding and many hours of volunteer help to this worthy organization.

VFW Life members Mark Weaver (left) and Arnie Geiger (right in blue) were part of the Post members that had a great time enjoying dinner, live music and watching the horses run the KY derby.

This fundraiser was very successful and raised nearly $26,000. Thanks to all the 200+ generous people that attended. RIDE ON Calvin Center with Horses and mighty Veteran Warriors!

Post Gives Back To Community

Around the world VFW and Auxiliary members turned out on 4 May 2023 as part of the 3d annual VFW’s“Day of Service” #stillserving campaign.

Life member Comrade Wayne Fowler worked in the electronics department of Clothes Less Traveled thrift store in Peachtree City, GA.

By concentrating on Veteran-led community service projects on this day, the VFW intends to bring focus to the role Veterans play in the well-being of their community and surrounding areas.

The Clothes Less Traveled thrift store team really appreciated the volunteer help by Post members

Members helped the Clothes Less Traveled the thrift store with the sorting of clothes, preparing electronics, greeting customers as they come in the door to fixing shopping carts and more. It’s a win-win for the community. The Clothes Less Traveled organization has donated over $8 million back to the community through their sales of donated goods

VFW Auxiliary member Christel Ford (in blue) is helping sorting clothes.

It was a fun and rewarding time, with even Post Life member Chris Clarke singing storewide his favorite tunes.-AWESOME! This Day of Service shows the Peachtree City community that our Post is not only located in Peachtree City but our members and families are part of Peachtree City… a very good part. For more photos of activities at this event, please click the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” tab above. A big Post salute of “thank you” goes to Jay Flournoy and Chris Clarke for making this worthy service event happen.

Post Bids Farewell To An Outstanding Marine

On Monday 22 April 2024, the VFW Post 9949’s Chaplain Jay Flournoy led a Celebration of Life service for one of our Post’s beloved members. Life Member Jim Rogers passed away on 8 April 2024.

Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy presides over the service, providing words of comfort and sympathy to the family, friends and many Veterans in attendance

Comrade Rogers had a truly historic active duty career in the Marine Corps serving in World War II, Korea, and multiple tours in Vietnam. An active member in VFW Post 9949, Jim Rogers also served as the Grand Marshall of the Peachtree City, Fourth of July parade last year.

The VFW Auxiliary gives flowers and hugs to Veterans’ spouses/widows as part of the VFW Veterans Visits each month

April Showers Bring VFW Auxiliary Flowers To Veteran’s Spouses/Widows

On 18 April 2024, 34 spouses of Veterans residing in two local nursing facilities in Peachtree City received cards & flowers from the VFW Auxiliary plus volunteers. This is in conjunction with VFW Post 9949’s monthly VFW Veterans Visits (V3).

Above, a portion of the V3 team, having fun with Army Vet John (far left), a Veteran they visited during the April V3

During this month’s V3 Post members had one-on-one visits with 76 needy Veterans at five care facilities and two private residences. It takes a wonderful group of volunteers that step up each month along with a bite of logistics to make these visits successful.

Above members receive a part of 228 bananas plus 700 pieces of candy that make up the 76 treat bags for Veterans to handout.

The Post is very grateful to these volunteers that make this program a success. Come join us for the next V3 on 16 May 2024. We will meet at the Somerby Sr. Living Center in Peachtree City at 1 PM. All are welcome. For more information, contact the V3 Coordinator using the “Contact Us” tab above.

Post Turns 30!

Members of VFW Post 9949 and guests gathered on 11 April for a cookout to celebrate the birth of the Post, which officially took place on 14 April 1994 in Peachtree City, GA. Beside member’s wives, guests included representatives from the GA Department and VFW District 10. Best of all, three charter members, signers of the original charter were present to lead us in the celebration.

Jr. Vice Ken Benson puts on a cooking class on how to do a cookout right.

With speeches from VIPs like the VFW GA 10th District Commander Leo Ott and the GA Senior Vice Joe Couch made this a memorable occasion.
The Sr. Vice even promised to be at our 60th celebration in 30 years!

The celebration was even better when you have super food to go with it. Once again, Mess Sergeant Ken Benson, despite the traffic jams was able to come through and cook some burgers, chicken and hotdogs to perfection.

The VFW GA Sr. Vice Commander Joe Couch checks his phone before the meeting.

The VFW 9949 Post members, Veterans, Veteran’s families and the Community are glad to call Peachtree City their home.

Members gathered at one of the National Vietnam Veterans Memorial Day commemoration sites

What A Bunch Of Commemorations We Had!

Over the 2024 Easter weekend VFW Post 9949 paid tribute to Veterans of both Vietnam and Somalia. In fact, the Post held two commemoration events for National Vietnam Veterans Memorial Day. The first one took place at Sandy Creek High School in Tyrone, GA. It included a flag retirement ceremony, JROTC students and even their band! The second event was at the Veteran’s monument in front of the Peachtree City Hall. There, Vietnam Veterans shared their stories and placed a wreath as part of the service.

Above Veterans share their many experiences with one another as part of the commemorations & tributes activities

Finally, on 1 April 2024, the VFW Post 9949 Commander Ben Bauman, a “End of Operation Restore Hope-Somalia 1995” Veteran, led this commemoration event. The next upcoming commemorations of outstanding action dates in U.S. history are May 1 – Loyalty Day and May 8 – VE Day: German unconditional surrender signed, 1945. The public and certainly all Veterans are welcome to attend these tributes.

VFW Post 9949 Life Member Julian Velasquez salutes a wreath in front of the Peachtree City’s Veterans monument commemorating the start of the Kosovo 1999 campaign.

On March 24, 1999 US Forces entered Kosovo to help put an end to the fighting in that war-torn nation. On March 25, 2024 (25 years and 1 day later) VFW Post 9949 paid tribute to the tens of thousands of military personnel that successfully ended the conflict. Members started with a breakfast at Mimi’s Good Food in Peachtree City and then traveled to the ceremony site.
VFW Comrades above Julian Velasquez (left) and Stony Lohr (right) “fuel up” at Mimi’s Good Food Restaurant before the ceremony.

Comrade Velasquez served as the lead for this commemorative tribute. In Kosovo, he was a medical planner working with multi international forces, ensuring the best medical care possible for our soldiers. The stories and information he provided about what it took to make that operation successful were super informative and riveting.

Comrade Velasquez along with American Legionnaire and Wreaths Across America local coordinator Geralyn Daniel placed a wreath as a tribute to our military members who served in the Kosovo campaign.

Few Americans recognize the sacrifices of thousands of military members, including the loss of two Army aviator lives, as part of this complex military operation. For example, the USAF flew over 30,000 sorties in this effort. VFW Post 9949 and all Veterans that participated at this ceremony, salute those brave men and women Veterans.

Above, Veterans join in supporting the Horses and Warriors Program. This included National VFW Senior Vice Commander Al Lipphardt (center above wearing blue jacket and khaki pants).

Post Puts Veterans On Horseback

“Nothing is so good for the inside of a man than the outside of a horse,” once said Winston Churchill. This theme is validated by Veterans on Fridays at the Calvin Center in Hampton, Georgia. There Comrades of VFW Post 9949 join other Veterans in volunteering their time and effort in placing needy Veterans on the back of horses in a safe and controlled environment.

Above (left) Post Commander Ben Bauman along with Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy presents a check to Kate, the Calvin Center Equestrian Director.

Beside needing a whole support team to do the all the hard work required in running a safe and efficient stable of horses, it also takes money. The funds given to the Calvin Center’s Horses & Warriors program (like what is pictured above from 22 March 2024 by our Post) goes to supporting the supplies and equipment needed to make this program such a success. If you know of a needy Veteran who may benefit from this experience or you would like more information, contact Sara Reams 678-438-3116 or the Calvin Center office 770-946-4276. “One can get in a car and see what man has made. One must get on a horse to see what God has made.” Thank you to all Veterans and Post Comrades who make these opportunities possible for our needy Veterans.
Post members and volunteers gather for another start to the Post’s monthly VFW Veterans Visit (V3)

March’s Vet & Spouse Visits Set Record Numbers

The 21st of March saw members of VFW Post 9949, VFW Auxiliary, other Veterans and volunteers once again visit 5 local facilities that house and treat Veterans and Veteran spouses/widows. What makes March standout is the number of these fine patriots we visited. The total visits this month was 108. This includes a record of 74 Veterans and 34 spouses/widows.

Above, AL GA Post 50 Service Office John Mathias visits with two Veterans at the Arbor Terrace at Peachtree City facility

…”to assist worthy Comrades…and to assist their surviving spouses and orphans…” is part of the VFW Congressional Charter that is cited at our VFW Post at each meeting and performed the 3rd Thursday every month by our Veterans and wonderful volunteers throughout the Peachtree City, GA area. This event is open to all, please come join us. Click the “Want to Help” tab above for more information on how you can be part of the V3 team.
VFW Post Commander Ben Bauman presenting check to Lee Middle School teacher Anissa Long

Post’s “Teacher of the Year”

When the VFW Post 9949 selected this year’s Teacher of the Year, Anissa Long received an “A+” on her nomination. The Post Commander was all smiles as he congratulated her on being such a good role model and super-great teacher for our Nation’s youth at Lee Middle School here in Sharpsburg , GA. Well done, Anissa, and thank you again for the hard and very important work in teaching our children. All the post members of VFW Post 9949 salute you.

Veterans Give Hearty Sendoff To Local Deploying Unit

On Saturday 16th of March, a crowd of Veterans, family members, and well wishers gathered along the streets of Newnan, GA for a send-off of a local Army National Guard deploying unit. When the busses filled with Soldiers of B Company, 2/121 Infantry drove past, every VFW Comrade standing there had at one time shared their same feelings. Everyone salutes their courage and dedication to our country’s defense. VFW Post 9949 wishes all of them safe travels and a safe return…. and when the “Global War On Terrorism” Soldiers return, we’ll be waiting with our Nation’s gratitude along with a VFW application to join their brother and sister VFW Comrades. Godspeed 2/121!

VFW Post 9949 Comrades join with other Veterans in paying tribute to the start of the Liberation of Kuwait -Operation Desert Storm 1991

Desert Storm Remembered

On 28 February 1991, The US Air force jets were attacking targets and US Navy ships were launching missiles. It was then that the US Army and US Marines crossed over the sand berms, and thus began Operation Desert Storm. VFW Post 9949 conducted a commemoration tribute to this historic event 33 years later (24 February 2024) in front of a F-16 fighter jet at Peachtree City’s Atlanta Regional Falcon Field airport.

Veterans gathered for the start of the tribute.

The ceremony opened with a prayer from our VFW Post 9949 Chaplain followed by laying of a wreath, history and sharing of stories of Veterans involved in that conflict.

VFW Post 9949 Chaplain Jay Flournoy led off the ceremony with an opening prayer
VFW Post 9949 Life Member & American Legion GA Post 50 Commander Arnie Geiger (left above) along with VFW Post 9949 Commander Ben Bauman (above right) place a commemorative wreath at the foot of the F-16 jet monument.
Life Member Boyd Collins (above right) explains to fellow Veterans the finer points of living in and operating in desert sand for months at a time.
Centered above, Life Member Mark Gelhardt Sr. shares some Desert Storm “lessons learned” vignettes with fellow Comrades.

The history and facts regarding the liberation of Kuwait, preparation and execution of Operation Desert Storm was wonderfully delivered by Jay Flournoy.

Life Member and Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy explained the background and sacrifices given by military members and their families for the liberation of Kuwait.

The National VFW headquarters ask Posts to “arrange special ceremonies” for “outstanding action dates in U.S. history” including February 28 – Liberation of Kuwait – Operation Desert Storm 1991. We thank all the Veterans who helped us accomplish this mission by attending and participating in this commemoration. General H. Norman Schwarzkopf, USA messaged his troops on the morning of 24 February 1991…..”My confidence in you is total. Our cause is just! Now you must be the thunder and lightning of Desert Storm. May God be with you, your loved ones at home, and our country.” That same love of country was displayed 33 years to the day later in front of a fighter jet monument in Peachtree City, GA.

Post Says: “Thank You For The Space And Support”

On 16 February 2024, VFW Post 9949 Buddy Poppy project led Julian Velasquez, along with Post Senior Vice Commander Rick Ford, to travel to five store locations in the Peachtree City area. Their mission was to honor and show Post appreciation to these stores in providing space and assistance during the Veterans Day Buddy Poppy donation drive.

Above Julian stands with the Kedron Village Kroger manager and team.

Providing space to handout red poppies to the public allows Post member to educate about the history and explain about today’s VFW Buddy Poppy program. This also gives the citizens an opportunity and a convenient way to donate to this worthy cause.

The funds collected last year supported everything from housing for homeless Veteran, to building a home wheelchair ramp, to providing fruit and snacks to 100 Veterans and Veteran spouses in nursing homes during our monthly visits. None of this could happen without the support of our local generous citizens and Wonderful help from our local pro veteran stores. Post 9949 salutes them and their fine teams that allow these events to happen.

Post Renders Final Salute to Comrade Walker

On 15 February 2024, VFW Post 9949 members, fellow Veterans, guests and family members gathered to show their final respects on the passing of Post member John Walker.

The above display of John’s life featured many pictures and items from his time serving in the Army. This included his original “dog tags.”

The Celebration of Life service began with “Military Honors” by a US Army Honor Guard team from Fort Moore (previously known as Fort Benning) GA. The service included presenting a US flag to the family and the playing of “Taps.”

VFW Post members form up with fellow Veterans in preparation for rendering a final salute.

Upon conclusion of the Celebration of Life service, Comrade Walker’s remains were moved between a column of Veterans that were called to attention then ordered to present arms for a slow and final salute as he passed by. As always, Post members presented a Buddy Poppy to the family, reminding them that our support to them will continue. We honor our dead by serving the living.

Above VFW Post 9949 members (left to right) Stony Lohr, Julian Vazquez , Wayne Leicher, Arnie Geiger, Jim O’Neil, Rick Ford, Jay Flournoy, John House and America Legionnaire John Matias conducted a commemoration tribute to the sinking of the USS Maine.

”Remember The Maine!”

On 15 February 1898 at 9:40 PM the USS Maine sunk in the Havana harbor off the coast of Cuba. Tragically 267 sailors lost their lives at that event. On 15 February, 2024 (126 years later) VFW Post 9949 held a commemorative tribute to that momentous occurrence.

Veterans place a “Sinking of the Maine-1898” ribbon around the flower as part of the ceremony.

The sinking of the USS Maine became a catalyst for the start of the Spanish-American War. American forces lost 2,446 lives in that war. Over 90% of the deaths were due to disease and the consumption of bad food. The lack of U.S. Government treatment and care for returning war Veterans resulted in the formation of several Veterans organizations. The eventual merging of these groups became the foundation of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (the VFW of today). The attending Veterans at this commemoration tribute ended the ceremony in a loud cry, in unison, of “Remember the Maine!” The next commemorative ceremony tribute will be for the “Liberation of Kuwait-Operation Desert Storm 1991” 28 February at 8:30 AM, Peachtree City’s Falcon Field airport. It all starts with a 7 AM breakfast at Mimi‘s. Good Food restaurant in Peachtree City. Please come join us.

In history, January 27, 1973 marked the signing of the Vietnam Peace Accord. On 27 January 2024, VFW 9949 Comrades, Veterans, family and citizens observed this date with a commemoration ceremony at the Veterans monument located near the City Hall in Peachtree City Georgia.

Members of the community join Veterans in marking the occasion at the City’s Veterans monument.

It’s had been 51 years from when peace was declared in Vietnam. Many, many of our Veterans made tremendous sacrifices, and are still hurting from their time in that war. We owe all of them are support and great gratitude for their service that we will never forget.

THANK YOU VETERANS!

The speeches and prayers were right on target and made this commemoration really memorable. A Big Post salute goes out to all the attending Veterans and especially Wayne Leicher and Chaplain Jay Flournoy for setting this event up.

Freezing Temps Can’t Stop Post Comrades

Despite the wind chill in the teens and an arctic blast of wind that kept getting stronger, VFW Comrades, American Legionnaires, other Veterans and great citizens went to work on the morning of 20 January 2024. Their work? To recover and load into trucks 720 used wreaths that had adorned Veterans graves throughout the holidays.

VFW Post 9949 Commander leads from the front again. This time in loading used wreaths into trucks.

In conjunction with the Wreaths Across America local coordinator Geralyn Daniel, a team of volunteers swarmed what seemed to be the Arctic circle to complete the task of removing wreaths from the graves sites of Veterans.

The cold weather didn’t hamper the work nor the high spirits of the wonderful group of volunteers.

Post Commander Bauman was pleased that when the request for help came out that Post members answered the call.

Above, Life Member Arnie Geiger was one of seven VFW Post 9949 members that helped load used wreaths in the very cold weather.

The Post was happy once again this year, to support the Wreaths Across America program. Remembering these 720 Veterans by honoring their final resting place with beautifully adorned wreaths during the holidays, regardless of the weather, makes all Veterans’ hearts feel warm inside.

Above, VFW Post 9949 Life Member Larry Ogg, looks over the cemetery for any wreaths that still may need to be recovered.

Thank you Geralyn Danile and Wreaths Across America. We look forward to placing wreaths again on our Veterans’ grave sites in December 2024.

Post Starts The New Year By Renewing V3 Checks On Veterans

On 18 January 2024, staff at five local senior living facilities, saw the familiar brown VFW and blue VFW auxiliary hats coming through their front doors. It was time once again for the VFW Veterans Visits (V3). Where Veterans and Veteran spouses were treated to handshakes, hugs and treats. This month 64 Veterans and 25 spouses were greeted by the V3 team. Last year (2023) the Post’s V3 program had in-person Veterans contacts 779 times and the VFW AUX did the same for spouses over 300 times.

Above Comrade Arnie Geiger visits with marine Corps Veteran Jack. One of the several Veterans Arnie visited that day.

Sure many of the Veterans look forward to the treat bag (last year the Post gave out 2,334 bananas, 5,450+ pieces of candy plus Christmas fruit baskets. The VFW AUX provides the Spouses with handmade cards, flowers, Christmas ornaments, etc… and birthday cake on the Services’ birthday/founding.) each month. However, it’s the in-person “How are you doing? How can we help?” conversations that really benefits Veterans during these visits.
Comrade Ben Gross and fellow Veteran “Les,” a proud Marine, spend quality time together during these visits.

If you know of a Veteran that would benefit from the VFW Post 9949’s monthly V3 or if you would like to come help with these visits (open to all) please contact the V3 Coordinator via the “Contact Us” tab above. Next V3 will be 15 February 2024, starting at Somerby Sr. Lvn Center in Peachtree City at 1 PM.

Post Supports Our Fellow Comrade

On 16 January 2024, family, friends and Veterans gathered in Peachtree City, GA. to celebrate the life of Sheila Walker. Sheila was the wife of John Walker who is a VFW Post 9949 member. John (an Army of Occupation- Germany Veteran) and Sheila were inseparable and participated in many Veterans activities and events. Certainly one of the hardest working and dedicated member of any Post is the Post Chaplain like our Jay Flournoy. He orchestrated the event to a large in-person crowd that was also broadcasted all the way to Australia.

Post Chaplains, like Jay Flournoy pictured above, are some of the most dedicated and hardworking Comrades in supporting Veterans and their families.

Chaplain Flournoy’s words were beautifully crafted, wonderfully delivered and gave comfort to all. A Chaplain’s work is never done and he is in constant demand. A big VFW Post 9949 “Thank You” salute goes to Jay for his work with this event and all the others that he expertly presides over. Additionally, others spoke and shared wonderful happy stories about Sheila and her life with John and the family.

Above, VFW Post Sr. Vice Cmdr Rick Ford tells a joyful story about Shelia & John that he gathered from one of his multiple visits to their home.

As Sr. Vice Cmdr Ford pointed out to John and his family, that support to Veterans and their families is a cornerstone of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and it does not end today with this ceremony. Many thanks to all the Veterans who attended this event and shared their grief and offered support to Comrade John Walker and family.

January Full of Winners & History

Life Member and Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy led the Post VOD program. Jay is shown above presenting a check to one of the three student audio-essay winners.

The 11 January 2024 VFW Post 9949 general membership meeting featured meeting winners of this year’s Voice Of Democracy (VOD) and an excellent 30 minute presentation of the history of the National Infantry Museum located at Fort Moore (old Fort Benning) GA.

All 3 top VOD place winners will receive scholarship money, medals and certificates from the Post in front of their school peers. The winners are:

1st Place – Shelby W. Marosy (The Foundry School)

2nd Place – Gianna C. Neckel (The Foundry School)

3rd Place – Ryan A. Cline (The Foundry School)

Jay reaching for another medal to award; this time to Gianna for second place.

Interesting fact: all 3 VOD winners this year can from the same school! Great work and congratulations to “The Foundry School” – well done.

Above shows part of the audience that was treated to an excellent presentation given by Life Member John House (upper far right in blue).

The National Infantry Museum, has been rated as the top military museum in the nation multiple times. Not only just because of the magnificent displays and galleries but the knowledgeable staff that support this treasure found in Columbus, Georgia. A VFW Post 9949 recent transfer – John House was a member of that terrific team for many years. John gave a VERY insightful briefing on the history of this museum to guests and Post members. Great work John! The stories behind the story were awesome. All of us can’t wait to hear more.

Life Members Wayne Leicher (left) & Wayne Fowler capture every word of John House’s super informative presentation of the museum.

All the other important regular/ reoccurring Post business was also satisfied during the January meeting. Of course, one can’t start a productive Post meeting on an empty stomach. Ken Benson’s Army chow line was really terrific and answered the call.

Acting Post Commander for the meeting – Sr. Vice Cmdr Rick Ford (left) and Post Service Officer Stony Lohr inspect the food.

All members are encouraged to attend and inspect Ken Benson‘s chow at the next meeting on 8 February at 18:30 hrs. Rumor has it, there will also be some Girl Scout cookies to purchase. Be prepared to enjoy some sweet treats!

Post Comrades Celebrate Christmas By Visiting Veterans

On 21 December 2023, a platoon of VFW Post 9949 Comrades descended on 5 local Senior Living facilities and local homes just like Santa Claus landing on rooftops. The reason for this highly coordinated VFW Post maneuver was to distribute 75 Christmas fruit baskets to veterans, spouses/widows throughout the local Peachtree City, GA area.

Comrades Wayne Leicher (above) and Rick Ford (below) show off the prepositioned stocks of fruit baskets to be distributed.

The ability to reach the needy Veterans & widows with these beautiful Christmas fruit baskets could not have happened without the generosity of monetary donations by the Peachtree City area citizens. Thank you everyone that contributed! If you would also like to donate to our programs please click on the “Want to Help?” tab above. Of course, the logistics of putting this together would not have mattered if it wasn’t for the Post members, volunteers, including “Don” a super wonderful certified therapy dog to do the work in handing out and visiting all of these needy veterans & spouses/widows.

Don” is pictured above, loaded with baskets and is ready to visit some Vets!

Per Don: “Today I got to help Puppy Mom & Dad deliver 15 big baskets of fruit and other goodies from the VFW to Veterans at three of the assisted living, memory care, and rehabilitation facilities in our town. I love to visit Veterans! – Dapper Don, Therapy Dog xoxox”

Besides “Don”, others like VFW Life Member Wayne Fowler (pictured above) also love helping Santa by visiting Veterans too.

Giving these Christmas gifts was a wonderful experience. The focus on visiting Veterans, spouses/widows and offering assistance is conducted monthly by this Post and VFW Auxiliary members.

Above, Veteran David (left) was happy to talk to VFW Post Life Member Arnie Geiger (center) and American Legion GA Post 50 Service Officer John Matias Seiyu (right) during the December V3.

For more pictures of this holiday V3, click on the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” tab above. Again, a big THANK YOU to everyone that made this wonderful V3 holiday experience possible….and from VFW Post 9949: “Merry Christmas to all and to all, a very Veteran’s good night.”

Post Members Support And Salutes Veterans With Wreaths

16 December 2023 saw a cold but bright sunny day in Fayetteville, GA. One also witnessed hundreds of Veterans, family members and citizens who came out to decorate the graves of Veterans at the Fayetteville Camp Memorial Cemetery as part of the National Wreaths Across America Day.

Above is some of the crowd gathered as part of the wreath laying event.

In support of this nationwide remembrance, several members of VFW Post 9949 helped in making this a complete and wonderful wreath laying event.

Pictured above is a portion of the group of VFW Post 9949 Comrades that participated (Left to Right) Stony Lohr, Wayne Leicher, Rick Ford & Walter Donila

The ceremony was all encompassing, with speeches, music (singing & playing of taps), laying of wreaths for each Military Service, Fly Over plus the finale of laying 100s of wreaths on Veterans graves.

Above VFW Post 9949 Life Members (Left) MG Jay Flournoy USAF Ret. and (right) BG Mark Gelhardt Sr. USA Ret. prepare to lay a wreath for their respective Service.

A tremendous salute must go out to Geralyn Daniel and all her volunteers with the Wreaths Across America program, whose hard work made this event possible. For more pictures of this amazing ceremony click on the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” tab above.

Post Commander Ben Bauman conducts an initiation of Comrade John House at the December Post general membership meeting.

Initiating Christmas

On 14 December 2023, with Christmas carols playing everywhere, VFW Post 9949 members still took the time to conduct important business for our Veterans and local community. This included the initiation and awarding of the VFW Maltese Cross to comrade John House. Other items of importance were the continuation of the Post raising food donations for needs of food banks in the local area. The Commander reminded everyone that each month, if able to, please bring in a food donation to the Post’s general membership meeting. Also, it was discussed the success of many of the Post nominations for Patriots Pen, Voice of Democracy and Teachers Awards. Stay tuned, more to follow as these nominations continue to move up the awards chain. Further, it should be noted that during this meeting Garett Otterbein quickly and enthusiastically (if one recalls correctly) jumped at the chance to serve as administrator of the Post’s Facebook site. 🙂 We believe he said ..”after flying fighter jets with only one engine, updating our Facebook account should be super easy.” Good luck with that Comrade Garett. After many other business matters of serving Veterans, the Commander and his staff concluded the meeting by wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and we look forward to seeing all the Post Comrades at the next general membership meeting 11 January 2024 at 18:30 hrs (6:30pm).

Santa with Mrs. Claus along with VFW Post 9949’s Elf Stony Lohr (who is also the Service Officer) gather donations for the Christmas season.

More Post donations in time for the Christmas season

Two photos (above & below) are from the 9 & 10 December 2023 Santa event at Fire Station 81 In Peachtree City.  Mrs. Claus really liked Stony’s homemade hot apple cider.  93 children (plus parents & relatives) and 4 dogs were present during this event on 10 December. Per elf Stony: “A good number of the children became more attached to Sparky the Fire Dog than they did to Santa. They would come back to him multiple times to hug him.  The Firefighter in the photo above is Firefighter/Paramedic Karen Corsetti.  Commander Ben Bauman and I delivered the 64 pounds of food from the December Santa event.”

The Post also supports via a monetary donation.

Members of American Legion Post 105 Fayetteville, GA raised a 48 star US flag in a Pearl Harbor Day remembrance ceremony.

Veterans Remember Pearl Harbor Day

December 7th, 2023 was a bright and crisp morning in Fayetteville, Georgia. Legionnaires of American Legion Georgia Post 105 led the local community in remembering Pearl Harbor day. Important and beautiful speeches, music and prayers marked this solemn event, the culmination of which was the raising of the United States 48 star flag. It was the same design flag that our military fought under during the attack at Pearl Harbor on the morning of December 7, 1941. Post 105’s Commander David Niebes and his fine staff executed this remembrance ceremony with dignity and class for all Veterans and citizens, who attended.

Above American Legion GA Post 50 Commander David Niebes provided remarks on the importance of this day.

All Veterans, including the Comrades of VFW Post 9949 that were present, understand and appreciate the sacrifices that were given by the World War II Veterans on that fateful day.

Above is a few of the VFW Post 9949 Comrades that were present for the ceremony. (Left to right) Walter Donila, Gary Rossomme, Wayne Fowler, Rick Ford and Thomas Rivera.

VFW Post 9949 salutes all the fellow Veterans that made this fine remembrance happen. Please click the “Recent Extra Pictures of Activities” tab above to see more photos of this event.

Post Elves Donate Hundreds Pounds of Food!

Post Commander Ben Bauman and Adjutant Stony Lohr of VFW Post 9949 donated 200 lbs of food that were collected from VFW Post 9949 members to the Real Life Center food bank on Dec 6th 2023. The food was collected by VFW Post 9949 over the last 3 months as part of their ongoing food drive to help Veterans and Families in the Fayette County community. Great job Comrade Elves. We look forward to more food donations at the upcoming 14 December 2023 general membership meeting.

Veterans Party-in the Holiday Season. Above is the ceremonial cake that was inscribed with “Happy Holidays all Veterans” in icing.

Veterans Holiday Season Celebration

The 2d of December in Peachtree City, GA saw Veterans and their guests celebrate the holiday season with music, dancing, presentations, cake cutting, silent auction and a super dinner buffet. The Peachtree City American Legion Post 50 once again sponsored these event for Veterans who attended from all over the state of Georgia.

Above is part of the crowd that attended the celebration. VFW Post 9949 Commander Ben Bauman is centered above in an outlandish green Christmas sweater.

A special treat was the cutting of the cake by the youngest and oldest attending Veterans both wielding full length cavalry sabers!

Veteran Ben Gross (holding the saber above on the left) a member of both VFW 9949 and American Legion GA Post 50, served as the oldest attending Veteran at 93 years old.

Many thanks goes to the leaders of American Legion GA Post 50 for putting on this Holiday party of all local area Peachtree City Veterans and their guests each year.

Above American Legion GA Post 50 Commander Arnie Geiger, who is also a Life Member of VFW Post 9949, his leadership lead to another terrific holiday party.

Very big thank you to Arnie and his staff for all the work that made this happen. We can’t wait to buy our tickets for next year’s party.

Above VFW Post 9949 Life Member Dallas Wurst attended Veterans Day ceremony at Flat Rock Middle School

Flat Rock Middle School says “Thank You Veterans!”

9 November 2023 – In showing support for Veterans and in conjunction with Veterans Day activities, Peachtree City’s Flat Rock Middle School orchestrated a wonderful patriotic celebration. The celebration included the Air Force JROTC saber arch with escort of some 30 Veterans to the front row. The school band played the National Anthem along with a melody of military and patriotic songs. They were joined by the chorus who sang a beautiful rendition of “America, the Beautiful.” The guest speaker was Mrs Ray Presley-King. She, a former Captain and helicopter pilot, brought true meaning to celebrating Veterans Day. Thanks goes to Post Comrades: Dallas Wurst, Arnie Geiger and Leigh Blood who were able to attend this event. A very special thank you goes to Amanda Ferguson and the whole team at Flat Rock Middle School for making this outstanding celebration. All the Veterans of VFW Post 9949 salute you.

.

Buddy Poppying in the Rain.

While 11 November 2023 will be remembered by some folks for being rainy, windy and cold, VFW Post 9949 Comrades will remember it for the generosity shared by the citizens of the Peachtree City area in supporting Veterans. The Post had nearly 30 wet Comrades working at five separate locations in the Peachtree City area. It might have been the rain, the fact that it was Veterans Day or citizens who felt sorry for the soaked VFW Post Members handing out the Poppies. The resulting support was truly awesome.

Above, VFW Post 9949 Life Member and former Post Service Officer Steve Barela worked the Buddy Poppy donation table despite the rain

Then again, maybe the news of the Post building wheelchair ramps, visiting over 100 Veterans and Veteran’s spouses/widows in five locations monthly with treats, hugs and handshakes, providing medical equipment like walkers/wheel chairs or the spending funds to house a homeless Veteran. Whatever the catalyst, their wallets and purses flew open with stunning donations. Of course these contributions would not have happened without the support of the businesses and organization that allowed us to be at their location. Thank you: Kroger (both Peachtree City locations), Walmart, Sam’s Club and Clothes Less Traveled. The Buddy Poppy Relief Funds can only be used to directly support the needs of veterans. If you would like to help with donations or many other Veteran support activities, click the “Want to Help?” tab at the top of this page.

VFW Post Life Member a WWII, Korea and Vietnam Veteran Jim Rogers discusses health care matters with Medicare Coach Cindy Clonts

Healthcare and Semper Fi Birthday were features of the November Post meeting

9 November 2023. With the weather turning colder and cold/flu season upon us, it was fitting to hear information on healthcare programs while being warmed from burning birthday candles.

Cindy answers members questions regarding the intricate pathways of MEDICARE A,B, C, D and TRICARE options

Providing education on many subjects is one of the many services this Post provides to its members and the community at large. This was followed by the singing of the Marine Corps hymn by all the Post members. It felt like we were “from the halls of Montezuma” when that was done. That led to another “hit” delivered by Jr. Vice Commander (who is also our Post Mess Sergeant) Ken Benson when he brought out his USMC Birthday cake creation. It was complete with lighted birthday candles. Sadly, the Fire Marshal wouldn’t let Ken light up all 248 candles for marking the US Marine Corps’s birthday.

The above USMC birthday chocolate cake, which was cut by the Post’s Marine Corps Comrades, was inscribed in blood red icing: “Semper Fi!”

Veterans please come join the fun at the next Post meetings 14 December 2023 at 6:30pm.

The Peachtree City community and VFW Post 9949 Comrades gathers to say Good bye to Post Life Member Bill Griffith.

A “Gathering” for Comrade William Bowen Griffith

On Veterans Day’s evening (11 November 2023) the community of Peachtree City, Georgia gathered at Mimi’s Good Food restaurant to remember and share stories of departed Comrade William (Bill) B. Griffith, family stories, live music & songs (including bag pipes) plus super-great Mimi’s food, was shared to a packed house. One of the highlights that Bill, a former Army Combat Engineer, would have liked was a Combat Engineer toast read by fellow Combat Engineer and VFW Post 9949 Commander Ben Bauman. “Essayon!” – Let us try!

Left in red shirt, Commander Bauman prepares to deliver the Combat Engineer toast.

Members of the community & VFW Post 9949, like Life Member Wayne Donila (left), join in a toast of Combat Engineer Officer Bill Griffith.
More toasting.
Essayon!

A special thanks goes to Mimi and her team in making this “gathering” happen (Mimi’s Good Food, 303 Kelly Drive, Peachtree City, GA. 30269). It was a special night and truly fitting for a beloved husband, father, soldier and friend. The wife Barb and all the Griffith relatives, are a truly wonderful patriotic and loving family.

A larger group gathered at Somerby‘s Senior Living Center for a veterans appreciation breakfast

Somerby Treats Vets to Breakfast

What a great start to the 7 November day as Somerby Senior Living Center treated Veterans and their guest to a free appreciation breakfast. This is one the many THANK YOUs that Veterans throughout the Peachtree City community received in appreciation of Veterans Day.

Left to right American Legion Member Clint Holland, VFW Life members: Stony Lohr, Julian Velasquez and Wayne Fowler enjoyed the breakfast provided for Veterans.

While Somerby is home to nearly 50 Veterans and their families they shared their appreciation breakfast, with all veterans of the Peachtree City community.

Left to right VFW Life Members John House, Past Commander Bud Ellis and far right Post Chaplain Jay Flournoy are just some the Vets that eat a hearty meal that morning.
Thank you Somerby for the super food and your support to all Veterans.
A special thanks goes to Somerby’s Cory Gambardella (seated center above) who was the author in creating this fine event.

(Left to Right) Post “Pavers” members: Bo Hill, Wayne Fowler, Arnie Geiger, Joe Bowler, Rick Ford, Walter Donila & Jay Flournoy installed bricks at the Peachtree City Veterans’ monument.

Pavers Honor Veterans

Life Members Joe Bowler led his group of Post volunteers (the “Pavers”) at the PTC Veterans’ monument on a beautiful 25 October 2023 fall day to install 17 Veteran memorial bricks. This could be a near record number for a single installation event. These individually engraved bricks with the names, dates of service, locations, ranks, etc…, honors each Veteran for their dedication to the defense of our nation.

Life member Walter Donila orders the bricks for proper installation.

The checkerboard pattern may appear randomly placed but detailed preparation and planning goes into the design.

Above VFW Post 9949 Comrades discuss with family members the desired outcome for placement of their Veteran’s brick.

With a plan in place, it’s time for the team to dig and pave.

Life Member Joe Bowler (above) directs and records the placement of each brick.

With over 1,000 bricks installed, the recording of the location of every Veteran’s brick is a herculean task. Thanks to Life Member Joe Bowler’s documentation and help from Post Life Member Charles Thonen, family members can go to the PTC Library, pickup a reference book and map the location of their Veteran’s brick for use in future visits.
Post member: Walter (left) Wayne (center) and Jay (right) work to get the bricks perfectly set.
In what is probably a record, Lori and her husband Michael have purchased 10 memorial bricks for their Veteran relatives and family members. They now own a whole row!
Sue is pictured above a newly installed brick in honor of her Navy Vietnam Veteran husband Edward.

For more information on how to purchase a brick for yourself, family member or a Veteran you want to honor please click the “Veterans Brick Memorial” tab at the top of this page.

VFW Post 9949 members attended the GA State Department VFW Fall Conference

Post Members Attend Fall Conference

Past Post Commander and current Adjutant Stoney Lohr and Senior Vice Commander Rick Ford attended the GA Department VFW conference in Macon, GA on 21 October 2023. This provided Post members the opportunity to interface with VFW State and District leaders while discussing the latest way forward in VFW initiatives. A plus to this event was meeting the Past VFW national Commander Tim Borland.

State and National VFW leaders (State Commander Patsey Schreiber center left, Past National Commander Tim Borland center right) awarded several District & Post Commanders with awards.

Our VFW Post was called out for being one of top Posts in recruiting new members in the State. This conference was packed helpful information.

Above attending Comrades get the latest information and Officer reports on a wide range of topics.

A theme that was repeated quite often was that we are a VFW family. The members of the state and district are here to help Posts and any manners they may find necessary.

State Adjutant Tony Dobbins addresses the audience and offers his assistance. He even gave out his cell phone number!

The State Adjutant requested that we disseminate Fall conference information to all our Post members. Stony and Rick will share what they learned with Post members at the next general meeting on 9 November.

Biggest V3 Ever!

On 19 October 2023, Peachtree City saw the largest group of volunteers ever assembled by VFW Post 9949 for the monthly VFW Veteran Visits (V3). A near Army of 21 volunteers conducted in-person contacts with 66 Veterans and 29 Veterans’ widows and spouses. This V3 started with the distributing to two new Post members their “official” VFW brown membership cap.

Having fun is all part of the V3. Above right- new Life Member Garrett Otterbein gets some good natured harassment from fellow Post members upon recovering his VFW cap.

It was great that USAF Veteran Garrett Otterbein got his cap but the Army couldn’t be out done…See below:

VFW Post new member Army Veteran Bill Selke dons his VFW Cap. This MP knows how to properly wear it with Army pride!

With VFW hats issued, it was time for the visits. The focused attention this month was on the 248th US Navy’s birthday. Each treat bag given to 19 USN Veterans contained a small birthday cake and a home made card made by a VFW Auxiliary member. It read: “13 October 1775, Happy Birthday Navy! 248 Years of freedom on the seas thanks to Sailors like you. – VFW Post 9949”

USMC Veteran Les (center) enjoyed talking to Post Life Members Wayne Leicher(left) and Garett Otterbein (right). Next month, Marine, you will be getting birthday cake too.

The spouses also were part of the fun, as 29 got called upon by two VFW Auxiliary ladies. Seeing to their care is another aspect of the VFW’s commitment to Veterans and their families.
Visiting Veteran spouses is an important and enjoyable part of the monthly V3 visits. Above VFW Auxiliary Life Member Christel Ford shares happy memories with USAF Veteran spouse Mariam.
All are invited to come join us at the next V3, 16 November. You will meet some super Veterans like Army Veteran David (above left) and many VFW Post 9949 volunteers like Garett (right). The V3 makes everyone’s day so much better.

For information on being part of the next visit, contact the VFW Post 9949 V3 Coordinator by clicking the “Contact Us” tab above.

Left to right: VFW Post 9949 member Rick Ford, VFW GA State Commander Patsey Schriber and GA VFW Auxiliary member Christel Ford worked recruiting at the GA National Fair 15 October 2023.

Recruiting at the Fair

It’s always fun to go to the fair and even more so when one works to recruit Veterans into the VFW! When the GA State VFW Department posted an opportunity to help with VFW recruiting at the GA National State Fair, Perry, GA two VFW members (pictured above) from Peachtree City signed-up to serve. “It was an really honor and pleasure to meet and work with some really great fellow VFW Comrades. Including the present and past GA State VFW Commanders,” said VFW Post 9949 Sr. Vice Commander Rick Ford.

VFW Member Rick Ford (left) and GA State past Commander Dean Rakoskie (right) stand STRONG for VFW recruiting.

One of the many attractions at any good State Fair is FAIR FOOD and this super-great fair was no exception. This is especially true when one eats a scrumptious steak sandwich made by Comrades and Auxiliary members of the VFW Post 6126 from Perry, GA.

Some of the yummiest food at the fair could be founded at this trailer location thanks to VFW Post 6126.
The nice accommodations were matched by the friendliness of the Perry VFW Post members.

The team was happy to report that several new members were recruited into the VFW. Including Post member Rick Ford accredited for one new VFW member and Auxiliary member Christel Ford successfully recruited a new Auxiliary member as a well. The whole recruiting operation is well organized and makes for a fun and productive time for all the volunteers who work the recruiting booth.

Above is part of the wonderful recruiting team that served at the GA National State Fair.

It’s highly recommended that if the offer to “work recruiting at the Fair” comes around next year, that Post 9949 members signup for a shift. You are guaranteed to meet some wonderful people and have an enjoyable time for a very important cause.

Unfortunately Comrade Ford (right) was unable to get a DD-214 from the pictured (above left) potential applicant …but he’ll keep trying to get one more recruit into the VFW!

Commander Bauman (left) along with Post Adjutant Lohr (right) conducts the October Post general membership meeting.

Food, Spouses and Guests Marked the October Meeting

Starting with a yummy cookout, the 12 October VFW Post 9949 General membership meeting had multiple guests in attendance to help partake in this scrumptious activity. The Post was honored with the presence of the State Auxiliary President Pat Dobbins and her staff.

The Auxiliary team gave a briefing on the importance of an Auxiliary to a VFW Post. They also addressed the requirements for establishment, membership eligibility and costs associated with Auxiliary membership.

The team emphasized their willingness to support Post 9949 in going forward in creating a VFW Post 9949 Auxiliary.

Also above attending the meeting were VFW Spouses and speakers from the Wreaths across America organization.

Cory Gambardella from Somerby Senior Living Center invited all Post members to a free Veterans’ breakfast at 08:30 on 7 November, 300 Rockaway Road, Peachtree City. It will be held at the first big building as one comes into the Somerby complex. The Wreaths across America ladies (Cathy & Geralyn) explained their program, listed upcoming activities that they would like volunteers to help with. Plus the arrival of the mobile education display Wednesday November 1st at the Fayette Administration complex. It will be a cool thing to see and experience. This led to regular Post business emphasizing the need to support and sign up for the upcoming 11 November Buddy Poppy donation drive. All Post members are super highly encouraged, if you haven’t already signed up, to contact the Post Buddy Poppy Coordinator Julian Velasquez, 678-364-8312 or email: ibsmax2@duck.com. Please signup for one of the many open slots. Veterans need our support and 100% of Buddy Poppy donations go to needy Veterans. Please help on Veteran’s’ Day 11 November.

Attending Post Comrades hear the plea for their needed support with the Buddy Poppy donation drive on 11 November.
The VFW Post 9949’s Honor Guard provides “Military Honors” to departed Veterans though-out the Peachtree City area.

Honor Guard Team Answers The Call

On 7 and 8 October, the Post Honor Guard team performed Military Honors at two funerals for Veterans. The noteworthiness of honoring Veterans who served our Nation is of ultimate importance to Comrades of our Post and members of its Honor Guard Team. This ceremony requires precision and strict adherence to military prescribed protocols.

Above is the Honor Guard team executing the detailed folding of the flag.

While the team receives no cheers or applause from those attending at these dignified events; it is the respect and showing of proper honors for their fellow departed Veteran that motivates this squad.

A family member receives a folded United States flag given on behave of a grateful nation.

Here We Go Again, Another V3

The third Thursday of each month one will find VFW Post 9949 Veterans marching the hallways in eight buildings at five separate senior living/care facilities in Peachtree City, GA. On 21 September 2023, sixty-six Veterans got a visit from our V3 team. Plus, at two locations, thirty-one Veterans spouses also got a visit from the VFW Auxiliary. Also helping in this effort were three additional non-VFW volunteers that chipped-in. It’s a whole team of volunteer heroes to make this event happen each month.

VFW Life Member Arnie Geiger (left) puts a smile on each Veteran, like Curtis above, that he visits.

We invite everyone to come join the V3 team, give out a bag containing a few bananas and candy and help put a smile on the faces of Veterans you meet.

City Marks POW-MIA Day With Remembrance Event

On 16 September 2023 the Nation and citizens of Peachtree City GA, remembered our country’s lost -but never forgotten- POW-MIA Veterans. Led by Legionaries of the local American Legion GA Post 50, city officials, Veterans and citizens listened to speeches dedicated to the preserving the promise to bring all our Service Members home.

AL Post Commander Arnie Geiger, who is also a VFW Post 9949 Life Member, lead the City POW-MIA proceeding.

Several dignitaries including the city Mayor, Councilmen, retired General Officer and Veterans from all Services attend this significant and honorable occasion.

The Peachtree City Mayor enjoys a moment of conversation with Veterans.

The gathered group of attendees understood that we must not forget the sacrifices these POW-MIA Comrades are still making and the suffering they are still enduring for us and our way of life. They must remain alive in our minds and hearts until we know they have returned home to their loved ones or have been called to the bosom of Our Heavenly Father. We must continue to give moral support to their families who continue to suffer along with them. For more pictures of this event click here: Recent Activities

Food, Initiation, Remembrance & Volunteering Marks September’s Meeting

When Post Commander Ben Bauman gaveled the 14 September meeting to a close the Post collected pounds of food donations, listen to a presentation on how to be a hospice volunteer, remembered a fallen Comrade and welcomed six new members into the Post.

The Brightmoore Hospice team of Tiffany Virdin and Dana Samples  talked to Post members about the opportunity to be a volunteer to meet with Veterans who are in their last stages of life.
Post members draped the Post Charter and said prayer for Post Life Member Daniel Nungesser
Post members conducted prayers for Dan.

The Post Commander, Ben Bauman, was thrilled to welcome new members to the Post.

New members recite the VFW Member’s obligation pledge while touching the American flag.

The Comander announce that VFW Post 9949 was 1st in the nation for Posts of our category in membership. At 104.5 percent. He stated we need 3 more new members to achieve 107% by 31 December to help qualify the Post for All State honors and the incentive bonus funds from the State.

New members allow the Post to achieve success in many categories.

Come on Comrades, ask your friends and neighbors to join our team…together we can make this happen. Besides the many items of normal business attend to, the Commander reminded all members that the 12 October meeting will begin with a cookout for members and their spouses. Comrade Christoper Wagnon is coordinating this event. Standby for emails on how you can contribute to this fun happening. Another lively moment came when the Post members celebrated the USAF’s 76th birthday. Singing the Air-force’s song and eating cake made the night special.

Singing the Air Force song made the Post’s walls rattle and ears ring- yet the smiles were everywhere. Well done, by all our Comrades from the Air Force blue team- “Aim High!”

Post “Ramps-Up” Support for Vet

During a recent VFW Veterans Visit (V3) to Veterans and spouses in local nursing homes, VFW Auxiliary member Christel Ford was asked for help. The family was hoping for assistant with home care for Edward, a US Navy Veteran. That started a process that VFW Post members took to action. The family was put in contact with the Post Service Officer Stony Lohr, who met with the Veteran, validated the need and assessed how the Post could support. Installing a ramp was paramount in helping wife Ludie getting Edward to his medical treatments.

Getting USN Vet Edward up and down these stairs to go to medical treatment was a BIG issue for wife Ludie

Life Member Arnie Gieger talked a local construction company to take this task on with free labor!

Wife Ludie happily stands with the crew (L-R) Dave Gottardi, Arnie Geiger & Jay Christensen. Jay’s company name is: Dove Construction 678-621-3724. This company did all the work at no cost.

The funding for the building supplies came from the Post’s Emergency Relief account, sourced by “Buddy Poppies” donations. Supporting Veterans and their families in need is pillar of VFW Post 9949. Come join our team. Use the “Contact Us” and “Want to Help?” tabs above for more information.

Post Wants Your Cans

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9949 this year began a monthly food drive to support the local Fayette County Food Bank and Pantries. At each meeting Post members bring one or more food item to be donated. This month we had 31 members attend our Post meeting and 39 food items were donated totaling 36 pounds of food. This one of our Post activities which we used to do annually, but now have turned into a monthly continuous effort. Our donations for the upcoming year will be rotated among the Fayette County food Banks/Pantries (Real Life Center, Fayette Samaritans, City Bridges Food Pantry-PTC).

VFW Post 9949 Master Chef & Mess SGT Daddy extraordinaire: Ken Benson did his magic at the Post cookout.

August is about FOOD!

The Post general membership meeting on 10 August 2023, was kicked off with our ‘first ever’ cookout for Post members. A new grill (assembled by Post Life Member Wayne Leicher) allowed Life Member Ken Benson to dazzle all the Post members with his culinary skills.

Life Members Leigh Blood (left) and Ben Gross are sampling the cookout chow.

The Post is planning to invite Spouses, with members, to a cookout right before the 12 October 2023 general membership meeting.

In conjunction with the 10 August cookout, the Post Commander Ben Bauman orchestrated a food donation campaign for a local food bank. All Post members are now asked to bring a canned item to each Post meeting throughout the year.

Commander Ben Bauman (left), Chaplain Jay Flournoy (center) and Adjutant Stony Lohr (right) stand in front of some of the food donations given by Post members.

The meeting’s ‘preamble” was given by Life Member Pete Fritts. He extolled the members of his Vietnam experiences dealing with enemy tunnels, barbers and mortars while being an MP Company Commander.

Before the general membership meeting, Life Member Pete Fritts explained how proud and happy he was to bring all 253 of his Soldiers back home.

On 29 July 2023 Peachtree City sponsored a recognition ceremony and breakfast for Purple Heart Combat Veterans, their families and guests. Peachtree City (PTC) is proud of its Veterans and is designated & recognized as a “Purple Heart City.”

A cake awaited cutting as part of the PTC sponsored Purple Heart Recognition Day breakfast.

The day’s event started with the raising flags to full staff led by the American Legion GA Post 50 Commander Arnie Geiger and his staff.

Super large training hall was packed for the VFW GA Leadership Training on 5 August in Macon, GA.

Post Leaders Get GLTed!

Author Seth Godwin said, “Leadership is the art of giving people a platform for spreading ideas that work.” The Georgia Leadership Training (GLT) session conducted by the VFW GA State leadership team members served as a perfect platform for spreading ideas that worked. The VFW Post 9949 leadership consisting of: Commander Ben Bauman, Sr. Vice Rick Ford, Quartermaster Jim O’Neil and Adjutant Stony Lohr consumed abundance of information that will help the Post not only grow but also serve Veterans, their families and Post members better.

The beautiful VFW Post 9709 home, including its own lake, hosted the GTL. The training program was so packed of important information, regrettably the Post team had no time for fishing.
The GA VFW Auxiliary State team above was preparing to also conduct GLT training for VFW AUX members. They too were packed full with attendees.

Now armed…being GLTed, the VFW Post 9949 leadership team is ready and working hard to lead our Post to another successful ALL – State year!

Above are displays of appreciation, awards and features found at Post 9709
VFW Post 9949 members cookout is planned for 10 August, 18:00hrs at the Post location.

“FIRE IN THE HOLE!” COOKOUT

VFW Post 9949 members will be treated to a cookout behind the Post headquarters on 10 August. The Post Mess Sergeant Ken Benson will have burgers and dogs cooked to perfection. So far the Commander Ben Bauman is supplying the burgers, Sr. Vice Rick Ford is furnishing beef hotdogs and Jr. Vice Ken Benson is whipping up some of his famous potato salad & coleslaw. That “Mess Daddy” says he is even zapping up some dessert. Oh yea, the Chief can cook! So fellow Comrades come hungry and bring a side dish if you want. Chaplain Jay Flournoy will conduct a “blessing of the buns, let’s eat” prayer starting at 18:00 / 6 PM. We hope to see all our Comrades in the chow-line and then attend the follow on August Post general membership meeting.

VFW Post 9949 Life Member Arnie Geiger conducts visit with fellow Veteran during July’s V3.

Poppies Blooms Grow Bananas!

The VFW Post 9949’s July’s VFW Veterans Visits (V3) once again was a wonderful event. It may seem that stopping by and talking to a few Vets is a simple task but its not. For our Post’s V3s there is a lot of prep work that happens way before the first team members knocks on the door and says: “Hello Veteran, how you doing?” The beginning of the process starts with the little humble red Buddy Poppy. Donation drives conducted by this Post twice a year fund programs that directly support Veterans, like buying materials (including bananas) for the once a month V3 program.

Buddy Poppies donations make purchasing of bananas possible.

Of course the Post must stretch every donated dollars as far a possible.

It’s important to get the best price on every item.

Next comes the coordination with facilities where Veterans live. The importance of having a close working relationship with facility staff members allow the Post to plan on when and how many Veterans they can visit. We are super fortunate in the Peachtree City area to have supporting staff members who care deeply for the Veterans in their care.

Left to right: Jr. Vice Ken Benson, Director of Lifestyles Katie Schmoling and Post Commander Ben Bauman coordinate the details of upcoming V3s.

From administrative matters, dietary concerns, room locations to transportation needs, it takes a lot of coordination to make this go right. Only then can the bagging process start. Sure, the bags of bananas and candy treats are a big hit, but it’s the one-on-one visit with the Veteran that outlasts the treats and is the most important part.

60+ bags labeled and ready for filling to serve 4 local care facilities where Veterans live.

The preparation work required in taking care of Veterans all becomes worth it when you see their smiling appreciation. And we should never forget the dedicated V3 team members who give their time to visit Veterans. Come join us at the next V3, August 17, and see for yourself. Contact the V3 Coordinator on the contact page for more information.

VFW Post 9949 Life Members Jim O’Neil and Al Hogg practice folding the flag.

Practice Make Perfect Honors

One of the most important moment and anyone’s life is having to say goodbye to a family member, loved one, friend and fellow Veteran. For Veterans a ceremony know as “Military Honors” is often given. This entails the folding and rendering of the United States flag to a family member, playing of taps and executing a final salute. To make this transpire with dignity and proper military décor for the Veteran and attending family members, can only happen with practice and more practice by members of the Honor Guard team.

Family and friends gathered for Military Honors for a deceased Veteran.

Perfection is the rule. There are no retakes when giving these Military Honors. VFW Post 9949 is proud for the 124 times we have executed Military Honors for fellow Veterans at no charge to any families. “Honoring the dead by serving the living” is a canon of the VFW and our organization. The Post makes this happen by consent training of many members that make up the Post “Honor Guard” team.

Above are 3 members (left to right: Arnie Geiger, Al Hogg & Jim O’Neil) of the Honor Guard team that performed Military Honors to perfection on 15 July 2023

Families desiring Military Honors to be performed for their departed Veteran should contact their servicing Funeral Director with their request. The reassignment ceremony of a departed Veteran, to one of God’s Veteran honor formations, will continue to be executed by members of this Post to perfection. Thanks to constant practice. Post Sr. Vice Rick Ford gives Post Commander Ben Bauman a congratulations hand grenade gift (a glass shaped hand grenade filled with hot sauce) for leading VFW Post 9949 to be in the top 50 VFW Posts in the nation.

Post Explodes with New Members

The 13 July 2023 VFW Post 9949 general membership meeting started off with a preamble of military experiences by Life Member Chris Clark. Chris opened the eyes for many a Comrade attending by educating us on how the Army’s only active duty Military History Detachment functions. As the Commander, Chris got to see up close all types of missions and events, including his own combat experiences in Haiti.

Post Life Member Chris Clark educated fellow Comrades on the missions of his Military History Detachment .
At the formal business meeting, Commander Bauman announced that the Post finished 33 in the Nation for top VFW Posts. The staff joked that his constant upping the membership recruitment numbers was a hard challenge. This led the team to present the Commander a glass filled with hot sauce, hand grenade looking jar for their appreciation. Bauman said if you set high expectations, these folks will make it happen. The letter from National to Post Commander Bauman read: “Dear Commander, On behalf of Commander-in-Chief Tim Borland, I would like to congratulate you on earning the esteemed status of All-American Post Commander. The Membership Department is honored to administer this prestigious award from the National Membership Program. By earning this elite award, you have demonstrated to others how important membership is to the continued success of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of the U.S. Your hard work and dedication have earned you several All-American Commanders awards.” To add to that theme, the Post added 5 new members at the July meeting: Life Member ROBERT S. PRUIKSMA, New Member EDWARD J. STEIN, Life Members WILLIAM B. GRIFFITH, DANIEL T. NUNGESSER & LARRY OGG. The Post is truly exploding in growth and success.

Grand Marshall and VFW Post 9949 Member Jim Roger leads the Peachtree City 4th of July parade

Post Out Front!

The 2023 4th of July parade in Peachtree City was super special for VFW Post 9949 and the thousands who attended the event. Not only did this mark the 247th birthday of our nation and the 27th year VFW Post 9949 participated, but leading the celebration this year was our WWII, Korean and multiple Vietnam tours, 94 year old USMC Veteran Jim Rogers. Peachtree City resident Jim and his wife Luann are a proud 25 year active duty military retired family. Jim’s wartime assignments took him from China (WWII), and Korea (including the frozen Chosin Reservoir) as well as multiple deployments to South Vietnam. Post members provide a treat bag of bananas & candy to each Veteran at 4 local facilities each month. It happens with Buddy Poppy donated funds.

Much More Than Bananas and Candy

The Post’s VFW Veterans Visit (V3) program is so much more than dropping off bags of treats to Veterans living in nursing homes. True, the Vets do love these gifts, but it’s the visit that’s the most important aspect. The source of funding these gifts comes from heroic Post 9949 Veterans who spend 4 hour shifts throughout the Peachtree City area as part of the VFW Bobby Poppy donation program. This happens twice a year (around Memorial Day & Veterans’ Day). Funds donated by citizens are strictly tied to supporting Veteran programs – like buying supplies for the V3s. However, it is the one-on-one contacts by V3 members with visited Veterans that enable the Post to focus the attention and resources as needed. To make this work, it requires a team of dedicate Post 9949 members that give their time monthly in executing these personal Veteran contacts.

Pictured above is part of the 15 June 2023 V3 Heroes that volunteered and contacted 60 Veterans at 4 nursing home facilities. Post Supports Eagle Quest

Boy Scouts of America Eagle Scout Troop 181 candidate Alex receives support from two local Veteran organizations for his Eagle Scout project. Thanks to the efforts of VFW Life Member Dallas Wurst, VFW Post 9949 has a very long history of supporting local boy and girl scouting programs. Investing in our youth secures strong future leaders for America. This event was especially sweet, as Alex’s project will directly benefit multiple Veteran organizations that use the Peachtree City’s Veterans Center.

VFW member Rick Ford thanks Alex for designing an eagle project that includes wheelchair access for Veterans.

On 13 June, 2023 both Veterans Posts provided partial funding for two uniquely designed picnic tables. Allowing all Veterans members access to outdoor seating regardless of their physical ability will be a major addition to the Peachtree City’s Veterans Center. Good luck Alex, with your project. We Veterans look forward to when your Eagle project is complete and has landed in Peachtree City.

Buddy Poppies Bloom all over Peachtree City

On 27 May 2023, VFW Post 9949 Commander Ben Gross led his Comrades in staffing seven Buddy Poppy donation posts throughout Peachtree City, GA. The sun was shining, the wind was blowing and blooming “Buddy Poppies” went flying into the hands of local residents. Educating the public on the meaning behind the wearing of red poppies, the history of the poem “In Flanders Fields” and how University of GA Professor Moina Michael made wearing the red poppy internationally popular are major aspects of this event. Talking with Veterans and interacting with the general pubic are also pluses for our Post members. Donations collected are strictly tied for use only in direct support of Veteran assistance programs. THANK YOU Peachtree City for awesome support with this Memorial Day Buddy Poppy fund raiser.

Post Supports Armed Forces

The 20th of May 2023 was a extremely busy time in Peachtree City, GA. Yet it was not too busy for VFW Post 9949 to take time to honor all the uniformed men & women on Armed Forces Day. Comrade Pete Fritts (a 25th Infantry Division Vietnam War Veterans) led an audience of Veterans and residents at Legacy Ridge at Peachtree City, a senior living facility, in marking this national observance. According to Pete: “It was truly ‘My Pleasure’…as they say at Chick-fil-a! The veterans and widows of other veterans were  truly an inspiration for me.

Above is a portioned of the residences that participated in the Armed Forces observance.

Each one of those in attendance participated in our verbal discussions and our      question and answer sessions.” Well done Comrade! Delivering many of these activities/ observances to the homes of Veterans and spouses of Veterans that are challenged in traveling is a Post 9949 competency.

USAF Veteran Diane is visited by Post Life Member Ben Gross during recent V3 Visit

It Takes A Post To Ensure “Every Veteran Counts.”

Post 9949’s VFW Veterans Visits (V3) actively works to answer the VFW Commander-In-Chief Timothy Borland’s call that “Every Veteran Counts.” Local Veterans are visited in their homes, apartments, rehabilitation centers, nursing facilities, memory care centers and more. This cannot be handled by a single person, In fact, it takes a “Post of members” to make this happen though out the year.

Above is part of the members of the V3 team that visits Veterans monthly.

On 18 May 2023, 63 local Veterans and 27 Veteran Spouses (visited by the VFW Auxiliary) knew that they “count” due to the helpful members of the VFW Post 9949. Click here Https://vfw9949.org/?page_id=347 to see more pictures of the recent visit. Post Supports Scouting at May Membership Meeting

VFW Post 9949 as been a supporter of Scouting for 15 Years. Post support includes providing honors, certificates and monetary awards to selected scout winners. This year the honor goes to scout Noah Rudny. Noah’s Eagle Scout project was creating pictographic signs that are used by verbally challenged students. It helps them to communicate with teachers, adults and other students by simply pointing to one of the many figures displayed on the signs.

WWII, Korea & Vietnam Veteran Jim Rogers told everyone he was very impressed with Noah and his Eagle Scout project.

V3ers Receive Big Thanks

VFW Post 9949 plus VFW Auxiliary executed another successful “VFW Veterans Visit” (V3) program on 20 April 2023 to four local nursing and senior living facilities in the Peachtree City, GA. The V3 team had 67 personal contacts with Veterans, while the Auxiliary met with 27 Veteran spouses. These monthly visits are only made possible thanks to volunteers that come out and spend the time meeting with the Veterans & spouses. In conjunction with “Happy National Volunteer Week 2023” and in appreciation to all volunteers that visit residences of “Legacy Ridge at Peachtree City” their staff held a special “Happy Hour” for volunteer groups and individuals. This included music, dancing, beverages, certificates and thank you gifts. Even “Don” who is a certified therapy dog, received a bag of treats. It means a lot knowing that volunteers and their work is appreciated. THANK YOU Legacy Ridge! Click here to see more pictures of this event: Https://vfw9949.org/?page_id=347

Memorial Day 29 May 2023

Comrade Bill Werling (seated right) gave the preamble on his Signal Corps experiences in South Vietnam

April Meeting Starts Off With Bill “Replaces World’s Largest Fly Swatter with Dish”

Before the commencement of the 13 April 2023 Post 9949 general membership meeting, members were treated to an information/update briefing by Peachtree City’s City Manager Robert (Bob) Curnow.

The City Manager discussed a wide range of areas where the city is focused on now and future. He stressed the need to share information and hear feedback from all groups and individuals.

His briefing served as part of this information exchange process.

Next, the preamble to the Post general membership meeting was delivered by “Coach” Bill Werling. Bill enthralled fellow Post comrades with tales of replacing and setting up huge signal antennas (which look like giant fly swatters and dishes) along beautiful beaches in Vietnam. That, plus the many, many other locations he served in South Vietnam brought back multitudes of shared memories by attending fellow Vietnam Veterans. Also at this meeting Commander Ben Bauman led the Post in covering topics like the upcoming four 29 May 2023 Memorial Day events at: Somerby Sr. Living Center, Fayetteville’s Patriot Park, Senoia Cemetery and Peachtree City’s City Hall location. He further urged support for the American Legion GA Post 50’s All American 5k/10k Walk/Run on 20 May 2023 in Peachtree City. The Commander then conducted the election of new Post 9949 officers and Post’s District, State and National delegates. Next, Commander Bauman thanked Post members for their recruiting work in meeting the Post’s goal for new membership. Our challenging leader then increased Post’s membership goal and asked all members to go out and find more qualified Vets to join the growing Post 9949 team. Other topics included: new brick orders/application, upcoming monthly VFW Veterans Visit (V3) on 20 April (start location Somerby Sr. Living Center at 1 PM), finance reports, Buddy Poppy donation drive on 27 May, providing honors to the VFW National Home, plus many other matters, The next Post general membership meeting will be 11 May. Come around 6 pm for some of Ken Benson’s prepared snacks!

Veteran Walter Keiser enjoyed being visited by Don the therapy dog each month

Honoring Our Veterans

On March 18, 2023 two VFW Post members (Stony Lohr and Rick Ford) attended a Celebration of Life ceremony for Veteran Walter Keiser (June 27, 1947 – March 2, 2023). Walter was a combat Veteran who served as a crew chief on MEDEVAC helicopters during the Vietnam War. Comrade Rick Ford coordinates visits to nearly 70 Veterans at four nursing homes each month. Thanks to VFW Post 9949 Comrade Jim O’Neal along with Sue Norwood, often these Veterans (besides receiving a bag with bananas & candy plus some hugs) get treated to a big happy greeting by “Don” a trained therapy dog. Veteran Keiser enjoyed these visits especially the interaction with Don. Comrade Stony Lohr says he tries to attend all funerals of local Veterans he can. It is a way of showing honor to a Comrade who has now passed to a new and better posting. These Veterans join the multitude of many fellow Comrades that now stand in God’s Honor Guard formation. Stony who has been a bulwark of supporting Veterans and their families for many, many years as VFW Post 9949’s Commander plus Service Officer. He epitomizes the highest calling of the VFW, whose motto “honoring the dead by serving the living” is performed near daily by this Post 9949 member. This Peachtree City VFW Post is a growing organization that can always use additional members in supporting Veterans and their family members throughout the Fayette County, GA local area. VFW and American Legion Posts Team-Up For Another V3 Victory.

17 March 2023 marked another St. Patrick’s Day in Peachtree City, GA and another successful VFW Veterans Visit (V3) to local Veterans and their spouses. This month the V3 was supported by members of American Legion Post GA 50 and their American Legion Post GA 50 Auxiliary. Auxiliary members Liz Geiger, Lucy Cuevas, along with Sue Stanton and Christel Ford, visited 27 Veterans’ spouses at two local retirement home locations. Homemade St. Patrick’s Day cards -that included a gold coin (filled with chocolate) plus flowers were delivered to the spouses. More importantly, all this came with hugs and time spent making this day special. “It was so wonderful to have the added help today. I was able to relax and take time to really visit the spouses to check on their needs.” said Christel Ford of the VFW AUX.

VFW Post 9949’s sharply dressed V3 team member Wayne Fowler and fellow Comrades visit veterans monthly.

The VFW team of volunteer heroes: Pete Fritts, Jay Flournoy, Wayne Leicher, Wayne Fowler, Rick Ford, Sue Norwood and “Don” a therapy dog, saw 63 Veterans at four facilities.

“Don” is always a hit with every Veteran he meets.

Accompanying this team was American Legion GA Post 50’s Veteran Service Officer John Matias. John said “I heard about the VFW Post’s V3 and I want to see how it works. It was wonderful experience. They help a lot of Veterans.” The VFW Post 9949 V3 team looks forward to visiting our local Veterans again on April 20. Commander Ben Bauman instructs new members as part of the VFW’s initiation ritual at the beginning of March 9th general membership meeting.

March meetings honors passing of members and initiation of new members into the Post.

The March general membership meeting of VFW Post 9949 was filled with business and multiple proceedings. The first event was the meeting itself at a new location. Now located in the back-half of the Fredrick Brown Amphitheater’s box office building in Peachtree City, GA. The new site provides wonderful accommodations and finally a spot to place the Post charter. What better way to break-in the new location but by initiating new Post members? The induction of six members into the Post’s ranks included two brand new Life Members: Jim Churchill and Mark Weaver.

Sr. Vice Commander Mark Gelhardt Sr, (far left) stands next to Jim Churchill, Mark Weaver, Holly Killebrew and Julian Velasquez

While the agenda was stuffed, the Post still took time to honor (with the VFW’s Draping of the Charter ceremony) the passing of two of our members: Bill Camper and Bud Parent.

VFW Post 9949’s Charter is draped for 30 days in honor of the passing of two of its members.

Other business included Memorial Day events planning, Department Mid-Winter debriefing and nominations for Post 9949 Officers for 2023-2024. Donations to Support 4 Veteran Organizations

7 March 2023- Peachtree City- The local Greater Fayette Women’s Club has a long tradition in providing support to local organizations in the greater Fayette County, GA. area. This also includes the activity of placing wreaths on Veteran’s graves as part of the Wreaths Across America program. As a result of that hard work, the Women Club became able to give proceeds to four local Veterans organizations (two American Legion Posts and two VFW Posts). Each of which received a $265 check to support their Post’s missions. Senior Vice Commander Gelhardt and the other three Post Commanders thanked the ladies for their generous donations. VFW Post 9949 looks forward to supporting the Wreaths Across America program upcoming later this year.

Another V3 and Another Increase In Vets Visited

17 February 2023 marked another post-COVID record for the number of Veterans (69) that VFW Post 9949 members visited at four local heath facilities. The VFW Veterans Visit (V3) program can only happen thanks to a super committed group of Post members. They generously give up their time to make these visits so special. This month it was a team compromised of members: Stony Lohr, Jay Flournoy, Ken Benson, Jim O’Neil, Wayne Leicher, Gordie Tushek, Rick Ford, Ben Gross and Carl Hood. True Comrades to each Veteran they visit. The one-to-one contacts go way beyond the bag of bananas and candy they leave behind. Again this month the VFW Auxiliary teamed up to visit 23 spouses of Veterans. This time the VFW Aux enriched the visit to spouses by providing flowers and Valentine balloons.

VFW AUX member Christel Ford (L to R), Don the therapy dog, Post member Jim O’Neal and Sue Norwood team up to visit Veterans and their spouses.

$100s Awarded to Local Students

VFW Post 9949 has a long history of providing scholarship money to local students competing in several VFW programs. On 26 & 27 January, one of these programs, Patriot’s Pen, the Post awarded money to 4 deserving middle school students from two local schools; Rising Star Middle School and Crossroads Christian School. Sophia Sturgis was the overall $200 winner. Also, from Rising Star were two runners up. Ella Wyler and Henry Garcia both receiving $100 scholarship

The Rising Star Winners

Nathan Tai, from Crossroads Christian School, was also a $100 runner up award winner. The competition was extreme, as these winners completed against students from schools all across Fayette County, GA.

Nathan receives congratulations and rewards for his Patriots Pen essay entry

Many thanks to the school staffs that make this very successful VFW program work year after year.

Comrade Bill Werling works with many school officials throughout the local area.

John Walker takes the Initiation oath

Another New Member

On 28 January, Post Commander Ben Bauman along with Comrade Rick Ford conducted a VFW Initiation Ceremony for the Post 9949’s newest member John Walker. Comrade Walker brings a wealth of experiences that will serve this Post well. A former US Army Sgt(T), John said he took all the courses the Army offered and that paid off greatly through-out his life. This “Army of Occupation – Germany” Veteran was lucky enough to serve the same time as Elvis Presley while stationed in Germany. He even got to see Elvis perform a concert for the troops! A proud Quartermaster logistician, Comrade Walker recalls the endless number trains of supplies that he shepherded to the thousands of our soldiers standing on guard against possible attacks from the Soviet Red Army right across the border. It was a proud moment for all when John donned his VFW hat for the first time.

Post Commander Ben Bauman (pictured right) responds to the District’s call for help with tornado cleanup in Griffen GA.

Post Helps With Tornado Recovery

21 January 2023, VFW Post 9948 responded to VFW District 10’s request for tornado recovery assistance. VFW Post 8480 in Griffin, Georgia was hit by the recent tornado that destroyed a swath of land through the city.

Post 8480 was severely wounded

The disaster response nonprofit organization, called Team Rubicon, deployed to Griffin to assist in the recovery operations this past week. This organization is made up of all volunteer (not paid) Military Veterans that are trained in disaster response. Nineteen members of Team Rubicon were in Griffin to help.

Team Rubicon to the rescue

VFW Post’s 9949 Commander assisted members of VFW Post 8480 in their clean up Saturday, 21 January. Significant damage to the Post Home occurred as well as to their property. Saturday’s focus was on clearance of trees and debris from the road, parking areas, and surrounding grounds.

Trees down at Post 8480

Post 8480’s Commander and Quartermaster were there with others. Team Rubicon personnel are amazing and well trained.  The Post 8480 Quartermaster’s house was completely destroyed by the tornado. It should be noted that the US Flag and Flag pole survived the tornado, although the Flag was shredded it is still flying.

Flags still flies at Post 8480!

Another V3 Complete

19 January 2023 was a beautiful sunny 70 degree weather day in Peachtree City, GA. The great weather didn’t keep six VFW Post 9949 and two VFW Auxiliary members away from visiting Veterans and Veteran’s spouses/wives. As part of the Post’s VFW Veterans Visit (V3) program, teams spread out to four different facilities around Peachtree City. When the January V3 was complete 89 Veterans and spouses/wives felt the caring hands of Post 9949 members. While providing treats and flowers are appreciated, it’s the “visit” and hearing the needs of these Veterans and spouses/wives each month that make the V3 program such powerful tools in serving the ones in need. The next V3 will take place 16 February. Contact the V3 Coordinator Rick Ford (see contact page) for information on how you can join us for the next VFW Veterans Visit. THANK YOU V3 TEAM: Jay, Ken, Jim, Dee, Julian, Christel, Wayne and Rick.

New location of VFW Post 9949

POST IS MOVING IN MARCH

At the January general membership meeting Sr. Vice Commander Mark Gelhardt proposed that VFW Post 9949 (commencing March 2023), move to a new location in Peachtree City, GA. This motion was seconded by Comrade Rick Ford and was approved unanimously by attending members. Thanks to the generosity of the owner (a USMC Veteran) the current location has served VFW Post 9949 admirably for many years. However, the current location is being sold and has forced the move. With overwhelmingly generous and unanimous members support, fellow Veterans of Peachtree City’s American Legion Lyle-Brewster Post 50 voted to extend an invitation for VFW Post 9949 to meet at their meeting location (backside of the Fredrick Brown Amphitheater’s box office, 201 McIntosh Trail, Peachtree City, GA 30269).

The “Fred’s” box office

The first VFW Post 9949 meeting at the new location will be Thursday, 9 March 2023 (Social 6:30, Preamble at 6:50 and General Membership Meeting starting at 7pm). Please share this information to all that this may concern and also give big THANK YOU to all our bothers and sisters Veterans of American Legion GA Post 50.

Post Commander Ben Bauman addresses the Post

ALL-AMERICAN AGAIN!

12 January 2023- Post Commander Ben Bauman announced to members of VFW Post 9949 that it appears that for the second year in a row the Post will meet the requirements for VFW’s “All-American” designation. The rigorous requirements include standards in: Veterans Military Service, Voice of Democracy, Patriot’s Pen, Teachers Award, Membership, Recruiting Events, Community Service, and Buddy Poppy programs. The official announcement from higher headquarters won’t happen until the later in the year but that didn’t stop Post members cheering and applauding during this general membership meeting upon hearing the news. The Commander thanked all the Post members for all their work in making this prestigious VFW designation happen. He reminded members that our tasks are not done. There are many Veterans that still need our help, VFW programs to continue to be worked and additional goals to meet. Also, that evening, during the Post’s “preamble” presentation, Comrade Ben Gross gave a stirring talk regarding his experiences in Korea.

December 2022 ends with a Bang!

When the VFW Post 9949 Commander Ben Bauman gaveled the last regular business meeting of 2022, to a close (8 December), VFW Post 9949 had added several new Comrades to the ranks. This markets the fourth consecutive month that the Post marked an increase in membership. Significantly, December’s meeting included adding two brand new Life Members, Pete Fritts, a Vietnam Veteran and Julian Velasquez, a Kosovo veteran.

Two New Life Members!

Both of these life members will bring tons of skills and talents to the ever growing VFW Post 9949 resource pool. Pete said his brother always wanted him to join the VFW and become a life member. The Post is so happy this finally happened at the end of 2022. The Commander closed the meeting by thanking everyone for their wholehearted commitments to supporting Veterans in 2022. He looks forward to the continued growth of the Post in 2023. As well, we look forward to facing the many challenges and changes that always occur through-out the year.

15 Dec. 2022- With the precision of the USAF Thunderbirds and the power of a M1 Abrams tank, the VFW Post 9949 rolled into four local care facilities to share some camaraderie and Christmas cheer with Veterans and Veteran’s spouses & widows. It was nothing but smiles and smooth sailing as 66 Veterans and 26 spouses & widows received warm greetings and gifts (like fruit baskets and handcrafted Christmas ornaments) for the holidays. A hearty team of VFW Post 9949 members, VFW Auxiliary, volunteers and even a canine team synchronized their support and were able to spread joy to all our Veterans. Flags from every military service hang from the rafters, including America’s newest branch of Service – the US Space Force. VFW Post 9949 is extremely honored and proud that proprietor Mimi Gentallini for years has placed a VFW Buddy Poppy donation jar up front near the checkout for all to see and use. The jar, known as the “Bill Camper Buddy Poppy donation jar” (named for one of VFW Post 9949 outstanding founding members), provides free Buddy Poppies all year long. This jar also allows Mimi’s patrons a convenient way to help support local needy Veterans, due to the fact that all proceeds benefit the Veterans of Foreign Wars veterans assistance programs. VFW Post 9949 salutes and thanks Mimi’s for supporting all Veterans and their organizations.

Post Delivers on Hay

Supporting Veterans takes all forms, methods and programs. An extremely effective program benefiting Veterans with PTSD and other ailments in the Peachtree City, GA area is “Horses & Warriors.” This program puts hurting Veterans on the backs of horses for terrific rides in a safe and controlled manner. The results are super-great. The Vets love it. However It takes a lot of behind the scenes effort to keep these horses fed and cared for and it is not cheap. VFW Post 9949 is super proud to support this program by providing funds in the purchase of hay needed to keep these animals fed. Ride On Veterans! The 2022-2023 Patriot’s Pen contest theme is “My Pledge to Our Veterans.” The contest is a VFW sponsored youth essay contest conducted nationwide that gives students an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on this year’s theme. While very few essays make it all the way to the national level, scholarship money is still awarded at the State, District and local Post levels. This year’s VFW Post 9949 Patriot’s Pen team was led by Joe Bowler. Other team members included: Bill Werling, Arnie & Liz Geiger, Bo Hill and Post Commander Ben Bauman. It’s Not Just a Tag Line

No one does more for Veterans” is a registered tag line of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. At Post 9949 in Peachtree City, GA these aren’t just words but are actions benefiting Veterans nearly everyday. Ranging from providing direct assistance to a needed Veteran and family via our Post Service Officer, to providing rides to medical appointments, to our monthly VFW Veterans Visits (V3) program at multiple local nursing homes, to providing medical supplies -like wheelchairs and walkers- to conducting buddy checks on at home Veterans…this Post does it all. The VFW 9949 Post also includes supporting the needs of spouses and widows. The VFW Auxiliary incorporate support with their monthly visits to Veteran spouses and widows at local nursing home facilities. Therefore, one can see that for VFW Post 9949, it’s not just a tag line. It’s what we do.
